Populations were lower back then. There is high pressure on councils to allow building housing especially *affordable housing*. Otherwise you have people complaining (rightfully) that rents are too high and there is no place to live. Its not so simple.
It's really important to get back to dredging rivers and streams. In the old days, farmers cleared silt, and used it for fertiliser, keeping the waterways clear. It's not going to solve all the problems, but if could be a good place to start.
@julieyates405 Yor are 100% correct. Dredging the rivers is the council responsibility dredging was commonly carried out in the post war years up to the late 1980's by removing the accumulated debis, dredging can restore the waterway to its original depth and condition.

If you live on a river bank, DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I bought my current house 20 years ago and one of the prerequisites was not to be on a flood plain. I live 300 feet up the side of a hill just below the summit and surprisingly over the past 20 years I have never been flooded, go figure. It's a miracle. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😆😆😆😆😆😆😆🤣🤣🤣🤣
My heart goes out to everybody who is affected by this flooding. Much of Norfolk and Somerset were under water previously, drains built in the last few hundred years have not been maintained and they recently (last 20 years or so) stopped dredging rivers to save costs. Farmers have built berms to stop some of the fields they own that used to flood from flooding - with the consequence that they forced more water down-stream faster, raising river levels substantially, increasing the risk of severe flooding. Some local councils built some berms inappropriately, named them 'flood defences' and pushed the water down-stream faster and took away valuable flood plains which used to slow the water and prevent the river level raising catastrophically. Bring back dredging, stop making berms alongside the rivers and do not build houses on flood plains. Did the Environment Agency take their eye off the ball?
This is what happens when people would rather have a couple of pence off of their taxes than have it invested in the countries infrastructure ... you get what you vote for.

Someone mentioned moving to higher ground until the waters recede. How is that possible for so many people who are flooded out of their homes? Do they find refuge somewhere higher??????
Yes i noticed that too. Was happy to see that. Thank God the flood water wasn't higher otherwise there would have been more pressure on those sandbags which they would have then succumbed to.
That submerged narrow boat is about a quarter of a mile from where I live, those trapped horses (and cows on their little island) are just over a mile further along, and that river runs along the bottom of my road. The marker said the water was 8'6" higher than usual, and despite the opposite bank being lower and open fields taking most of the water, it still managed to breach the river wall and flood the village. I am very fortunate that my home isn't low enough for the water to reach it, and all we had was a bit of inconvenience from the roads being impassable. I have never seen it so high. It was still raining, and rained for another day and a half. My heart breaks for all those people whose homes or businesses have been damaged.
Building on a flood plain is like building on a fault line or at the bottom of a volcano. Our ancestors built their homes on the high lands for reasons beyond defence. England is wet. All year long. Damp like you can’t imagine.

isn't there this country nearby that is partially below sea level, yet stays dry?
maybe ask for advice and help?
The Netherlands are also suffering river floods and lost crops at this time.
@@kskssxoxskskss2189 then please search for similar footage in NL, luckily none on YT.
how can this flooding be biblical when gvmt reduced planned env. investments by 40 %?
It's not biblical as the bibles just a story. Fictional. This is global warming at its worst.
The UK Floods very often in certain areas It's nothing biblical... Just rain and buildings being built on flood plains. Also down to poor drains and blockages in the drains.
Biblical? It's just another drenched January in a neglected England.
Sympathy to those affected. All the mitigations are known but seems there is no accountability in the UK authorities anymore. Also 1000 homes affected, while awful, is not biblical.
That's a severe under estimation on the damage, it not a 1000. Its 1000s. Our council has cut millions in funding and is bankrupt. Avoidable with correct infrastructure investments and management. The excuses are poor. The Netherlands are living proof water is manageable. If you could see the devastation here it's huge.
In 2024, our planet enters a 12,000-year cosmic cycle. Since then natural disasters and cataclysms will intensify and occur much more often.

A few rivers have overflowed into flood plains like they have forever. How is this biblical?
This is neglect by all the councils and Govt. Too busy spending millions on looking after Illegals.
This could have been prevented .
Yes it probably is biblical . . . There's only one TRUTH fam the Lord Jesus Christ amen 🎚

What s shame God Bless Them..
'The Sunak Government.' Peculiar wording.
This is nothing new and the combination of rivers and waterways not getting dredged and too much building on floodplains makes it worse.
My heart breaks for everyone who has to suffer this kind of flooding. The helplessness is so overwhelming. All you can do is sit and watch the water rise higher and higher and pray your home is on high enough ground to be spared. I feel for the residents and for the many animals who are caught with nowhere to go.
People? When is the last time you talked to God??? Now is the time

The water is as swollen as it was in 2000 but not in the 17/1800 is was much higher then
I think you are trying to make a good point, but your use of English is atrocious. Are you foreign?
What everyone needs is not a car but a boat to get to the shops

2nd time in 4 years we have been devastatingly flooded, here in nottinghamshire, we have had to move to higher ground till the water resides.
😂😂😂😂 I'm so glad I live in Leeds.
I live in South London and was surprised to hear Hackney in East London had flooded also, although I'm sure it was nowhere near as bad... I just pray the River Thames doesn't break its banks.
All these floods are probably due to climate changes, and our incompetent government is not thinking and planning ahead.
Hi I love Nottingham it is the best city with two univercitys, a castle, Rock City, caves under the city, Down Loud and Bat Man's home. A deer park in a city. I could go on . Nottinghamshire is so very beautiful. I do love the River Trent. I had a boat and loved going up and down it. So looking at this make's one cry. 😢

From the end of 2024, the number and scale of natural disasters will increase multiple times worldwide. The reason for this is entering the cosmic cycle of 12000 years.
If we don't take action now, in 5-7 years it will be impossible to live on the planet. And not later than 2036 there will be a catastrophe, which will turn the Earth into a second Mars.
We still have a chance to save the planet and our own lives. The analytical report and ways to solve the problem are voiced here: "Global Crisis. The Responsibility" (online forum).
This is really awful. Can't imagine the property damage.
Plus the sewage is mixed with the flood water, so everything is contaminated 😮
Yes but Barrats, Bovis and all the money 🤑💰🤑 the Construction 🚧 Companies make it's more important particularly when some very rich MPs are shareholders.
The cost of home insurance has increase considerably due to flood claims. My house is in area of risk of flooding and my premium more than doubled.
However, as I live at the top of a hill the 135 ft church spire in my local town would need to be completely submerged before I was effected.
@@jjefferyworboys8138 ... Oh, lucky you... 🙄
Natural disasters are increasing rapidly. We all need to be prepared to face them. Learn what to do in different disasters, prepare emergency evacuation backpacks, and at least a week's supply of food and water in case of a loss of electricity, water and heating.
But the most important thing everyone needs to do now is to start talking openly about our biggest problem - climate and the true cause of its change - 12,000-year cosmic cycle.
All the details and solution on how to avoid the demise of the planet and all of humanity are voiced here: "Global Crisis. The Responsibility"

Do they find refuge somewhere higher??????
I'm from northwest and can't stop crying watching this😢
Those sandbags worked well, I've always been sceptical. But you could see there was no water in the gardens behind them @ 4:57.
Yes i noticed that too. Was happy to see that. Thank God the flood water wasn't higher otherwise there would have been more pressure on those sandbags which they would have then succumbed to.
Ever wondered why floodplains came to be called 'floodplains'?
I am so lucky to live on top of a hill.
In a mansion by any chance?

Me too, but not luck, by design. Buying property in low lying areas and close to rivers will always have a flood risk.

Instead of the carbuncle HS2, the cash could have been spent to protect/alleviate flooding.
,water,water,everywhere and none to spare!!??.😢
I hope and pray for you guys that the waters won't rise any higher. Stay strong. 🇺🇸
Drains not maintained, new housing into existing drainage systems can't cope.
Thinking of you all coping with these difficult conditions. Stay strong and safe. Eve xxxxxx
I am praying for these good British people in their time of crisis. 😇❤
Building on a flood plain is like building on a fault line or at the bottom of a volcano.
Our ancestors built their homes on the high lands for reasons beyond defence.
England is wet. All year long. Damp like you can’t imagine.
If any of you were in their predicament, you would see and feel all of their pain and suffering going through this, the hardship, so yes, it's terrible for them, it's not just another flood they're going through, their lives are ay stake.
HOE MANY WATERWAYS DREDGED??????????????????
Please keep allyour animals safe, they can't rescue themselves.
What a joke! God help us if there was a biblical flood!!
I am so devastated for you all. I live in Australia and I am so sick of seeing this here too. My heart goes out to you all. I will pray for you. I hope the water recedes soon.
It will if they dredge the rivers! It's neglect by the environmental agency's. To protect the greater crested newt mate! By design!😮

this is what happens when successive governments regardless of political party fail to look after infrastructure
I think you'll find it's Conservative governments that starve infrastructure and always have major cuts. You get what you vote for, the Conservative party have been in power for the last 13 years, and has held power for a total of 46 years since the end of world war two. They have always starved the country of investment in public services and in investment for the countries infrastructure.

Absolutely true. They’ve been doing this for years and years, then the media interview the gullible one’s, put words into their mouth and it fans the flames of the Climate Change shit show.

Can someone ask Mr Munak what he plans to do about the canal system? We have a large number of new build housing estates being built with all that ground water going straight into the canals and rivers rather than soaking into the ground. You can mess about with the drains as much as you like, the problem will keep getting worse! WE NEED BIGGER CANALS!
Who wouldn't prioritise tea and coffee at the local council when all your stuff has been destroyed in a flood?
Great thinking!
U know its bad when other media talks about rain in the UK
so horrible ,the damages and the repairs that'll be needed afterwards i hope the council will help. And for everyone affected, could there be way to start a fundraising page for the areas affected? god bless.

The problem is too much building, destroying countryside, we are too overcrowded on such a small island. It is pathetic yet the government turns a blind eye everytime..
Or - all across Britain, councils have done no maintenance of drainage in decades!
Not really biblical proportions, just flooding. So sorry for everyone who’s been affected by the FLOODING

Dredge the rivers so they flow fast and deep. Forget about the EU water directive which says rivers should be left in their natural state so protect wildlife. just get them all dredged for gods sake !

I remember the floods we had here in 2007. We hand news crews turning up and all people were interested in was those few people who had no insurance. Now it seems to be happening where people have got money it’s all very different. We were told to get on with it, i expect it will be a different story now.
