My mother was a WAVE during WWII. She sang this around the house doing housework. I wish they would sing the old word, because those women did man-sized chores for the men away fighting.

I love this version with the words. I was hoping I could find a version released by the navy with words. But they are all instrumental. I was going to ise the audio to open my presentation for women's history month for my command.

I served in the early 60's and have never heard this until now. We sang many songs in boot camp, but not this one.

I edit that reply. I can sing most of the words and that's because I forgot we did sing it. But as mentioned above, we sang a different version.

My Mom was a LT. in WWII. She taught us to sing this and Anchors Aweigh together. I mentioned it to the Navy 'Band and.....I'll be darned....they got together and DID IT!

In boot camp in 1962 , bainbridge, Maryland. Brings back great memories! And, yes, the words were different! Should be sung with anchors aweigh so it sounds better.

His man size chore was done by a navy WAVE. (1961 Bainbridge wave)

From 1968-1970, I was in the 327th Army Band stationed at Edgewood Arsenal. We played the graduations at Bainbridge. Our music for the sound off was "WAVES of the Navy", sung by the band and then played on the countermarch back to our position in the formation. They loved it! Pass in review music, of course, was "Anchors Aweigh".

I agree with K M-Hall, while I enjoyed hearing the song after so many years it would be nice to hear it as we all sang it in Boot.

1973 First Boot Camp in Orlando Florida. The lyrics we sang back then (song titled "Women of the Navy") are out of date, some politically incorrect. Women (except Navy nurses) weren't allowed on ships and did not serve in combat roles. I am not sure you would find women in the Navy band, either. The old lyrics strongly emphasized the women in support roles, waiting until the men came home. And the phrase "who will find ashore his man-sized chore" implies some superiority of men's work over women's. That aside, it is almost criminal that the band missed the opportunity to sing "Anchors Aweigh" in tandem with "Waves.."

My mother was in the Singing Platoon in the WAVES and she and I used to sing a duet of Anchors Aweigh and the WAVE song as part of storytelling program I did about my parents wartimes experiences. You can see the video here: th-cam.com/video/JJ8-ntmMiNQ/w-d-xo.html

They don't sing it any more because the term "WAVES" and what it stood for has been deactivated. Went to Boot Camp in 1957 and we also sang half this song and the other half Anchors Aweigh. Sounded so good.

That’s exactly the version I’m looking for. Frances Lynd from Bryn Mawr’s class of 1943 said it made the hair stand up on the back of his neck.

If they are going to sing it to honor us, they should at least get the words right. LT Betty St. Clair, USNR, wrote "MAN-SIZED CHORE" in 1944. And in 1969, at Bainbridge, we sang it proudly and correctly and with the Anchors Aweigh counterpoint. I think it is sad that today's female sailors will never know what that was like.

I replied above about being in the 327th Army Band that played your graduations. I was there during the years 1968-70. If I remember, between the band and the graduates, we alternated performing numbers before the ceremony began. I think that's when you sang the two songs in counterpoint.

@@js742 Thanks for that info. The music was so much a part of the ceremony. Were you out of Aberdeen or Edgewood? I lived in Joppatowne--joined the Navy to see the world and spent my first 20 weeks 20 miles from home!

@@patriciasuyak921 The 327th was stationed at Edgewood. We were in Joppatowne quite a lot, playing in parades. Many members of the band were from Pennsylvania - Lancaster, Lebanon, Reading, York...some from farther west in the state. And there were some from places close by in Maryland. One guy lived at home with his family, along Rte 1 between the Conowingo Dam and Bel Air. In all the time I was in that unit, only two people got orders for Nam. Did the Navy send you there?

@@js742 No, not VietNam. During most of my 20 years, I was lucky enough to have special assignments: Recruiting Command in Detroit, NCIS and Admiral's staff in Guantanamo Bay, and temporary duty on all east coast aircraft carriers and sub tenders. And I would do it all again!
