  • A lot of us, even when we get a top end bike, will just keep the bike standard. However, there are a lot of gains, both in terms of speed and comfort, that can be made by changing your handlebars, saddle, pedals and shoes. Alex shows you how changing the contact points on your bike, can make a marked difference in it's performance!

      Yes, since I converted a 90's steel trekking bike into a "modern" singlespeed road bike. I am now using a blb drop bar, sqlab 612 ergowave active saddle, byschulz g.2 ST seatpost, 32mm Continental GP 5000 tyres.
      This bike basically turned my into a half decent bike mechanic and enthusiast :)

      Saddles are import no doubt . But in my limited experience you can make alot of sattles work. But what gets me every time . Why stock handlebars are always super wide. My 56frame had a 44 handlebar . If I would have get a 58 it would have been 46 . That is to wide for every person I know

      I would also want to be able to change the crank length. I hate that most 56 frames come equipped with 175 cranks. I have to immediately change them to 170s.

    My 16 year old aluminum frame road bike is now more comfortable after upgrading to a narrower compact Deda RHM aluminum bars and a lighter padded full carbon saddle and a carbon seatpost.
    This was my best bang for the buck upgrade a year ago. Now my bike is 180 grams lighter and more comfortable.

    Good point about handlebar width. I'm a tall rider and the majority of road bikes at my size come stock with 44cm width bars. Apparently they think tall means I have wide shoulders which is hardly the case for my skinny self. I'm on 41cm bars now and its much better, more comfy and as a bonus more aero.

    I have a 2020 SL6 pro Tarmac. I switched the OEM stem and handle bars for Zipp carbon stem and bars, I get less vibration through them now plus the bike lost like 100grams. I broke down and got the Fizik Antares 0.0 @140 grams, lost like 80grams compared to the OEM saddle. Then I broke down and switched out the Roval 50mm carbon wheels for Zipp 303 firecrest wheel set, 300grams lighter plus the 25mm internal rim width with 28mm skins rolling @62psi rear, 58psi front. Where the bike lost the most weight, I got a smaller saddle bag slimmed down what I need out on the road to the bare minimum, that saved a fair amount of grams. Heck my bottle cages add up to 36grams or 18grams each.

    I have my bar/stem set up mostly slammed (-17 degrees) and 120mm paired to 380mm wide compact bars. The original spec was 110/420mm at - 10 degrees. I can stretch out into an aero position without having to shift my weight too far forward on the drops. Not bought expensive components but decent lightweight alloy ones which meant I also had a decent weight saving over the OEM spec components.

    I change some amount of saddles. From selle, fizik, prologo, spz...on and on. At the end looks like it was pedal clit an sadle hight problem. Try many things and get to result my self. Clits i mount too much back like they say us in loots of wideos. I check my wery old mtb spd and combine. Move clits forward, lift sadle 5mm and looks fine now. Now i can swap saddles and every sadle is on yob....funy solution.
    We yust do the good yob 20 or more years back with setting my old mtb (still in use) with much simplier infos and knowlage we have so far back.
    Point is like in track days with superbike (motorbike) you schould keep improowing in small steps when you chanke setup. Atherwise you get lost and you allways have to go on base setup ( have ti write down every change from base). Keep it simple for hoby riders is most important.

  • @sventice
    @sventice 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm not a fan of internally routed, integrated handlebars. It looks nice and clean, but the aero benefits are negligible if you ride at sustained speeds achievable by most mortal riders. If you want to make a significant adjustment, like reach, you have to replace the whole assembly. Most importantly, cable maintenance, usually a manageable if not trivial task, is many times more difficult when you're routing internally through the head tube, and usually requires someone who actually knows what they're doing. (And even skilled bike mechanics hate them.) It's annoying that bicycle/component makers have noticed what car manufacturers have been doing for decades and decided to emulate them.

    • @calebgonsalves2970
      @calebgonsalves2970 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But hear me out one moment.
      If you're getting an integrated handlebar before being at least 90% sure about your handlebar fit, that's your first mistake.
      And modern groupsets and pricing means that you'll have wireless shifting at the cost where you'll get integrated handlebars and hydraulic braking both of which are compatible and with proper installation don't need any cable maintenance.
      Stuff is bound to be a nag but imo on my fully externally routed bike, id rather do the whole carfuffle and finish the story of cables once and for all while setting the bike up.

    Dear Alex unfortunately some of your advice is a bit out of date !! Most decent bike fitters will tell you that knee over pedal axel is not a useful measure anymore ( mainly because nobody has standard legs ) it used to be used back in the 70’s 80’s with old geometry etc as a guide but is now thought to be more trouble. Also although saddles are a great upgrade, it’s almost impossible to get one that’s suitable unless you already have the right balance of weight between hands and bum!! If you have been suffering with numb hands because bars are too wide or wrong height and have made adjustments to counter this your probably now have too much weight distribution towards your bum and therefore you could stick a sofa on your saddle and it won’t be comfortable. I literally brought 15 saddles over about 3-4 years and it wasn’t until I did a proper bike fit with good pressure mapping etc did I ever resolve any of the things you indicated. These methods maybe suitable for someone bumbling to the shops and back but for the type of riders who ride bikes like yours …. A good ( make sure they are recommended) bike fit is the best place to start …. I love the show and I’m not nor do I know a bike fitter 😆 but think you should brush up on the latest 👍🏼👍🏼

    I always choose comfort over price. I've had a terrible time with saddle sores and undercarriage numbness. I've had multiple bike fits, tired multiple saddles, different bibs with better chamois, different types of creams and even got a new bike. I finally tried the new saddle from S-works and I'm 90% better. Is the saddle expensive? Yes but less than everything else I tried all together, so cost is sometimes relative.

I’ve never had an issue with a handlebar from a stock bike from a reputable bike brand. And the cost of Maint of that bar would have been worth covering. And if it allows easy transportation? Might not sell more bars but important info.

But to make the bikes still desirable I would also order them to make them desirable and better than all other brands do. No, it's actually quite normal with certain geometries and if you have a small bike. You never turn the wheel that far on corners anyway.
      I did get scared when I noticed my toes touching the front wheel on my new road bike though.

    The more money spent DOES not equate to a more comfortable ride. GCN really just brainwashes new comers.

      Hey Jona, have you watched the video? I don't recall saying you need to spend more money to be comfortable. Quite the opposite actually, there are loads of low cost options that will help😎
