Federer had the range of shot to really expose Roddick's one dimensional game. The kinds of player that could really upset Federer were the ones who could blunt his game and make him grind. That meant being a great retriever and being able to get the ball up high with heavy topspin, pushing Federer back and making him generate his own pace. Roddick just couldn't really do that. The difference between the foot work between the two shows their inner mindset. One relaxed and another restless, anxious! Also the constant adjusting the t-shirt! Imagine Rafa without his ocd would have long surpassed 20 slams. Emotional make up is so important to success. Andy is great himself but could not win many slams.
Rafa's "OCD" is what makes him. so great. Without it he probably wouldn't have won 20 Slams. It's just what works best for him as a player. Just as Federer being relaxed is what works best for him.
@@masters.1000 It makes sense matchup wise. Young Djokovic notoriously struggled against big servers, and young Nadal struggled a bit with his return when switching surfaces, so he tended to have weird results at Masters but did well at the majors since his return is tuned up by then (still had a 7-3 record against Roddick, with one of the losses being when he was 17 years old). Federer is also incredibly good against big servers because of his baseline chip return.
Its really interesting watching these matches, and then watching some of the more recent ones. Roger was here not hitting anywhere near as hard, and many slice backhands were dropping short, allowing Andy to attack. Just shows how even the big players are developing and improving.
@@saurabhtripathi917 I will say that going to the 97 pro staff has changed his game a lot. He now hits with a lot more topspin on his forehand. @@twinwankel it's not about tha racket bro, I m just saying that he used to hit the hardest during 2004-2007 because he was in his early twenties, like Djokovic also hit the hardest during 2008-2012.
@@saurabhtripathi917 I think he could have continued to hit exactly like that well into 2009/2010 seasons... But in the beginning in 2008, that damned mononucleosis took a tool on his power and stamina for at least the first half of the year, taking away a good portion of his confidence. At Australian Open and RG he was simply another player. At Wimbledon he was starting to regain strength, but he was still prone to highs and lows, and thus it was not enough against a very good Nadal. Then, in the last part of that year and for a good portion of 2009 season, we saw again solid glimpses of the "old" true Federer. I think that, without that mononucleosis "accident" and the loss in confidence connected to it, in the 2008/2010 timespan he would've probably collected 2/3 more slams.
Well...come on...Andy admitted a few years ago that he had a tell in his serve that Roger and some of the other players - like Hewitt - long knew about. Right before Miami someone finally clued Roddick in on what it was and said most of the guys on tour knew it. He changed up his serve routine in this Miami match against Roger. He said after the match the Roger came up to him and said, "Oh...you finally figured it out, huh?" He said they had a good laugh about it. Roddick acknowledged that wasn't the reason Roger beat him like a drum - it was just Roger's overall game that gave him fits. So yeah, Andy won the final battle but he'd already lost the war half a decade earlier.
There are two times I felt bad for Roddick in his losing record with Fed. Obviously the big one was the 2009 Wimbledon final where he just poured out his complete soul on the court only to lose. I'm a big Fed fan but I felt bad for Roddick. He really showed his best on that day. But the other timer for me was the 2007 US Open quarterfinals where Federer RETURNED Roddick's 140 mph serve. Fed was dominating the match as usual and Roddick was playing his heart out. But that return, which was pure magic by the Magician/GOAT, was PURE DOMINATION. Returning Roddick's best weapon at 140 mph to win the point was just adding a TON OF SALT ON AN ALREADY GAPING WOUND. It was one of Fed's many memorable great moments and one of Roddick's worse. Roddick was a really good to great player. Never a true fan but I respected his play a lot. He just unluckily played in the era of Fed, Rafa and NOVAX like so many players of this generation.
At a point, I was really pissed with Federer consistently approaching the net on Roddick's forehand. But I believe, after all those defeats (especially the thrashing at AO and the Wimbledon '09 final), Roddick deserved the last laugh.
Federer didn't ruin Roddick's career. He just prevented him from winning more Major Titles. Roddick had a very good career and is enshrined in then International Tennis Hall of Fame! Just about every Tennis player wishes they had a career like Roddick!
So forgive the impreciseness here but I saw Andy on The Tennis Channel recount a story about this particular match. I guess through the entire course of their rivalry, Roger had an unspoken tactical advantage that ended up being an absolute killer on Roger's service games. Apparently, during Roger's ball toss he had the ability to see Andy move around the service box out of the corner of his eye and would adjust his serve based on Andy's new court positioning. As you can guess, this made breaking Roger's serve damn near impossible even when there were second serve "opportunities" to try to take offense immediately in the point. Any advantage Andy might have been able to take was almost always taken away from him.At some point either in 2011 or 2012, Andy caught wind of this tactic through locker room chatter (Idk if I'm remembering this part correctly) by either other players or perhaps people close to Roger. With this new knowledge in hand, Andy did not allow this massive "stacking of the deck" to take place so to speak in this match. He didn't preemptively show his hand mid-ball toss for Roger to be able to get out of trouble on his serve games... Andy stayed with him in the 1st set and in the tiebreaker, and obviously went scorched Earth in the 3rd set... It makes you wonder that if Andy had the even handedness tactically in this regard if their matches would have ended up differently on a number of occasions.. Roger even noted Andy's newfound awareness upon the end of this match lol.
This might be the very best single match Roddick has ever played. Honestly, he beat a prime Federer here. And not only that, but Federer was playing REALLY well. Andy just had to literally hit every ball perfect and still barely won. Amazing match
Nobody destroyed Roddick´s career. His career was impeccable. One of the greatest tennis players in history and former # 1 in the world. The fact that Roger is one of a kind does not mean he destroyed anyone´s career (this is not boxing...). The title of this post should be changed. If the idea was to pay a tribute to Andy, it probably started with the wrong foot (I don´t think Andy would like the title of this post...).
Tennis is brutal game for some. Being great but still not able to get a single slam, especially in the era big three. It must be very hard losing so many times without a slam victory at least once in your professional life.
In order to beat Federer, a person has to play loose, aggressive, take chances, crush balls and swing for the fences. Roddick and James Blake finally broke through on Federer when they did that.
"swing for the fences". Reminds of US Open 2009 final. Del Potro blew Fed away with his monstrous forehands. Djokovic and Nadal have beaten Federer a lot but mostly by playing defensive tennis (nadal has some exceptions like FO 2008). Very few players have beaten Fed by playing attacking tennis because it is almost impossible to beat him playing attacking but when you get it right, its amazing to watch.
So apparently Roddick had a very exploitable tell (I think on returning second serves) that Federer picked up on and abused for 12 years until a mutual friend mentioned it to Roddick. After that Roddick won their last encounter hahaha. Agassi had also picked up on a Becker tell after getting destroyed by him in their first few matchups - as Agassi himself said it "I had to hide the fact that I could break Becker's serve at will". I imagine Roddick vs Fed would've been closer if not for that fatal tell that only Fed picked up on
Roddick has a winning h2h against Djokovic now there’s a weird factoid. Roddick was very good in his early days but he tweaked his shots and lost something.. maybe blame his new coach he had
One wishes Roddick had continued for a few years more. He was a tremendous player, right up among the best. Federer was, of course, Federer, almost unplayable at this time
I wonder if Roddick played tennis simply to have a chance to slap-bomb that first serve. He was the sh!t back in 2001-2005 with that bomb serve. Everything else however was average at best, movement was even less developed. Compared to Federer of course.
It was nice for Andy to have this final win to hold on to, and a real shame his shoulder ended his career so soon. I will always love A-Rod, mainly for his humour tbh. But I really cannot stand it when players presume their gods had something to do with their wins. The Delpos, Rublevs even Andy Murray if that is what his finger pointing is all about - and the rest, really irritate me. Andy acting like some Supreme Being was at all invested in his hitting a ball over a net is just laughable.
I don't like the title of this video..in fact I think it's really stupid..because Roddick had a great career overall, so he lost to Fed many times like so many other good players have..
Silly to say Federer destroyed Roddick's career- he reached world number 1, won Grand Slams and made millions. Hardly a destroyed career. Federer was just better. Webbski destroys Raz Ols's post
Only top player i can think that has the h2h over novak. 5-4 2009 was great year for him, beating novak 3 times. Unfornately at wimbledon fed was still in prime even not playing absolute best he scambled the win. And some try to say federer played in a weak era.
Never heard what Fed said after 2009 Wimbeldon. Sums him up, perfectly. Tries to act like a 'class act', but is really an arrogant jerk. Never gives anyone credit. After every match it was, I had it on my racquet or I missed my chances. So different than Rafa or Novak when they lose.
Roddick has a likeable character. I find Federer gets a bit bitter when beaten. Eg. When Millman beat him, Federer didn't give him any credit but blamed the climate instead
The title is stupid misleading and clickbait. Roddick barely won a stupid match, nothing worth mentioning in tennis history books. You could probably say that about Rafa after winning the 21 grand slam title. But Roddick? Give me break. Roddick was a nullity in the big tennis.

Sir Roger federer golden legend in universal love you ❤❤❤
That's because Roddick was a fighter and a tremendous tennis player.
Tennis is brutal game for some. Being great but still not able to get a single slam, especially in the era big three. It must be very hard losing so many times without a slam victory at least once in your professional life.
Just passing through on my journey to watch every Federer match.
Plus I like Roddick too he could of won at least 3 other slams if it wasn't for Roger
That's been a good match !
@@codegeek-il5fm actually, Nadal mostly beat Federer by attacking Federer's backhand.
Hewitt and Haas had both the last laugh as well vs Fed
It was unfortunate for Andy that he had to play Federer during Fed’s true prime. It was unfortunate for a lot of players, but especially Andy.
Did Roddick play better or worse here than he did in the 2009 Wimbledon final? What do you guys think?
What year was that?
the good old days
Andy I love yr tennis !
I imagine Roddick vs Fed would've been closer if not for that fatal tell that only Fed picked up on
at least a last satisfaction for Roddick god I feel for him
its kinda insane how roddick would have had at least 3 more slams and at most 4 more if not for fed
Andy Roddick four time Wimbledon champion? 2003-2005, 2009
Roddick has a winning h2h against Djokovic now there’s a weird factoid. Roddick was very good in his early days but he tweaked his shots and lost something.. maybe blame his new coach he had
Glad to see Roderick win the last one. Fed did really whiff Roddick’s potential career…
One wishes Roddick had continued for a few years more. He was a tremendous player, right up among the best. Federer was, of course, Federer, almost unplayable at this time
Roddick's career may have been stunted by Federer, but Roddick got Brooklyn Decker. So it's fine 😁
Roddick should have played more. He had eventually gotten a nerve to beat federer.
I find Roddick vs Federer more fun than Nadal vs Federer.
16:27 Gus does not look pleased
Last laugh? Nah, I'm sure Roddick would've traded all of his non-GS-final wins against Federer for just one championship decider against him.
Federer won 2009 Wimbledon on forehand misshit and lost 2019 one with his own forehand misshit
Symbolic)
Took Roddick 15 yrs of Federer punishing passes to stop with horribly timed approach shots.Sticking to the baseline won this match.
Can Djokovic ever win a match against Feder without his double hand game.
I wonder if Roddick played tennis simply to have a chance to slap-bomb that first serve. He was the sh!t back in 2001-2005 with that bomb serve. Everything else however was average at best, movement was even less developed. Compared to Federer of course.
Federer did what he did for all old Friends close to retirement. Hewitt, haas, roddidk, gave a chance when they had no chance to high level.
Finally~~~~~~~!!:)

2009 was great year for him, beating novak 3 times. Unfornately at wimbledon fed was still in prime even not playing absolute best he scambled the win. And some try to say federer played in a weak era.
All that just to be beaten by Juan Monaco 7-5, 6-0 in the next match
Is the title a joke or am I blocking this channel?
Sorry Roddick my analysis of your game is that you played perfect tennis, but Roger played god mode against you.
he still beat him
Never heard what Fed said after 2009 Wimbeldon.
Their H2H is 21-3. Roger definitely had the last laugh.
federer roddick h2h
21-3
@@molybdaenmornell123hopp5 incredible, thx!
The title is stupid misleading and clickbait. Roddick barely won a stupid match, nothing worth mentioning in tennis history books. You could probably say that about Rafa after winning the 21 grand slam title. But Roddick? Give me break. Roddick was a nullity in the big tennis.
Dry your eyes, kid
