i don't know much about glen hansard. i knew i loved that song falling slowly (of course haha), but i am a huge fan of jeff. the fact that jeff was pals with him and played with this guy means he's got to be on the same parr. i'm going to listen to his music because of this.
My dad has played Glen Hansard for as long as I can remember, but I didn't fall in love with his music until a few weeks ago. As for Buckley, I pushed him aside until I heard Lover You Should've Come Over for the first time. Six months later I've got Grace on Vinyl and is now my 2nd favorite album of all time. It's strange as lately music has left me feeling bitter. All but the two artists. Now knowing that the two not only knew each other, but were true friends absolutely blows my mind. As James Allen said, "You gravitate towards that which you love most". It was the attitude they both had towards music, that I've longed for, for years.
It is unbelievable that we can love music and think we have heard the best. only to be awaken to angels that shared their beauty , and I had never once heard this Angels voice. just a fluke I came upon on a rainy afternoon, and to find this gifted amazing Soul to have been taken so quickly from you and I. the angels called him home, I see his face up in the sky and echoes of his music will never die....for Angels are Forever.
Quarantine and Matt Bellamy got me into Jeff's music recently and i cant get enough of him so i read every article about him whenever i can and it's all about him and Sin-é but it never says how he got there and how he met Hal Wilner exactly. At least what i've read. Amazing how those two defining things happened to him in one single night...it makes even more obvious New York was the place where he belonged. Too bad Glen missed on the chance to talk to him back that last time.
I'm soo speechless! All this is just amazing, kind of when one of your favorite musicians talks about your another super-favorite musician! And the story is so moving, let alone the tribute song at the end. Thanks for uploading!
two musicians who were not known when this happened in sin e all those years ago....but ""genius recognised genius" and played music together ,funny how it took ten years later for them to be recognised when they could see each others talent.,grateful all he same.
Love Glenn's music Jeff opened up for the band of a friend and I was able to hang out with Jeff a few times after hours at the coffee house where he opened up, what a amazing soul to this day, anytime I hear Jeff I still get goosebumps, when he sang it was like being swept up in all the thoughts and memories from which that song was written. I'm a huge fan of Tim Buckley as well, their range was mind-blowing. Thank you so much for sharing this with everyone, was really great.
I hadn't heard this before, and it is a real treat. Listening to it leaves a profound impression on me of being privy to a time in Jeff's life just before his he leaped on to the world stage. Very moving. Thank you, Glen Hansard and savagecabage, for sharing this with us.
Saw JB at waterloo records in 94' never heard of him but I knew the guy who owned waterloo and went to visit him. So, it was by chance, remarkable just remarkable like when I saw SRV 10 years before and had never heard of him.
@@D4n1t0o Jeff up close or SRV? I assume your asking about JB. Remarkable, he was everything that all of us in Austin and Dallas, San Marcos whatever were trying to be. JB's talent was like 1 in a million. When he sang Grace and Lover and Last Goodbye he sang for about an hour. I had never heard anything like him before, ya know, and didn't know what to think, except WOW. Like when I saw SRV or first heard Michael Jackson's Thriller or Jaco Pastorious it blows your mind. Such talent and charisma. You just never forget that kind of greatness, that moment in you life, ever!
So many stories about how Jeff came to be in New york his (mom) Mary tells one story, Producer of Sony tells another verson, and Glen tells his story. Guess it doesnt matter how Jeff came to be at Sine's he came and grew there as an artist and everything else is history. I love the way Glen tells the story about how he came to know Jeff, and love the song he wrote about Jeff, just lovely.
Yea this Glen Hansard song to Jeff is beautiful tribute to him. I also heard though that Rebecca Moore knew of the Tribute show to his father at St. Anne's and was made aware by Hal wilner that Jeff Buckley was his son and living in California and got his number and called him and invited him to sing there.
@@proinseasokiellig4388 I agree. The truth always matters hugely and is usually much more interesting than possible spin of some romantic, pretend destiny. In my reading along the way I read someone comment about the Jeff Buckley "mythology"??? I am a HUGE Jeff Buckley fan, but I do like the truth, and it never seemed quite right to me that people involved should be so confused on who called who and when. Soooo Proinseas O'Kiellig, cheers to you; we think alike = "It matters hugely . . . the truth." The Sin-e conflicting stories regarding when Jeff originally knew of, went into, and performed at Sin-e (I know he just guest sung one verse that night). Seems there is a photo of Glen Hansard singing with Jeff in Sin-e sooo, seems(??) to align with Glen's commentary. Not that there wasn't a break between Jeff beginning to play solo, regularly there. Also, Jeff WAS ambitious. The 20 minute verse 2 at Sin-e with Glen Hansard (Jeff taking quite literally that opportunity), and Jeff did the same to Gary Lucas(guitar player) when Jeff went into his own solo thing(stayed on stage) after Gary's and Jeff's joint performance was over = ambitious but uncool action as a professional, team player. Jeff also writes in his journal that he sometimes had used his good looks (well to that meaning) to open doors (good for him to have that self-awareness/honesty --- truth though is his looks would have opened doors without him trying to utilize them). Jeff also seemed to like shock effect --- answering the same interview question with a completely different answer/meaning on different interviews. "It keeps you from reaching for the gun too fast," yes, maybe, but it's also such an oh so dramatic thing to say. Saying provocative things. If true(???) kissing on the mouth a gay publicity specialist(Danny Fields) at an awards show (standing) where all could see (not to say Jeff didn't super like the guy and wanted it to be a joyful, fun thing) whatever; kissing standing(after I believe the story goes Jeff ran over to him) is not typical behavior at an awards show ----- seems possibly, purposely attention seeking, spotlight seeking. Being the only one dressed sooo casually at an awards show that you stick out too can be just comfortable or attention seeking. Soooo, I remain a HUGE Jeff fan for his amazing vocals, talents and hard work, but the truth seems that the ambition was way there. One can have big ambition but also have reservations/fears, nerves, want to start in smaller venues. Mary, his mom, says he was very ambitious. Good for her!!! To the truth(!!!) --- whatever it is ---- which is stranger, more interesting, more layered than any fiction :)
Some of the best songs come from strong and powerful emotions. ''neath the beaches' is a beautiful and moving tribute to Jeff Buckley - thanks for sharing that Glen and hope to see you come to Brighton, UK sometime
It makes sense that they would be good friends. Glen said his “holy trinity of artists” is Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Leonard Cohen. And Jeff always said his favorite artists were: Zeppelin, Dylan, Van, Cohen, Joni and Lou Reed.
Wow I've been into Jeff Buckley since I saw him play in 94' in Austin, Tx, but now more and more connections are happening that put together all the pieces of the puzzle of Jeff's life.
I believe I've heard this story before. But it was a good revisit and a beautiful redition of Beaches. Was worth the listen. Thanks for sharing it. Glen's accumulated some amazing experiences (and stories) hasn't he!
two musicians who were not known when this happened in sin e all those years ago....but ""genius recognised genius" and played music together ,funny how it took ten years later for them to be recognised when they could see each others talent.,grateful all he same.
Holy shit. Two of my favorite singers. I had no idea they were friends. Jeff was Glen's guitar tech. Hahaha. What a riot. I saw Swell Season in Germany 2008, and Hansard was unbelievably great. I wish I could have seen Buckley. Poor Glen. He lost Jeff and Mic Christopher. I don't know how he copes.
First off let me say how much I loved listening to this. Amazing. The sincerity and the emotion of it are all that really matter of course but I do have a question about a detail. I think the commitments film was released in August of 1991. The st Anne’s church tribute to Tim was in April of 1991. Fully can see that glen introduced Jeff to sine… just unsure about the Hal Wilmer part. But incredible moments to imagine none the less. I wish I had been there.
I've recently read 'Dream Brother' and kept looking out for mention of Glen. Unfortunately just briefly says he was involved with The Commitments production
It's also relatively well documented that the Greetings concert was set-up while Jeff was in L.A and he was called by Janine Nichols at St Ann's to offer him a shot at the gig...There's a new film about it even haha....
I heard the story was Wilner and one of Tim Buckley's old band mates wanted to put this show at St. Anne's church with local musician's singing TB's song. Didn't Rebecca Moore who was working for Wilner found out he had a son and that's she's the one that called Jeff in LA and asked him if he would do it?
Great, great stories but I can't understand how he could say the Tim Buckley tribute was created in front of he and Jeff when every other report states Jeff contacted the producers of the show from LA who hadn't even known that Jeff existed. (This coming directly from the producers themselves and Buckley's mother). Actually, all of his stories are different than everything I have read and watched. Im sure it doesnt matter, it is just confusing. Beautiful tribute song though.
sconsi9005 that's so interesting how everyone has their own version of history. True that it doesn't matter...beyond sad. He left behind a little piece of heaven. His music is immortal.
Yeah, Rebecca could settle a lot of bets. He was very close to her up to his death. Too bad it's so unlikely she'll ever tell her story. She lives and works in upstate NY now - about 10 minutes away from Bearsville Studio where Jeff recorded Grace.

Although Glen Hansard wrote a beautiful song to Jeff and sang it well, Jeff's talent far exceeded Glen's nevertheless Neath the beeches is very wonderful. Jeff Buckley was I believe a Prince type talent 1 in a million!
@VegaVelecka Surely Rebecca herself could dispel any rumours and surface the truth? I swear Buckley gigged at several clubs before discovering Sin-e and finding his fit. Personally I am endeared to the idea of an Irish man introducing an Irish-American to an Irish tavern -- with the luck of the Irish striking longevity for Sir Buckley. We fans should really press for a truth' on this matter as it is a vital component of Jeff's rise and fall.

yeah, wow, holy shit! All this time, I never knew that!
...like how a pre-Hawkwind/-Motörhead Lemmy was one of Jimi's guitar techs when he toured England/Europe?
I had no idea they knew each other. Glen has had a wildly understated and amazing life
