"Out of all the metallic dragons, telling a gold dragon apart is actually the easiest considering the overwhelyingly unique feature-"
(Looks at impossiblt bright gold coloring)
"Of their whiskers!"
... sure.
If you are in a dark cave using Darkvision to see, you are unable to make out colors. So, you have to look for physical characteristics that can be made out in shades of gray. Tentacles from the face are pretty good as far as that is concerned.
Made me laugh xD
@Alex Davies First, there are different shades of gold. second, you don't have to get that close, those whiskers are very prominent. Third, there could be other factors.
@Alex Davies By the time you can see his shades of grey he can see you. Gold dragons have darkvision to 120ft, however, normal darkvision only goes to 60. You would need to extend your darkvision beyond 120 ft for it to matter either way. Also, you could see his whiskers at 60ft as long as you can see his face.
@Alex Davies actually no, it wouldnt be that easy
You could compare colours, but for it to be effective you would need to hold both the coin and the dragon closely so that different in light (in this case, lack of it) could make misjudge something. And even in dark, is hard to sepparate things like silver and copper or gold apart. Aside that, it depends on the age. Gold dragons dont simple shine, they are a bright yellow when they are born, but old dragons would have all their bodies covered in mettalic tones. With the sun or fire brightening it, he would look shiny as the sun itself, but in the dark, he would just appear as a dragon
Just like a house cat or a tiger, who can be bright orange, but when they are hunting at night you are simply unable to say something other than "they arent black/ they have some light colour"

Not quite. Time is relative. A being with such long life, will count the many thousands of years a much, much quicker than a human who lives to 75ish on average.

If the party approaches them after the battle, before they head off, they'll hear the couple talking about their performance in a rather flippant way. Yes! More dragons! I'm planning a heavily draconic campaign, so this has been excellent!
Plan well and be sure to execute the campaign without too many side quests friend and heres hoping you and your players enjoy!!
Can you send me some information about it? I play D&D, & it could be a nice thing to give to my Dungeon Master when my characters are at higher levels. Thanks!!
If you are running a pathfinder game, then Look up Tananims. they are a player-focused style of dragon race. They are fascinating.
Iron!
Yes ! My players killed their first half-red dragon veteran, and they're working for a bronze dragon, even if they don't know it yet.
My favorite dragon is actually the Brass Dragon because I love the idea of a dragon obsessed w/ conversation. Kinda like Paarthurnax from Skyrim. As for my favorite video, I liked the Bronze Dragon video because i think it provided the most info on the dragon type. I certainly had never heard of a Bronze Dragon tyrant, interesting concept though.
heres a hook for you, a bronze dragon that can polymorph. and looks human, is a bard, but is a lawyer in waterdeep for the conversations and debates. lmao
@@DracosDiabolis that seems interesting
@@alee48916_masry well, it would work out kinda like this. the city pays the dragon for his lofty attorney fees. and that goes to his horde. but for the footwork for cases and sometimes things on the more shadier side for cases and whatnot. the dragon would hire "freelancers" to get these "trivial things" done. Gold dragons are Batmen of dragonkind.
Why people, obsessed with justice and law, are doing hoarding?
except Bruce Wayne is a philanthropist with his money so not hoarding but still a billionaire.. Waynetech is an insanely profitable business after all.
-Why people, obsessed with justice and law, are doing hoarding?-
If you have a hoard you might have more options to make Humanoids interested in doing you services that lead to Justice.
Or maybe because every coin you as a Golddragon has, an evil creature has not. ;)
When dragons die they eat their hoards, kind of a ticket to dragon's heaven. Also they use it to help righteous people, and they are protecting dangerous magical items. Not forget also that you can collect a hoard without stealing or harming, so justice and hoarding are not enemies, and gold dragons have nothing in common with today business men
@@gblakney1 batman needs to be defunded or the guillotine is coming
So that is why my character is confused with Batman and maybe Superman and Gold diggers..
I’m excited about Silver Dragons. But Gold Dragons are a close second, with blue dragons being a surprisingly close third.
Silvers are my favorite metallic too, though Greens are my favorite chromatic; with blue being second.
I have an interesting concept:
A gold dragon that shares a mostly abandoned castle with a lich now the reason the gold dragon shares the castle is because 1. The lich occupied the castle first and 2. The lich is morally good
Now one of the interesting things is that the lich is still a necromancer and he throws parties that last for years at a time wich annoys the gold dragon sometimes to the point of leaving just so that he can sleep and that literal army of undead partygoers mainly just keeps growing to the point that most of his undead allies have free will
The Sorcerer in my party is a dragon-blooded Tiefling, with Gold dragon blood. (one side of the family had the dragon blood, the other supplied the Tiefling part). This SERIOUSLY screwed with the head of the Gold Dragon the party encountered in the Rise of Tiamat campaign, especially since I had it that it was that SAME gold dragon that the draconic ancestry came from, and he could smell it.
Gotta try them all that's, what what their mama used to say
I like the Metallic Dragons a lot. And I would like to see Rhexx cover the Gem Dragons.
I really hope a future 5e supplement brings back the Gem and Brown Dragons.
@@groudonmario That would be nice.
There is an expansion made by Matthew Colville which included Gem Dragons.

I love all this dragon lore. My favourite D&D manual was the Draconomicon from 2nd edition.
In particular the part where they explained mixed dragon-kin.
My first Draconic BBEG was a Purple Dragon. Lived where the desert met the mountain range. His lair was like the dunes turned ashen, and magma flowed in rivers.
Had electric breath, and fire immunity.
I did a purple dragon that breathed an electfried fireball or a flaming lightning strike
A couple of Gold Dragons debating ethics and philosophy while disguised as mortals would be an excellent way at solving the "DM is going to bring their new significant other to the table who has never played before" scenario. That way the new player could come with an NPC who challenges the new player, only stepping in when the new player is significantly failing.
As someone who is branching into dming instead of only playing, I love how in depth and interesting these videos are. Thank you for doing them, please do more! You have a talent for this, for sure!
My favorite dragon so far has been the bronze dragon, I find them very interesting! I would love to put one in a campaign.

Oh I'm totally using this knowledge to create one of the Golden celestial dragons of Chinese lore as the ruling deity of my asian country. Thank you for this information!
Nice video. My favorite Gold Dragon was one I placed as a shop-keeper (gem dealer) in one of my towns. She was there for an obscure reason of her own which I never fully wrote up, but she made an interesting patron for my players, and an occasional fatal encounter for a few very foolish thieves...
I actually love taking inspiration from Shadowrun when it comes to polymorph and dragons, which helps to answer the conundrum of:
"Why would a superpowerful creature NOT be in a small form if it could retain all its powers?"
And the answer, because it would become vulnerable. A 50ft dragon might be able to walk through normal doors and corridors or pass amongst the local populace while polymorphed as a human, but because of this, the dragon would also be much more vulnerable and weaker in this form. They could be killed much the same way as any human could.
Polymorph and form changing seems to be in overabundance in DND much like Darkvision, and I enjoy giving creatures a valid reason to stay in their original forms without looking like fools.
I don't know about Shadowrun but I remember seeing somewhere that because Polymorph works differently for Gold Dragons, they retain all their stats. I found this while trying to make a character who was really a Dragon in disguise and saw that and it led to the joke of while with the party he would pretend to get knocked out way sooner than he would for legitimately (because if he loses consciousness for real he'd revert to his true form) and after a bit the cleric seemed to catch on that he was faking his injuries but assumed he was just being a coward. So it lead to the hilarity of her getting aggressive in fixing him up to a point of her telling him to "suck it up, butter cup" and showing the others he's fine. Maybe I misread it, but I found it funny. You'd think someone might have been tipped off sooner since his name was "Gil"
As a new D&D player(roughly 1 year since starting to play) in 2 campaigns, one of which is with just me and my two roommates where we're learning how to get better at being players, and rotating who DMs to learn even more... Your videos are really helping me learn the lore and getting my part of our campaign planned out.
Thank you a million times over!!
I like Silvers the most, mostly as a mixture of visuals and because some odd things about them scream 'good dragon' to me. The gold dragon is also like that, but it's more Eastern design sort of made that a default thing to me, while the Silver is much more clearly a Western dragon but also still clearly a noble being. That they serve as a direct rival to the Red Dragon, the most powerful of the Chromatic dragons also helps there.
Love your videos. I've been telling all my dnd players to watch them because not only do you go over the info you tell it like a story which is both exciting and fun to listen to. I actually listened to most of your videos while I had a 7.5hour drive yesterday and couldn't put down your playlist of DnD Lore.
These dragon videos have all been great, I've been running a campaign that gas a very heavy focus around dragon and having the extra insight that isn't always covered in the core book has been really useful to flesh out the dragon characters.

Red dragon is my favorite as I play assassin more often than not, basically stealth is a pretty useful skill for scouting, damage, getting past foes I would never be capable of fighting myself, pickpocket (way easier while sneaking), and uses Dex which is kinda great how the class relies on that one stat allowing me to focus on it more- bad if diseased but that is what the cleric is for.
Reason why that my favorite dragon is red is because a gold would not help a neutral/evil character, a red dragon though is admittedly hard to convince to work with you but that is what meat and treasure are for. Basically one session I managed to barely yoink a red dragons egg and managed to form a bond with the hatchling discussing strategy and feeding him- basically when old and durable enough he can attack others out of the blue and while he deals with the tanky barbarians, clerics, etc. I deal with the other rogues and go directly for mages and then join on his end where we basically clean up shop. Our teams mage even got him some 1st-2nd level spells. That was a very fun campaign.
I really liked this one! It’s informative, interesting, and gives insight on their dragonic society I didn’t know. I would love to see the facts of the Silver Dragon next!
So, we follow up with Silver, and the remaining Chromatic Dragons? Green, Red and White. I am loving the videos btw, never thought the dragons could be so amazing. I am in love with them now.

Brown dragons don't have wings in D&D.
Loving all these videos Rhexx, this information makes the world of D&D feel substantial and I sincerely hope you keep going, I particularly want to see stuff on the Thri-kreen
Once you brought up their mating habits, you reminded me of the time my character in the last campaign I was a part of had to scare off a gold Dragon. Earlier, my character had accidentally got himself married to a silver dragon. The silver Dragon decided she liked my character enough that she wanted to stick with him after they sorted things out. However, a gold Dragon who had set his sights on my wife wasn't too happy about this arrangement and decided to pester us until my character had enough and proceeded to beat the ever-living daylights out of the jerk. This almost started a war between the gold and silver dragons until Bahamut the Platinum Dragon stepped in and told everyone to chill and the gold Dragon who started this mess to lay off, or he would let my character hunt him down, kill him, and eat him. That part was more of a bluff than anything since that would have gone against my alignment. But hey, it worked.
I like Silver Dragons.....saving the best for last I hope!
Silvers are like Golds, but more sociable with humans, a bit more moderate and flexible, and take less extreme and collateral damage causing damage/ in the quest for justice.
>Silvers are like Golds, but more sociable with humans

Mr. Rhexx, you definitely need a D&D series of your own since you already know do much lore, you would be an amazing DM
Now I'm thinking about a gold dragon plucking a stuck diamond out of its teeth with its whiskers.
To be honest I've always been a huge fan of white dragons, used them a lot in some stores/campaigns here and there. My favorite of yours was a dragon I often ignored, the copper dragon which I'm now incorporating into my next project/campaign, loved your video and learning about em.

Thanks for the work man. Informative and fun.
My actual question going into this video: Where do gold dragons get their hordes from?
It's gotta come from somewhere, right? Do they hire themselves out explicitly as dragons, clashing with their tendency to remain in disguise? Do they keep the ill-gotten gains of bandits and villains despite any protests to the contrary? Or does every gold dragon have a dark and terrible past of looting and bloodshed that it keeps hidden at all costs?
Add this heedless and globally organized gold-dragon-mafia with collective control over vast sums of wealth and hordes of magic items into the picture and it seems reeeeaal sketchy to me.
They seek out adventure as polymorphed entities and hoard the treasure and rewards they acquire to help fund their wizard study.
Or they set themselves up as the benevolent overlords of humanoid society, acquiring wealth by taxes and tributes from their subjects.
This is the first time I've heard someone say, "click the dislike button if you disliked it"
I like that, it's honest and is really the words of a content creator that is motivated to become better.
As for the video I loved it found it interesting and helpful and I love dnd dragons! Keep up the good work!
I love the idea of an adventuring party being invited into a gold dragons house and most of the items in there horde are non-magical works of art and when the players ask why it has so many of them it says something like "gold and gemstones maybe beautiful, but these works of art represent the value of hard work, the passion of those who dedicate there life to creating works of art, and the imagination and creativity possessed by beings of all walks of life, to me, that is far more valuable than any amount of gold or precious gemstones."
WAIT. Gold dragons prefer to be polymorphed? Soooo..... They are the furries of dragon kind?
TigerRod it is cliche.
...what?
Yes, because the Silver Dragons are the Weebs of the Dragon World
no that would be the Steel dragons. seriously go check that one out it gets pretty weird.
Most metallic dragons seem to prefer being polymorphed.
I know it’s little too late, but I’ve been absolutely adoring your dragons series! It and the other monster videos have been so insightful for me building my adventure!
I 100% loved the Copper dragon video my man! I love the Copper dragon themselves even more because of that video, I'm not good at making up jokes so I'd be terrible at portraying one but hearing they love to pull pranks and outwit and humiliate their foe in combat gave me so many ideas for trying to and generally liked how that video was somehow shorter then this one but felt a bit longer, maybe because I was engrossed and had to pause to laugh at some of the things you described them trying to do in the middle of a fight.
Thank you for your hard work , I'm elder scrolls fan and never played DnD . your lore videos really helps me with my anxiety. The stories get me out of this world every time. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
This ties in AMAZINGLY WITH MY CAMPAIGN! YESSSSS!
I remember there was once a campaign my group had with a country of dragons it was the origin of the progenitor dragon the one that all dragons are descended from one city was controlled by bronze and gold dragons and the moment you walk into the city anything large enough to qualify in the dragon size is forcibly polymorphed into a creature fitting it's sentience
My favourite colour of Dragon is Red - they are the iconic evil tyrants, emblematic of the Western archetype. A fiery beast, covetous and quick to anger - a fearsome foe slumbering atop a hoard of magnificent treasure.
My favourite video so far was the Black, having a straightforward title that gets straight to the meat of the lore without relying on clickbait.
I do think the clickbait thing is a running joke though.
Your lore videos are captivating, and I'm loving the dragon videos. The way you describe things is comprehensive, and makes perfect sense. After the proper dragons, I would love to see a video on the lore of dragon turtles! They are strange, but fascinating, and I would love to see what kind of lore you have on them.
Todd Lockwood’s artwork pretty much shaped my interest in fantasy to be something permanent. Prior to my exposure to his work, I was nothing more than just a filthy casual...
I don't always watch new Rhexx videos, but
I lied.
This series has given me an idea for an NPC: a chromatic dragon who isn’t evil and makes their lair near a town, but seven miles away so the town doesn’t need to deal with the dragon’s magical effects on the area.
They’ve perhaps even made friends with the town, maybe acting as a guard in exchange for food and items for their hoard. The party just so happens to see someone take a cart toward the obviously hazardous territory of the dragon, the border of which is only a mile away.
THANK YOU!
for telling me about the resplendent.
You gave me an epic quest Idea where the party's gold dragon friend gets framed, stands trial, and all of them get rapped up in an assassination plot.
It would be awesome if u could do tiamat and bahamuth in the future! Love your D&D videos! Keep up the amazing work!
I'd love to be able to play a campaign under you as a DM you have so much lore knowledge it's insane to be able to see you put it all in action
But do they "like" killing? If you had a chaotic neutral P.C. that did something foolish that could be perceived as evil, would they be looking at a fire breath?Rather than the bronze dragon which would cart them off somewhere, for a month long stern talking to, in an iron cell?
I would say most certainly. A gold dragon is similar however they are a justice dragon and the gold dragon is closer to a mercenary
I certainly think if a gold dragon sees you commit a moral failing a crime or whatever it will cast suitable judgment upon ya.
one of my pcs was a young gold dragon who was tasked by her parents to kill a bandit horde who were attacking and killing travellers and villagers she being an avid reader was taken with the idea of adventure, good and morality being grey she opted for pacifism, and rather than kill the bandits she tried to talk to them her parents saw this and had to intervene to stop her getting hurt, but they weren’t happy with her they were furious they saw this as a chaotic act going against their wisdom and the law so they polymorphed her and stuck her in Dragonborn form, she wandered the world and became a paladin but that’s a different story, I do think gold dragons are extremely lawful, I think all dragons are either extremely lawful or chaotic with their acts of good and evil being very alien to us as they think through those lizard brains of theirs and they should be role played accordingly, they can commit great good or great evil but it’s always through that dragon lense,
Lordofrandom spaces34 well if they hunt evil forces down... it means they slay everything which is evil.
Fine details like that are up to the DM, but from what I've seen, heard and read about Golds they're pretty much the asshole Lawful Stupid paladin dragons. One misstep in front of them is justification to cook you alive where you stand.
I would enjoy being lectured by a Bronze Dragon, actually
Watching this video makes me very happy. Since the character I'm currently playing is literally a gold dragon.
Also 7:08 does anybody know which book images like this one comes from? Isn't it one of the Volo books?
I absolutely adore gold dragons. I have ever since first perusing through my friends collection of D&D 3.0 and 3.5 books. The way they look, the way they act, everything about them to me is amazing. In the homebrew campaign setting I have been working on for the better part of 20 years and have run multiple times, one of the most powerful creatures the PCs eventually encounter is a brilliant and playfully mischevious Great Wyrm Gold Dragon named Kalyik. Ive probably written more about Kalyik than anyone would ever want to know, but everyone who meets him ends up loving him, I think because hes so fleshed out in my mind as a character that hes very real. So thanks for giving me a few tidbits that I didnt know about golds to add to his back story!
Steel dragons I think are my favorite. It used to be silver but not anymore. Great job! Please keep up the great content!
My favorite dragons would probably be the crystal dragons, just cant recall what ones i loved the most.

Please do Faerie Dragon next.
Keep pumping out the dragon lore papa, you know I love ya for it!
That Todd Lockwood art of the gold dragon in the Monster Manual 3E/3.5E is one of my favorites. I had to buy the Huge Gold Dragon mini from the Giants of Legend set separately since it was so hard to get randomly. The color that it was painted wasn't what the picture looked like, so I bought a burnished gold paint from Games Workshop and fixed it up. A gold dragon mini would have been nice to see. I'm loving these dragons videos!
Thank you for making these videos. You asked what is your favorite dragon, well I love the concept of the Steel Dragon. They are not in 3rd through 5 editions (as far as I know). But the 2nd edition Monster Manual has great details. I would love to see a video about the Steel Dragons even if they may not be canon. They are much smaller than a typical dragon and they are very rare compared to other dragons. I also like the idea of how they prefer to live in cities, mostly Human dominated cities. Just an Idea.

Hopefully we should, I’m excited about that too.
I am currently playing 5 ancient metallic dragons that pose as humanoids with both class levels and innate magic. And one of them has a Flame Thrower!
(I'm the DM)
Arguably, the Adamantine Dragons (in the 2.0 MM, and ported to 3.5 in DR 321) are more powerful than the Gold. From the breath weapon, to dealing damage with physical attacks one size category larger than their size, to their SLAs. Not to mention they are fierce and deadly guardians of the Fields of Bytopia, preferring to tear apart any intruders first, and ask questions later...
Well so a prismatic and force dargons but they are so rare it hardly matters
Loving this series, can’t wait to see a video on silver dragons!
So Gold dragons don't have a dark secret like other metallic dragons ?
gold dragon dark secret. They use their whiskers to pick their noses when nobody is around
@@ghost_1033 Darkest piece of lore.
On a serious note, if there is any flaw that I tended to see in descriptions is that gold dragons tend to think that they know better than their lessers. 4e's Draconomicon: Metallic Dragons (a good source overall if you need a more moraly ambiguous take on a metallic) says that gold dragons can grow tyrannical or distant in their rule over mortals, and mentions Edarmirrik, a gold dragon demigod with portfolio of exactly that. Another example would be Mengkare of Pathinder's default setting of Golarion; seeing humans as pitiful and broken by the world, he created the island kingdom of Hermea where he tries to bring the human potential to maximum in his "Glorious Endevaor" with education, magic, and eugenics. Even the setting creators are not sure if he can be considered evil or not.
@@TenositSergeich Isn't that kinda common to all dragons tho' ?
@@KalaamNozalys I guess that in gold dragons it is the most visible and dangerous amongst metallics. Brasses and coppers are tricksters, bronzes are warriors, Silvers are paladins, and other metallics are even weirder. While they can assume possitions of leadership, they do so rarer than golds, the sages and rulers, who also tend to lord over much larger expanses when they do so.
I’m glad I discovered this video. I was going to put a lone desert ranger as a sort of anti-hero testing the party every-so-often, but I didn’t have any backstory or race ideas for him. And having him as a polymorphed gold dragon just makes sense now! Really appreciating these helpful vids! Keep it up!

OMG I LOVE these Dragon Lore vids...Like I how the monster manual is supposed to be all the info on the monsters but it's not...but especially Dragons like I had no idea there was so much vital info and secrets the Monster Manual simply doesn't tell u...and its fantastic seriously I LOVE Dragons and as such I love these DND lore vids the most...and WOW I gotta say Gold Dragons are officially my most personal favorite metallic...Now I really can't wait to see the secrets on Green Dragons because thats my most personal favorite Dragon in DND because they're such awesome campaign villains since they're masterminds and green is my favorite color so again awesome video and I can't for more.
Love these videos!!
I cant wait to see my favorite dragon up here, its silver.
My favorite one you've covered so far has to be the brass dragon mostly because I knew rather little, and it was so amusing.
Honestly I find myself waiting for these videos to come out, keep up the great content.
The image of a Gold Dragon using whiskers as somatic components is absolutely hilarious to me
Copper are my favourite. Wonderful tools for DMs and usually super fun too meet.
So if good dragons can become evil can evil dragons become good?
Paarthurnax says yes
@@bananalore8398 That Wyvern piece of shit? jk
Not sure if this counts but in Neverwinter Nights, I was able to make a white dragon give his oath to guard a village.
There are a group of dragons (I can't remember which) that would steal white dragon eggs and raise them to be good. Now in a homebrew setting you could just say that a gold dragon clan decided...
"hey how about we just have chromonic dragons kill chromonic dragon?"
"Sounds good. How do we do that?"
"Steal chromonic dragon eggs?"
"That doesn't sound very goo..."
"Shut up you. We are doing the steal evil dragon eggs plan."
Edit: Crystal dragons capture white dragon eggs. There a part of the gem dragons.
Nyghtking yes. Chromatic Dragons manual tells about some Chromatic dragons who are nice guys.
Most likely the whiskers are just a remnant from the days when they were the Chinese style dragon. It would be a good way to both differentiate them from the similar metallic colors quickly and serve as a way to memorialize the history of the species. If I had to guess, I would say that is the most likely answer to why they have them.
from all the dragon types vids i like the Silver one the most as those types of dragon are my most favorite over all and learning more about them is alleys fun
thanks for this vid, it helps a lot with developing out a D&D character i came up with that's a draconic lineage sorcerer that's half elf/half gold dragon
As far as the leader thing...I thought the gold dragons ultimately answered to bahamut.. the 7 great gold wyrms that are his closest servants and accompany him disguised as canaries when he walks the earth..idk i guess that got retconned maybe but it was a cool concept
Please keep them coming. Fantastic work again on this video sir.
I used to play d&d along time ago, and your analysis of this RPG is great!
Golds are my favorite of those you have so far covered. In fact I came up with a scenario for including one in a campaign without telling the PCs that is what they are..
