Thanks for the video. I just recently
obtained the 6000, like yours in good
shape. The printing on the controls
are not worn off and all functions
work well. The only thing is that the
antenna is missing the tip cover, for
which I would like replace the whole
    antenna. The reception ans sound
are very good on FM as one would
expect with Grundigs of this type.
    I had first obtained a 6000, which
cost more, in wood covering, but
was in not to functioning condition,
and I returned it to the seller quickly.
The antique radio repair place I
    contacted in Pennsylvania, wanted
$45.00 to look at that 6000, and he
stated it could cost several hundred
dollars for repairs. The one I returned
had the power supply and cord, which
I don't have with the other now. I also
do not have the SSB adapter.

+iamrichrocker I actually succeeded in restringing the dial without too much trouble, it helped that I had a set with an unbroken dial string for reference.

Great radio, brilliant video, as always. As for that belt. I'm no radio engineer but I'd be inclined to apply heat possibly with the use of a hair dryer etc. That may make it more malleable and less likely to snap... Bye for now.

+Peter Lorimer Thanks! I would think it would go back to normal once it cools down, since it's made of some kind of plastic (nylon?). Hopefully it holds...

I checking out a Satellit 6000 too. MW and LW are not working. The more I learn about this radio, the more I admire it. Problem is, I promised not to buy any more vintage radios. Thanks for posting.

It's a nice radio, but it could be tricky to fix that issue. I'd hold off unless the price was really good.

I know, it's been 4 years I posted the comment. My 6001 was fixed and restored to factory standards. What a great radio! And it is the most accurate analog dial radio I've ever seen. @@50sTransistorRadios

I have one 6000 and two 6001's. Only one of the 6001's works. It has some issues but is electrically OK and I don't have the guts or willpower to take it apart and make it perfect. I will probably wait until I need to replace the SW drum belt. It's hard to find a radio of this series that doesn't have any issues at all.
The replacement belt I bought is a higher quality flexible toothed belt, like you might see in a modern piece of electromechanical equipment. It has been a few years since I've researched the details of this belt. I bought mine from a German radio parts supplier. You probably can get them for a few bucks if you know the exact specifications. I think Continental makes them, but I'm not 100% sure.
You are lucky that your set still has the metal caps on the two small front panel knobs. Most of the time, these are missing. Or, someone has put on different knobs. I think Grundig at some point might have changed these small knobs to a newer design at some point during production. But I do not know this for certain.
These radios certainly have a loud and powerful sound. The "tone switch" just switches the tweeter speaker on and off. Very often, this switch or the band selector switches get dirty and the tweeter then either does not work or works only intermittently. From what I understand, the tweeter is enabled (even when switched on) only on the FM band or when the external input is used.

+Michael Witas I have measured up the orignal belt, but I couldn't find anything that was perfectly suitable, since it is a very odd belt, so I might have to plunk down the $30 or so to get one for my other set. My 6001 is missing one knob cap and my parts set has 2 mismatched knobs (one is the newer style 1 piece silver Grundig knob and other is from something else). It seems you are right about the the tweeter being active on FM only, that explains why AM doesn't sound as good as it does on other sets.

Nice items you are collecting ... were these German ones sold in the US back than or did you get them from aabroad via Ebay or so? I like those pieces of old style dignified, sedate technical equipment from the 60s and 70s, conserving that feeling of luxury that they do radiate ... I like your vids too.

    • @50sTransistorRadios

Thanks! Grundig radios were sold in the USA, although some sets that were not sold in the USA got brought back from Germany by troops that were stationed there. Very few of my radios were imported by me, because shipping from Europe is so expensive.

Greetings from California. Matt, thank you for the GRUNDIG Satellite 6000 video. I have 2 of the same receivers and one lost the band selector toothed belt. Placed order to “knobman” @ e.B.y, recommended by John Smith.
The Medium Wave dial cord also broke this (Feb 16, 2019) afternoon ! And like you did, I may copy the route from the undamaged 6000. Do you know an experienced GRUNDIG service person? Please let me know.
Thanks again for your video. Cheers.

I'm glad you liked my video Sree! I would say copying the dial cord routing of the other set is your best option, as these sets can be tricky to restring. Unfortunately I don't know of any Grundig experts I can point you to, but I wish you the best of luck on fixing your sets up!

Matt - I've used Scunci hair ties to replace belts on radios with success. Here's a link: www.amazon.com/dp/B00H3R27XG/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_nUMewbGTHY7K2 I think they are available in different sizes. Best, Don

    • @50sTransistorRadios
      @50sTransistorRadios  9 ปีที่แล้ว

+RestoreOldRadios That might work for while, since it does not need to supply a lot of torque, but it would probably slip little by little over time and get out of alignment, but I will keep that in mind for sets that use a normal belt. -Matt

I got one of those gear belts that might fit the Grundig. It measures 7.125" and it is .125" wide. If you want it, I will send it to you for free. Just let me know. Pete
