    The problem with a lot of this safety technology, is that it makes drivers lazy and reckless. I work in the auto industry and have customers tell me that they don't shoulder check anymore because the sensors will prevent a crash, but that's the exact reason why they did crash. I actually see no reduction in accidents from what i've seen. I personally hate driving new cars because of all the distractions and terrible visibility. That being said I prefer driving my 30 year old daily driver mainly because of the way better visibility, simple one glance look at the controls and it being made out of excellent materials and not disposable crap.

    • @RennieAsh
      @RennieAsh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can agree about visibility, some cars are terrible. Distractions are distractions if you let them distract you. Get one with steering wheel controls. Don't even need to look at the knobs or even fiddle with one hand off the wheel, unlike old radios.

      1984318i what you’re practically saying is that we are automatically bad drivers as soon as we step inside our cars the tech inside it doesn’t make us lazy it helps improve in areas where you can likely get hurt

    • @zackhewitt1147
      @zackhewitt1147 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Newer cars do tend to have worse visibility than older ones. although I do concede that this is a trade off for better roll over protection(I also believe bigger or curved mirrors would be a better solution than electronics to fix this). As for tech I believe the new "infotainment" systems do a lot to promote distracted driving. These new systems make drivers feel like they can take calls, receive and reply to text messages, scroll through menus for music, and fiddle with the electronic display while they drive. Beyond that newer cars are starting to put comfort features like A/C and heating on these displays, making the previously tactile distraction into a visual and tactile distraction as you now have to both look an take one hand off the wheel to change these settings. Newer cars however will almost always be safer in the event of an accident, but the question is does this make up for grooming drivers to be less safe.

    • @southernstalliongaming7544
      @southernstalliongaming7544 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zack Hewitt this distracted driving bullshit is worse with your older jalopies because the newer cars have it to where if you get a call on your phone and it’s Bluetooth all you have to do is press a button on your steering wheel to take the call and what do you guys that pick up the phone to take a call have to say for yourselves because you don’t have that tech

So what? It's still a beautiful car and I'd drive it with confidence and a smile on my face. All cars, like any materialistic item, can be dangerous. Just be safe with it. That's not hard to do.

      Yes i don't believe I will get a new car. There is far too much tec in new cars. Most are borring or ugly and the metal is very thin. It also costs alot more to fix the tec. I do as much work as I can on my car.

    • @heyaisdabomb
      @heyaisdabomb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I understand your frustration with new tech being harder to fix and simply, more to go wrong in the first place. But some features, like abs and more airbags, along with better absorption of impacts through better design (because of better simulation and design software), why risk your life? To save a few bucks? Won't help when your dead... Yes, things like lane departure technology shouldn't be needed, but look at tesla for example. If it detects a car coming into your lane, it'll avoid the car. Maybe you would have seen it and avoided it, but odds are, your paying attention more to whats in front of you way more then what the guy to the side of you is doing. I pride myself on keeping a 3d map of what's going on around me while driving, and I've never hit another car. But didn't stop someone from changing lanes right into me. I was trying to watch for potholes (SF Streets are the worst) and he was in my blind spot. No time to watch him switch lanes into me. This is where technology will save lives. It's not about replacing the driver to me (though that is the end goal) as much as it is about avoiding other drivers mistakes that could cost you.

    • @generolmatt4
      @generolmatt4 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Rocket Boards yes my car has a 5 star crash test rating and airbags so I'm good. And that tec does not always work and Tesla has lots of tec problems. The model x is very unreloable and 300mi range is pretty poor. I get farther in my v8.

    • @taz874
      @taz874 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      not every new car is safer than an old one but generally speaking a modern car will be safer than an older one ofcourse there are some exceptions and it also depends on the size of the vehicles in a crash.

    • @user-qu7jc8ht5q
      @user-qu7jc8ht5q 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      taz874 I've seen other videos that explain newer cars relying more on frame structure for a crash than the car around it. If they implemented that modern day technology on the frames with metal cars other than the plastic and other lightweight metal such as aluminum I think they could combine both to make a really truly safe car. I had a friend wreck a 1977 Ford into a semi head on and he walked away. The only main problem with that crash was the steering column was forced into him. Still minor injuries but I believe solid steel would fare better in a crash.

I'll just strip out the drive train a 76 Dodge Royal Monaco Brougham, convert it to electric and fill the floorboards and trunk floor with batteries and have the safest vehicle on the road with a better range than a Tesla at 1/6th the cost with plenty of leg and passenger room.

      Terrence Banton Not necessarily true. Its not about avoiding accidents, its about the car properly and successfully protecting you if you are in one. The older the car, the more likely you are to die due to older technology or lack thereof. You can be a world class driver, but if someone hits you and you roll over in your 1964 Caddy, you're probably gonna die from lack of airbags, inadequate seat belts, etc. But if someone hits you in your 2017 Caddy, you're significantly more likely to live due to Side curtain and Front airbags, crumple zones, improved seatbelts, etc.

    To hell with this. What we need to fix is human impatience. People get more complacent with their own recklessness and hazardous lack of patience, always being in a hurry, when you make vehicles more airbag/seatbelt/crushzone laden. All of the safety is compensated for: You feel safer, you tend to take more needless risks. I don't have a modern car, and think myself better off for it. I'm willing to take my chances. The only technology that will make us safer is a self-driven car. I will take the robot cabbies should they ever take off, but I will never want nor need a modern vehicle.

      MM-HM. The only extra technology we need are automated cars, that's it. Impatience and recklessness coupled with multi ton vehicles is a recipe for disaster. The only electronic equipment I have when on residential or city streets is my mobile, and I usually refrain from its excessive use. Most people can't keep their hands away from their mobiles for more than one minute. In fact, I often go days without using it. As I post this, I'm using a laptop. I don't even have a radio except at home in my bedroom. I watch the road and try not to be out past dusk unless I have a good reason.

    I personally feel much safer in my old 1978 F150 than I would in anything modern with electronic throttle and/or electric steering. I've been in cars when the electronic throttle malfunctioned, and I was driving one when the electric steering stopped accepting input from the steering wheel. At least I know my old outdated truck will never malfunction that dangerously. But I digress. Driving an older vehicle without modern electronic "safety" features forces you to pay attention and drive more safely. No amount of "safety" features will ever be a substitute for safe driving practices, but unfortunately most people think otherwise.

    From what I've heard, 9/10 cars that existed before the 1980's were destined to be coffins in crashes anywhere near 25 mph or above. More cars, starting in the 1970's had lap belts, but they didn't help that much, especially since they were rarely being used. It really wasn't until the early 1980's when automotive crashworthiness became a real concern.

    I drive a car older than I am, it has fantastic visibility and excellent handling. I will admit, that it does not have airbags, and it may not handle a rollover very well, but it feels pretty solid. It has a manual transmission, so even if my brakes fail, i can still downshift. I actually downshift a lot, meaning i generally decelerate well in advance and pace myself such that i only need my brakes when coming to complete stops or in emergencies. I tried to park my friend's newer car and it had so many buttons and switches (and blind spots) i gave up and asked him to move his own car in my driveway. New cars are meant to handle accidents better because they are more likely to be involved in one.

      Aalihte I see the point you’re trying to make but where in the video does it say you’re more prone to car accidents in an older car? You sound ignorant. It says you are statistically at greater risk to die in a car accident in an older than newer car, not be in a car accident.
      Also you’re comparing a 28 year old car to new cars. I’m willing to bet you there are more less then 10 year old cars on the road than 28 year old cars. Obviously the newer cars will statistically have a higher amount of accidents because there is more of them. That is not what the video is about. How many “classics” do you see as daily drivers? They are not practical cars. You’re comparing ancient cars more than a quarter century old.
      Good for your grandma being in very little accidents. Not everyone drives a car older than you. I doubt her driving a classic has hardly anything to do with the statistics of this video.

      But, to answer your point: It may be possible that people get complacent in new vehicles. I know that, personally, I drive my 1980 Pickup slower and more cautiously than a new vehicle. But if I were go crash my pickup I would be worse off, so I compensate.

OH and for the love of god STOP going from the left lane to the exits and not even using a turning signal. i cant count how many times some asshole did that. go the the left lane and then go to the exit, not one sweeping motion in front of a truck.
    want to make people safer drivers. make them get behind the wheel of a tractor trailer and drive it around a closed test course to get a license to operate a car. make them learn how to check their air pressure with a gauge, check their lights, check their oil, check their own brakes and suspension. the biggest problem, too many idiots on the road with too little knowledge of safe automobile operation.

      Great points there. I'm a class B driver and I regularly drive a 28,000+ pound vehicle that takes at least 5-6 seconds to come to a complete stop at highway speeds. People in regular cars and trucks piss me off to no end because they cut you off at random and they do it at very close distances like I'm driving a regular car. To make it even worse, they don't even use turn signals to communicate that they're about to change lanes or make a turn. Because of stupid people like that, I have to go out of my way and take additional precaution and drive paranoid expecting everybody in standard vehicles to randomly cut me off without signaling at a distance of 5 feet or less. Then there's the idiots that ride so close to the back of the commercial vehicle that they're hiding in one of your worst blind spots. I think that all commercial vehicles should have a sticker on the back of it that says "If You Can't See My Mirror, I Can't See You." Maybe that will remind them of what they're actually doing.

My 90's odometer and coolant temperature gauge broke, though. Another issue is the transmission's Throttle Valve Cable Grommet (from stock) is garbage and it needs replaced with a brass one. Other Ford cars of that time need the same grommet replaced.

We got into an accident and if that russian lady didnt have a safty bumper on the front of her bullshit car, our car wouldn't of been damaged, and her car would of been totaled. Our car was still able to make it home. But it ended up needing a new gas tank, and several things to fix and sadly at the time we couldn't afford to fix anything except the back tale light. I loved that car. I loved everything about it. it had under 30k miles on it also. Eventually we had it towed away because my mom didn't feel like moving it so they took it away. The problem is that even a mild or minor crash will almost destroy your vehicle. Both have pros and cons. Also the newer car will break down a lot more frequent mechanical wise.

Yet we consider them safe to drive. Come the year 2030 you will buy your teenager who is just starting to drive a 2017 used car and you will have people telling you that car is old-it is not safe. TBH the "safety" of newer cars is partly a scam. Sure plastic filling might ease the inertia impact on your body, but if you're crashing into a heavier car or a wall, youll still die from the broken plastic shards and glass coming your way. BTW im 100% sure car manufacturers use special cars for their crash tests, when they're rich enough they can just bribe the safety regulators, its not impossible. In the end the safer cars are usually the heavier ones - SUV's, Jeeps - thats why ppl buy them nowadays.

    The things I’m really frustrated with new cars are the blind spots created by the side curtain airbags. When looking through a corner it’s like a tree that you need to look around. Before adding more pillows they need to figure out how to tighten the package. Another is ABS that’s too sensitive. When roads are rutted up from heavy traffic or resent road work coming up to a light some car’s tires will skip a bit on the ruts causing the ABS to go off when it shouldn't and they end up rear ending someone.

    I drive both. I have brand new cars as well as a vintage 1954 Nash Ambassador. From a safety point, I'd rather be in a new car if I were in a wreck. The Nash steering column has the "cardiac arrester" horn button that will for sure crush the sternum of any unfortunate driver.
    However, I still feel safe in the Nash. If for no other reason, I drive it differently. I know a modern car can stop in half the distance the Nash can, so I drive accordingly. I keep about 3-5 seconds distance from the car ahead.
    I also know how dangerous the brakes can be. The old drum brakes can easily fade. You only have about 20 seconds of braking in any 3 minute period. I know it and drive accordingly. I use lower gears to maintain speed, NOT the brakes! I see people all the time coming down from the mountain resorts nearby and they will ride their brake all the way down. If you tried that on a 60 year old car, you would be over the cliff inside of a minute.

    Ok, the last wreck I was in , I was driving a 1947 Chevy flat bed pickup. I hit a 1990s Monte Carlo broad side. The car folded up . The whole drivers side was demolished. In the past 20+ years I have driven only 1940s pickup trucks I have had several collisions with other things (not proud just like to drive Fast) and I've always been able to drive away. Keep in mind that my 40s vehicles are not all original, V8 engines, collapsing steering columns , independent front suspension, but basically stock bodies and frames. To be honest I would rather be in my 40s vehicles than the newer vehicles because I have seen how the new ones crumple up, I know they absorb more of the forces created in a crash and cushion the occupants but the Tanks I drive can cut the new vehicles in half, not to mention small trees, fences, utility poles, sign posts, Deer, Elk , (I live out in the country, Big Time Rural ) and other annoing things one encounters when breaking the speed limits. Speaking of Animals on the Road, I hit a deer at 65+ mph last fall, (I don't consider this a wreck) and with the Bumper setup I have he didn't do anything to the front of my pickup but he did spin around and put a small dent in the fender. I slowed down, turned and went back to check on him (I seen he was seriously injured in the rear view mirror) he was able to get away into the field. Then I called fish and game to take care of him drove home. If I had been in a newer vehicle? It would have totaled it. Even newer pickup trucks get wiped out by such things as this. I know, a guy here had a newer Dodge ram same thing happened to him and his truck was a mess. It cost him allo to just make it drivable again. Thanks for the video but I'm going to keep my old pickup trucks. Another thing I forgot to say, my 1946 Chevy pickup has four wheel disc breaks, I did away with the Anti Lock though that just Bugged the Hell out of me.
