28 years as a local trucker in Hawaii and I`d say you are 100% correct! and I know it sounds depressing to many, but I guess that is my gift, because I show up early every day and stay late and love every minute of it.
+Max Youngblood My goodness, who wouldn't want to drive a truck in Hawaii? No snow, no ice, babes everywhere, perfect weather. No overnight stays in some flea bag truck stop in Jersey or some dump in Detroit. A veritable dream job. Where do the rest of us sign up?
i myself have been in the seat 38 going on 39 years. 4-5 million accident/moving violation free. you sir are the very best source for real no nonsense information for the new generation of drivers entering the workforce, all your videos, well done!!
Wise advice Dave these young people starting out need to listen to the people that have lived the life. I might add if they have young children that needs to be given a lot of consideration in their decision 6 month's turns to 20 yrs really fast
Good advice. Friend of mine who drove a truck said it's a good job for a single fellow who doesn't have a lot of attachments back home and doesn't mind being out for 2 weeks or more.
Hey Dave. Good videos you got here on the tube. I`m going to Trucking school after this summer. I`m not done before 2.5 years have passed, (so many strict rules here in the EU). My father was a trucker, so it`s in my blood. I`m an introvert and love driving. I`m not searching for fame or riches, just wanna be paid for doing something I love. To bad we only have the Persian cat trucks over here, and not the beauties you guys have.
Well the big trucks we have over here are slowly going the way of the dodo bird. The trailers keep getting bigger and the trucks keep getting smaller. The big ones are nice to drive though. Be safe on the road and enjoy, Rubmaster! Dave
Thanks for the advice. I haven't been driving as long as you sir. But my family has suffered from me being away from home. Found a local job with Saia. We'll see how it goes. Thanks,
Do you have any videos on dealing with the stress side of the job? As a new driver I can sometimes find myself getting stressed out. But I'm trying my best to handle it.
Ash Chapman I'm s new driver and I have a 3 yr old daughter that I don't want to miss on . I'm loving the new job as a trucker I try to seek advice from experienced hands like my father and brother to get through the tough situations but what I told myself from the beginning is "this is only temporary " nothing lasts forever. I came into the trucking world with a plan in mind . Pay off debt then heAd back to school to get a job where I'm home every night . Have a plan man have a plan
Ash Chapman I am not pushing anything here, just voicing what worked for me. I focus on the Cross during stressful times. There have been times I just gave the wheel over to Yeshua. The worst thing you can do out there is let the stress have you. It makes everything harder.
+Fantastic World Lovely Video! Sorry for butting in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you heard about - Proutklarton Find Yourself Plan (search on google)? It is an awesome one of a kind guide for becoming a successful freight worker minus the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my work colleague after many years got excellent success with it.
Informative as always :) Watching your another great video I''m glad you are giving up frutile struggle for a different way of calculating wages in USA. It is a pitty to waste energy on something you can not change (although it should) By the way, when you US/CAN truckers retire? At 65 ? 75 ? 95 ? :) Isn't 40 years enough.
i want to be a trucker, its really the only thing ive ever wanted to do will it be worth it? i make 500 a week currently and have been in a 11 year relationship.. neither me or my other half has gone to college and my idea was to get my cdl start trucking and be able to afford a home and schooling for my lady.. i hear you and others say low pay.. what is considered low? cause 500 a week is low imo.
+Brian Wafflee The pay doesn't have to be low if you work for the right carrier. Just be sure they pay you for all your time, not just by the mile. If you still make 500 dollars a week, are away in the truck for at least 70 hrs of that week and are spending money to eat on the road, that's too low. Dave
drove truck for 15 years if you want a divorce drive a truck if you want to make 5 dollars an hour drive a truck good advice dont drive a truck and be happy
hence , any sort of job you can advice to me SIR ,that you think is the best for carrier, ANY OTHER DRIVING JOB THAT PAYS HONOURLY .( dont want to hear about banking, doctor, cooking)
I agree with all of your points except for the fact that you won't get rich driving trucks. That's hogwash. If you have a parasite at home eating up your paycheck then you are right in that you probably won't get rich. I make between 55 and 65 a year. Most of that is disposable income. I'm single with almost no bills. I live in the truck and am happy to stay on the road. I'm going to retire and be camping in my travel trailer the rest of my life at 45 or 50. The key is not to get married or have kids. They are parasites who just feed off you. That's why you aren't rich. If you're a single man and you want to make a great living, trucking is an awesome way to do it. Travel all over the US, get to see a bunch of stuff, get paid to do it, and have low to no expenses.
Thanks For the video but I have a question as you said You CANT GET RICH IN TRUCKING but how about saving taxes at end of the year as compare to 9-5 pm job which eats your money through taxes. How much taxes you can save in trucking (everyone one say you can claim a good chunk of taxes by showing your expenses )
You can, especially if you are an owner operator, but you still need to be profitable as well. Saving money on taxes is pointless if you're going broke. Make sure the money is there in the rate. dave
save taxes? Yeah, some , like what you use on your job. But, what about the time YOU are not paid? I’ve been driving trucks for 18 yrs. the government has so many loop holes that companies can get away with, like not paying overtime.... it’s all straight time. 70 hrs, 80 hrs or 41 hrs, all straight time. So, u say save on taxes? Well, loose on so much other stuff that I need all the $ I can get.
Being married, to someone, which is hardly '' home '' is NOT THE LIFE FOR ANY WOMAN. UNLESS, she runs ' double ' up; WITH THE HUSBAND. i worked for a man, one time in the late 70's. He was married, a real gentleman. Taught me alotta things, about hauling hot liquid asphalt, and cattle/pigs/etc. His wife, was sick most of the time; due to loneliness, i would guesstimate.. ....anyway.....if you REALLY REALLY WANT TO OPERATE/OWN A TRUCK, STAY SINGLE, OR RUN DOUBLE WITH THE WIFE ! (BEST WAY)........

+Max Youngblood Love the driving part of the job the absolute best!

+chickey333 Life in Hawaii is tough, it takes most people a second or two to get used to it.

10-4 on the years going by too fast if you have kids! Dave
Good advice. Friend of mine who drove a truck said it's a good job for a single fellow who doesn't have a lot of attachments back home and doesn't mind being out for 2 weeks or more.
Everything that got me into trucking 35yrs ago is long gone.
I truly understand what you are talking about. Keep doing these videos as they enlightened to many to know that some does share the same views
Great vids BOSS! Yes, moving 80,000 pounds safely is tough! But...that stress is nothing compared to Police, fireman, brain surgery...
+Luke Grekat IDK, I wouldn't compare any two unless I experienced both.
Thanks very much for the videos and straight shooter approach.

I hear good things about Saia and they've been around a long time. I think you've made a good move there. Good luck and drive safe. Dave
Thank you sir..
Good advice ,been in many of those positions in my day also.

+Miguel Garcia Good to hear you got some benefit from it.
Im not a trucker but these are great life examples to go by.
Thank you!
Thank You Dave !
David is very informative, your the best.
Thank you sir! Dave
One more thing I learned keep a note pad a list of benders that are good a list that are bad and a list I refuse to ever go to again lol but true
Yup, good idea! No point in going to a dump twice! Dave

Informative as always :)

that's so true!
If you are young and married, DO NOT get into trucking unless you can find a good company where you are home every night.
this is so true, thnx for da video
great video.

smart trucking is right but you also have to pay your dues at first in the beginning too.Once at a certain point it gets better
Brian Wafflee Damn he didn't answer your question at all lol
