For accurate selection of complimentary colors, a printed color wheel aid seems to work well. The Color Wheel Company, for instance, makes a good selection of these. They're often found at art supply stores, and of course online. Once you've selected a color scheme, use a HuesOnCue 'TriaDart' parametric dispenser to meter and mix your colors instantly and reliably. By the way, there is a free downloadable/ printable color catalog that comes with TriaDart. Feel free to give these items a shot.

In the color wheel picture, I shows that purple is red & violet mixed together but actually, it is crimson which is purple and red/magenta and violet is Purple + Blue

I'm writing a story about dragons.
Cyan, Magenta and Yellow are the subtractive color primaries not Red, Blue and Yellow.
This is important to note because it actually makes the whole color wheel make sense, especially when you see how it relates to additive colors.
When working with light, RGB (red, green, blue) are your primaries, and your secondary colors are, wait for it... CMY (cyan, magenta and yellow).
When working with pigments it's the exact inverse, CMY are your primaries and your secondaries are RGB.
Using a Red, Blue, Yellow palette is perfectly fine, but it's important to know that it's a limited palette, you will never be able to mix cyan or magenta with RBY.
Even a decent green is not possible with RBY as blue is too far from yellow chromatically to mix a pure color.
Heck, if you somehow had access to impossibly pure colors mixing equal amounts of yellow and blue would make pure black instead of green, same thing happens if you try to make purple using red and blue.
That's because you're mixing all the primary (CMY) colors together at the same time.
Wait but if you have Red, Yellow, Blue, White, and Black as your colors you can make every color and every shade of that color (including cyan and magenta) :p.

No combination of red, blue, yellow, white or black will give you cyan or magenta.
With cyan magenta and yellow you can make blue and red though.
