I went to school to become an elementary school teacher as well. Needless to say, I dropped out of college in 2008, to take care of my grandmother who has since passed on. She passed away in 2021, I don't have a regular job, but I do work the election polls and I've worked the elections since 2016 and I continue to do that when ever I am needed. I have been trying my hand at graphic design since 2013. I also do video editing as well.
Loved hearing your journey of becoming a graphic designer! So inspiring. That’s amazing you started at an agency in Singapore! Is that where you were teaching as well? I am also currently a kindergarten, elementary school age teacher right now in Taipei, and I resonated with everything you said about not feeling like I’m utilizing my creativity to the fullest, wanting to do something different every day, and not feeling like it’s for me. I have started a Udemy course on graphic design but need to keep going to gain more skills. Did you find there was many opportunities for graphic design work, despite not knowing the language in Singapore? I have looked into jobs here in Taipei, and internships, but many require knowing the language, Mandarin. Wondering if Singapore is more flexible with that. Hey Sha. I don't want to be long-winded, but I found your channel and your videos have truly inspired me. I have a similar background in Early Childhoood Education (teacher for 10+ years... hated it but it's the family business). Although I did complete my bachelors in journalism and mass communications, I didn't realize until my senior year that I could have majored in graphic design... so I started teaching myself. YEEAAARRSS later, I started doing some freelance and took some classes for graphic design at a community college. 2020 happened, I lost all motivation and dropped out. Here I am now, getting ready to start up again. Hearing your background and how you have been able to build your business and skillset is amazing to hear. Often on here on youtube, we don't always hear from people who didn't go to school and are very much successful. Thank you!

Would love to see a video on how you budget in the current climate in the UK. E.g. what % you spend on rent, % on food, gym membership, investments in crypto etc.
Definitely! Been wanting to create a ‘budget with me’ type of video so will try and shoot one soon :)

When making a portfolio should you include just the style/type of work you mainly focus on or should you include a variety of leaflets, package design, website design etc

How did you get motivated when you got into the industry? I just started doing graphics and I have 0 motivation to do anything
Is there anything you are more excited about designing? I’ve had certain client work that I found so boring and it made me think I hated designing but it was just the type of work I was doing. Once you find the style of design you enjoy doing it makes things a lot more fun!
