Intamin is really good at making compact ride, I think it kinda makes sense because Intmain can pack anything into small spaces but your right Intamin prefabrs are expensive maybe they could of gone with Gravity Group because they make also very compact woodies sometimes but are a lot cheaper.
It sounds like Balder ran much differently for you than it did for me in September 2017. I rode it on a cooler day too. All the airtime hills delivered sustained ejector airtime for me. They felt like the final hills on Expedition GeForce over and over again. I agree the layout is repetitive and if the airtime was weaker like you described on your visit, I probably wouldn't have liked the ride as much. Hopefully you just got a few bad rides on it!
that is the case i have bean to liseberg every year (not this year. and wen it is colder the ride is much bether for some reson. have evan riden it wen it was snowing that hurt
I just rode it recently. I believe everything Taylor doesn't like about Balder won't translate over to T-Express. In short, T-Express is the better version of Balder by a mile.
Can’t deny that it is not the most intense ride. Especially for coaster enthusiasts or adults. But when it was new we had nothing like it in Sweden and everybody was loving it. I remember looking up at is as a kid and for the first time understood the magnitude of a wooden rollercoaster. But I would say now with a kind of big evolution of coasters I’m Sweden, Balder is a perfect familythrill. The youngest will be terrified or overjoyed. The not the most daring ones will se it as really intense. The rest will have a good time
Another amazing review Taylor! You should do more ranking videos but like have it an every year tradition, like top 10 wooden coasters, airtime moments, etc.
Visited liseberg september 2019. I loved the rides on the backrow, first drop and that midcourse drop into the tunnel whip you put of your seat on a good day. I read somewhere that balder has a minimum timelimit it may not reach something like 51sec laptime or they will close ist. So balder seems to vary a bit in its laptime. For me i loved it, really special woodie - but i understand your suggestion for it beeing more a family ride
Thanks, Taylor. Good job describing what I've wondered while watch POV's. My biggest hope is that someone would purchase one of these again to keep them alive or maybe we'd see an updated version of the Intamin Pre-Fab. Looking at Cedar Point?
Taylor I’m not sure if this is already on your agenda but could you make a vide discussing the New S&S towers seats and what park could get them or just speak about your over all opinion on the concept?
I'm pretty sure one of the coasters that you didn't mind the repetitiveness on was Mystic Timbers if I were to guess? Or was it not necessarily repetitive?
You are partially right. Balder was designed to be a family friendly half extreme ride. Maybe a little confusing for you but Liseberg aims heavily at families and not thrill seekers first. Balder have won several awards as the best wooden coaster in Europe, btw.
It's a bit tamer because it was designed to be reminiscent of the scenic railway it replaced. There's nothing wrong with it having less airtime than Helix and it's a good stepping stone which is a feature a lot of parks miss out on. To compare it to El Toro is justified because of the type but it clearly wasn't designed to be the same thing so it isn't exactly fair.
I rode on Balder back in 2006, about a year after it opened. Coming from Norway, with our own "woodie" Thundercoaster, Balder did feel quite tame in comparison.
Hey Taylor!! I have a hard time with you giving Balder a 5, that seems kinda harsh. But, I can’t disagree with your reasoning. I kinda see how riding El Toro first would ruin that for you. To be honest, I have not ridden El Toro yet (was on the schedule for this past summer), but I have ridden the other 3 Intamin pre-fabs MANY times during multiple ERT sessions (Colossos 32, Balder 31, and T-Express over 50x)(2 multiple day visits to each park). I rode Colossos first, and it was incredible!! Over EVERY hill you’d end riding the upstop wheels until you slammed back down on the other side, creating (what we called) the Intamin fart. The buzz the ride made over each hill was undeniable!! And Yes, it is fairly intense! Your assessment of the airtime on Balder is fairly accurate (my opinion). The first time, I was surprised at the number of airtime hills, and that was quite enjoyable. Yeah, it’s not intense, but just became more and more fun each time I rode. (Yes, the steel crossbeam on the 4th drop can be touched with your hands. Won’t tell you how I know 😉 - OUCH!) But as you said, it becomes quite repetitive, but for me, didn’t detract from the “fun” factor. Now, T-Express was a whole different ballgame!! Everland got exactly what they ordered - first 1/2 of El Toro, second 1/2 of Balder. The drop and surrounding valley are quite exceptional!! Steep, blistering fast, and pre-fab smooth!! The transition into the Balder section, and the rest of the layout, was a bit faster than Balder, giving those airtime moments a little more kick to them. Probably still my #1 wood coaster. Strangely, the second best coaster in the park at the time. Eagle Fortress being #1. EF would still be my #1 coaster of all time (out of 1000+) if it were still around today. All that being said, of the 3 pre-fabs I would rank them 1. T-Express 9.2 2. Colossos 9.0 Big and fast, just a tad bit short as you slam into the brakes with a lot unutilized energy. 3. Balder 7.2 A lot of fun, descent airtime, but could be so much more (like twice around the layout instead of 3x) I suspect that El Toro would be #1 for me on this list, when I get there (too much international travel over the years). I do understand your reasoning, I just feel a 5 is kind of low. Jeff (BTW - next time you go to Knoebels, ride Phoenix in the 3rd row. As in 1.3! Not the very front (lame), not the very back(ok), but 1.3! VASTLY different animal in the airtime department!)
@jjmailmain Hate to break it to you but Colossos is not like that anymore. after the first hills, it runs way slower than before the retracking and only gives mild airtime. If you liked old Colossos though, you will absolutely love El Toro because it really is a denser, more extreme colossos with a way better second half. PS: I agree that a 5/10 is a bit harsh for balder, even though all arguments are valid. I'd give it a 7 as well.
You summed that up perfectly .. we were pretty underwhelmed with it after all the hype! I know it's quite a big coaster ,but it did feel like a family ride.. I think the smoothness of it doesn't help either. If it had a rickety ,slightly rough ride like a traditional..it would help ... A LOT!
It seems like Intamin was more confident with the pacing of the ride by comparing it to a regular wooden coaster even though the prefab trains lose a lot more speed than even PTC trains. They did not think the pacing would crawl as much in the second half leading to it being more boring as the ride went on. This ride also harkens back to the Ride of Steel clones in there wired layout, with the first drop looking like a mini Hive Dive.
If THIS coaster has an identity crisis then I can't wait to see what he has to say about Divertical ! Because that ride has the exact same problem, but much worse.
what is classified as an enthusiast? Because I only have 35 credits but I love roller coasters and figure out as much as I can about all of them no matter which continent or park. Just wanted to know because I classify myself as an enthusiast but I don't know if I am really classified since I'm 13 and can barely go to amusement parks. I also classify my home parks lucky since I live in Ohio so I have kings island and cedar point. I have also gone to Carowinds for only a few hours so I could ride vortex (regret), fury325, intimidation, etc.
I prefer Helix (obviously) and thought Lisebergbanan was okay, so probably second best. Valkyria wasn’t open for me so I can’t speak on how that ride is.
I found this coaster to be more fun then helix, when we went on this earlier this year it literally flied. i know its been retracked and i dont know if that affected it because that ending was crazy
Do you think you could please review Katun at mirabilandia? I saw you rode that 2 years ago as well and was wondering what your thoughts were since I think you preferred it to Ispeed in the same park
I would have liked to see more Pre Frabricated wooden coasters built. In theory it's a better idea in coaster construction (having everything done at the factory and just plugging it in on site). And as for being in a compact land area; you make do with what you have to work with (like Knott's Berry Farm and Grona Lund)
Clearly expectations and framing mean a lot to you. Kentucky Flyer got a 10/10 because you expected a family coaster and got a very good one. You came in viewing Balder as a smaller Intamin prefab and then expected a really great thrill coaster (perhaps a tamer smaller El Toro) and it didn't live up to those expectations and it got a 5/10. It makes me wonder how you'd rate this ride if you had ridden it without being told anything about it or even having seen the structure before getting on it.
The best ejector airtime I've had was on Coaster at PNE in Vancouver BC. NOT a family coaster. It's objectively intense and scary, and I'll ride anything.
I rode mid train two days ago and my ass was out of the seat, more than it was in it. As some have claimed, I agree it’s one of the best coasters in Europe. Voted best in the world in 2003 and 2005.
I Love Balder. I prefer it over Many woodies. All of my 3 rides where in the back of the Train, and boi did it exceed expectations. First Drop in the back is PHENOMENAL. Headchoppers + rapid ejector pull. The Hills all gave fantastic air, pretty strong. And I don't mind the repetitive Layout At all. With the re Tracking of Colossos, Balder is superior imo. Better Drop and airtime. And yes, Balder > Mystic Timbers. Balder is my Second Favorite Woodie at the Moment because it very much exceeded expectations.
I think you should do another review of El Toro, It was your number 2 in your last top 25 coasters but you did not seem like it felt that way in the review imo.
I understand what you are saying. Personally I liked this coaster a lot more than any coaster in the park.Ill give it a 8/10. But it doesn't even compare to Wildfire tho
Yeah Balder is one of their smaller pre-fabricated wooden coasters, and I think ElToroRyan said it best: these Intamin pre-fabricated wooden coasters are definitely better as bigger rides. When you look at the building techniques Intamin used, these wood coasters are expensive to manufacture. I mean look at El Toro, that cost $28 million to build, and T Express costs $36 million to build. Because of the larger elements, larger trains, and crazier airtime you can pack in, these wood coasters are definitely better when a park has plenty of money to build a massive wood coaster that you can't get from traditional building methods. But it's one of the earlier ones, opening in 2003, so Intamin has definitely improved the pre-fabricated wood coaster with El Toro, and then T Express combining the best of El Toro, with Balder's second half~
I loved it. I think it has got a smooth but very enjoyable airtime and layout. It sounds crazy, but I even like it more than "El Toro". Anyways I think it is not completely fair to compare them as the sice difference is just huge. They don't play the same game and Balder is perfect for the role it is playing at Liseberg
Good analysis. Since I found El Toro too intense, perhaps it's a ride for tweens and seniors like me---but what an odd "audience" for a coaster that would be.
I live in sweden and have been to Liseberg a few Times and I Will say that you have your dive coaster witch focus on The drop and helix with it loops and then balder for air time. Just skip Lisebergsbanan as a good coaster it need to be replaced by a bnm.
they'd struggle to fit a B&M onto the hillside! It's surprising enough that B&M are doing a complicated layout at Groena Lund as B&M don't usually do things that complicated. Also Lisebergbanan is such a classic!
Makes sense, i've never ridden it but from povs and off ride footage the layout did look pretty boring and repetitive. I didn't understand the hype surrounding the ride. That drop does look super unique though!
It is frustrating because the track design is expensive but it can sustain much greater force than normal wooden track, but balder doesn’t use this to its advantage like el toro does. It almost seems pointless that it is a prefab because it was more than twice the amount then a GCI but it isn’t doing anything special
I'll give you that everything you said may have been true (haven't ridden it because I'm from 'Murica and am broke), but even so, a 5 sounds a bit harsh. I'd have thought based on what you said 6, simply because you've said before anything below a 5 is outright bad. But hey, your video, your opinion.
The fact you're still making reviews for European coasters makes me hope for a Katun review someday

Did PewDiePie go on this? It is in the town where he grew up
Good analysis. Since I found El Toro too intense, perhaps it's a ride for tweens and seniors like me---but what an odd "audience" for a coaster that would be.
Valkyria Review ?
i dont think he got to ride Valkyria since it wasn't open yet when he was there

For me Balder is the second best wooden coaster next to El toro
Please review Katun
I live in sweden and have been to Liseberg a few Times and I Will say that you have your dive coaster witch focus on The drop and helix with it loops and then balder for air time. Just skip Lisebergsbanan as a good coaster it need to be replaced by a bnm.
they'd struggle to fit a B&M onto the hillside! It's surprising enough that B&M are doing a complicated layout at Groena Lund as B&M don't usually do things that complicated. Also Lisebergbanan is such a classic!
for me Lisebergbanan was a surprise. Its old but has aged well and packs fun and surprisingly forceful corners for such an old ride
Who else misread the title and thumbnail as "Bladder?!?"
Lol. I would’ve been fine with el toro as a young kid. I was a little psycho. 😂
You are correct sir!
Makes sense, i've never ridden it but from povs and off ride footage the layout did look pretty boring and repetitive. I didn't understand the hype surrounding the ride. That drop does look super unique though!
Go watch a POV of T Express, it looks like it has the second half of Balder and it scares me that it will be overrated when u ride it
It is frustrating because the track design is expensive but it can sustain much greater force than normal wooden track, but balder doesn’t use this to its advantage like el toro does. It almost seems pointless that it is a prefab because it was more than twice the amount then a GCI but it isn’t doing anything special
Day 3 of asking to bring back Coaster Parody Videos
please go and reride helix :)
Hasn’t someone said that this is likely to not stay around due to the awful maintenance this requires.
👉Once El Toro always El Toro!!! No comparison at all...😁🎢🇧🇷
I'll give you that everything you said may have been true (haven't ridden it because I'm from 'Murica and am broke), but even so, a 5 sounds a bit harsh. I'd have thought based on what you said 6, simply because you've said before anything below a 5 is outright bad. But hey, your video, your opinion.
5 is 'meh.' a 6 or above is good, a 4 and below is bad. this isn't a 'bad' ride, its just an 'okay' ride
