A Mexican ghost story of a woman who, from sadness or madness, does the unthinkable and drowns her two children & then herself. The tale differs from place to place, and from time to time, but one detail is consistent. The Weeping Woman is still out there, wailing and mourning her two boys... and looking for others to join them. If you see a woman in white down by the river, you have to watch out. It could be La Llorona.

While I totally agree this not as... horrifying as having the daughter of a king, that was nothing but kind to your people, murdered, skinned and parading a young boy "dressed" with her skin in from of him (hi there Aztecs!), my guess is that:
      a) They got some complains about the other myths
      b) Maria's situation and crime are away more realistic and common
      c) This are very difficult times for many people around the world, and mental health issues skyrocketed in the last few months

When I was little, I was told that La Llorona would appear at night in certain places... the problem is that "those places" were everywhere my relatives lived, and they live through all over Mexico, so even as I was little I was... skeptical that this "ghost" would appear all over Mexico and coincidentally where my relatives lived... I was still scared of the dark, so it was just the same, TBH.

I've never been aware nor interested in this lore, nor in lores of other countries aside from Greek/Norse/Egypt until he told me and I basically became so immersed in learning about the lores and myths of many more different countries. • @candybaby3136

I heard the story slightly differently; what I was told was that Maria’s sons reminded her of her husband’s betrayal, and she dragged them through the village as they were screaming, and then she went to the river to drown them. That and never went back to husband or confessed because he was already gone. And she drowned herself soon after drowning her sons.

I'll let you know they are both real as everything that hollywood produces is real.
Nah but on the real tho if they did the Arthurian tales they'd it'd be awesome if they could do the background before leading into the Arthurian myth itself with Camelot and the whole story. I can definitely see them doing that. Idk if they'd do the Robin Hood story as its widely accepted now that its just a story or early play whereas the Arthurian myth is kinda believed and not believed

When I was a kid it was told to me that la Llorona killed her children to run away with a soldier from the revolution... only for the soldier to run off after she had done it. When she died of grief/killed herself after being abandoned, she wasn't able to enter heaven until she found the souls of her children... who were already in heaven, cursing her to wander the earth looking for them forever.
As I got older and met others from different regions her reasoning for murdering her children changed, but it was always in an attempt to escape a duty, or an unwanted life... and the consequence was always the same: eternal damnation to wander the earth looking for the way to rectify and unfixable mistake.

There is actually theories of the story being much older than Spanish colonisation. Within the ancient Mayan text of Popol vuh, it mentions a beautiful woman given as an offering to deceive the god Auilix. The story unfolds as expected and in the great tragedy she changes from "Lady lust" into "Lady weeping". Also, one of the 8 omen's that the aztec's wrote about before the conquest of Cortes involved a woman wailing in the darkness "My children, we must leave" and "My children, where will you go?"
