- Compared two acoustic guitars that are both Grand Auditorium body shape, one has a cutaway.
Both have installed now the Fishman Preamp Presys Blend that includes a microphone and a piezo to blend together as needed.
One is made in Mexico, the other in Slovakia. One is Sitka + Sapele, the other Dolomite + Macassar Ebony.
One is 43 mm at the nut, the other 45 mm
For some reason the neck of the Dowina it's just more comfortable and easier to play. I suspect the bracing and overall build quality has something to do with this...

The reverb really makes it really difficult to distinguish the actual pure sound of these guitars.
The Dowina looks and sounds better than the Taylor. When you compare these makers there is a big difference in the scale of the two operations and the number of instruments produced. When you look at the all solid wood Dowinas I believe they compare very favourably to much more expensive models in the Taylor & Martin ranges. Dowina is still a small enough operation to have a lot of hands on involvement from the founder and owner. This is reflected in their excellent quality control. Wage levels in Slovakia are also a factor.
Correct, still many people will prefer the Taylor for the name and the image on a stage. Soundwise when you play alone in the room the Dowina is rich and full sounding. The problem I had with mine was the neck angle that I had to adjust in about 2 years from the built. The Taylor has one great advantage in this aspect as it's so easy to reset the NT Neck. I would encourage Dowina to find a similar solution for their necks as it's inevitable for the neck to bend in time.
Dowina best in all ways to me
On the basis of this I would choose the Dovina. I visited Richards Guitars and TBH it was an overwhelming experience - the Dovina was so light, clear, resonant, responsive - like nothing I had tried before. I wasn't really prepared properly to try it out - I left after several hours kicking myself for not having tried out certain bits of guitar playing - in the guitar shop it's amazing how things you play at home seem to evaporate. I liked the sound of my existing guitar but this was so different I felt like I would have to re-evaluate what I was looking for - it was that profound an experience - far beyond what I was expecting. So...I know I'll be going back, better prepared and more open minded about what I might want - it's almost certainly going to be Dovina - videos such as this only confirm what I'm thinking. Cheers!
Thanks for watching and the comment! Really appreciate your detailed experience... Indeed I understand you, sometimes the right Guitar gets you playing things you never played before... Dowina are just feeling so push compared to many other Higher End brands. You just need to find the right one for you.
I'm going to Richard's soon to order a Dowina OM........ see you there!
Thank you so much for sharing these feelings here. I am a very lucky man being able to work with Erika, Stan and the Dowina workshop. It’s become my life’s mission to try to make sure justice prevails and as many guitarists get to know what special things happen there! It’s just so sad so few people know about them or can get to experience one in person.
@@tbeau6663thank you! ❤. The OMG! 😂. Love that name. I could bore you with the story on it but if you see my very first ever thumbnail for a Dowina - it will make you smile !
Nice video mate! Neither would be a pad pick IMO. I would go with the guitar that flashes me the most. In this case the Dowina. I like the look better and the wider fingerboard. Nevertheless both guitars have a nice sound.
Thanks mate! I agree with you, I have both and will keep the Dowina. It feels so much feather like touching and easier weight overall, that also translates into a more resonant guitar. It also looks astonishing compared to the Taylor. To have a Taylor with these looks it would cost double the price of Dowina.
I would go for the Dowina. I started out playing classic guitar, with a very wide fretboard. But folk and blues is really what I live fore. Most mainstream guitars are made for playing 3 cowboy cords, but I need a clear sound on all strings for fingerpicking. 45 millimeter is ideal for me. I bought a Baton Rouge 46 mm, and that is ok too. Just ordered a Dowina, and I'm very exited to have it delivered next week.😊
Great to hear from you! Curious what model of Dowina did you order? Indeed most guitars used to have 43 mm nut but it started to change since Fingerstyle is so popular
@@77guitarts22 I ordered this: Dowina Danubius GACE - Fishman Presys+
@@hanserikkratholmrasmussen6623 Oh, great, it's the same like mine. I have the Ds version ( Dolomite Spruce) you'll love it
I really like these comparison video's that you do. They so off this guitar's capabilities. And also show up the competition.
Ive just ordered one of these today 😊
@bmac5085 Thanks! Appreciate it! So you've ordered a Dowina? What model?
My first Dowina was a Danubius. Sadly, they are not fully solid guitars but have laminated back and sides. But the build quality and overall "feeling" I got from it was unalike any other (low to mid tier) acoustic I ever owned, so my next purchase was a second Dowina, the Sauvignon. (Back when they cost about the same as a Danubius.) It's a fully solid instrument and the difference in sound and clarity is substantial. Where the laminated Danubius would drown my voice in a flood of boomy low-end, the Sauvignon is much softer in the lows and more mid-focused, sits really well around my voice and doesn't sound as obtrusive. Now I'm contemplating my third Dowina, and I'm not even looking at brands like Taylor, Martin or Gibson, because I'd just be paying the brand with those. How about the Dowina Silk Road as a (currently) 1.700€ substitute for the 4.999€ Gibson Dove...
Indeed even the laminated back and sides are such a value as the feeling and sound is just astonishing even compared to higher priced brands... I never had the pleasure yet to try an All-Solid Dowina, but I have many other All-Solid Furch, Taylor, Epiphone, Faith that indeed have something extra compared to the laminated B&S but it's just so subtle, not really significant difference to my Dowina Danubius. I would say that the more you play even a Solid Top only will still sound better and better and closer to an All-Solid wood guitar.
I have a Dowina Amber Road with the Dolomite top. It sounds great also. Richards Guitars reviews ebony bodies on his channel. The only problem I have with the 45mm nut is I can't hold down the F# with my thumb.
That must sound amazing... Is it Rosewood on the B&S? I see they have Maple as an option for that model. Well, indeed sometimes a wider neck has it's limitations. For me it feels at home with the 45 mm neck. Especially for Fingerstyle. The space is well done and it's not a chunky neck. Yes, I've looked at Richard's videos also. The Macassar ebony is such a beautiful wood with all the intricate lines design...
@@77guitarts22 Yes rosewood back and sides. On the bracing near the sound hole you can see where Stan Marinova put his initials (SPM) after he tuned the top.
Imo Dowina sounds little better
Indeed, it has a different Spruce type on the top, Dolomite Spruce / Italian Spruce ... That and all the construction gives it such a lovely tone...
hard to compare since the side/back materials and soundboards are totally different from each other. find another taylor with similar specs. The density of ebony vs mahogany are so far apart that its not a fair comparison. unless the retail price of both instruments are the same then you know that you get a better value with dowina.
In fact for the Dowina you would pay less than the similar Taylor 114ce, and you get a better pickup with Tunner built-in and Blend of piezo & microphone, better binding ( real wood), beautiful inlays, hand made by a small team, the feeling is of a boutique guitar compared to the Taylor. Plays even easier than the Taylor. The Back and Sides are laminated but they are not influencing the sound as much as the solid woods would...
@@77guitarts22 I understand your comparison if your main point is the price, value and comfort but i just don't think the tone can be compared because of the different species being used. not sure if the bodies are the same dimensions either so that maybe another variable
Model Dowina???
