Just finished the Silent Hill 2 remake last night, absolutely fantastic. Played on max settings, 4k with Bose noise cancelling headphones on full blast and the lights in my room turned off. This wasn't an issue on the PC version, but due to hardware limitations with the PS2, they went with this method where, instead of lighting up every individual pixel, it's lighting up every individual vertex. Less things to light up = less work done, which improves performance. To explain to those who don't know, 3D models are all built from polygons, or 2D shapes, the most basic of which being a triangle, which of course has three vertices.
Yes, exactly. Older games sometimes even had dynamic close to camera tessellation to increase the tri count. This would have the effect of increasing the resolution of the per vertex lighting.

I miss when you use to compare competing games like assassin creed odyssey vs red dead 2 or valhalla vs witcher 3. Great comparisons! I loved the OG, but they vastly improved everything in the remake. I just finished it a couple days ago, but this makes me want to play it again.
Feels nice to be one of those who played the og back in the day, through the years and be blessed with an actually good remake with real effort put in to it,if instead of rushing through the game like any other resident evil and you actually take your time to explore and enjoy the atmosphere and enviroments you can appreciate all the details and care put in to it. Both are amazing on their own and also have flaws of their own,i like both of them equally (shocking!),i really wish fake self proclaimed fans stopped shitting on the remake just for the sake of it,even the original staff complimented the remake. Its a *remake* not a direct 1:1 copy, pretty sure if it was the same "fans" would complain that its just a copy and paste instead of actually trying to do something distinct,if they want to play the original, then they should play the original. (As long as its not the HD collection ,that shit can burn in hell). We live in a time line where we can play 2 takes on a really good game and both are good, cry less and enjoy more, lifes too short to shit on things that dont really deserve that much shitting.
I still can not see the genius behind this game... whether in the original or in the remake. A murderer who can not take the consequences of his deed and has complexes. It is scary - no discussion but the sort of gameplay makes it boring: entering a building, investigating rooms and after finishing this - re-investigating the same building again. Original approx. 6-8 hours, remake 15 - 18 hours. To play it again only for a different ending? No thanks. Not enough goodies for a replay... SH3 is for me the better game.
From someone who spent hours and hours playing the original I can say the remake looks absolutely incredible. They have captured the environments and town so perfectly. The original was an absolute masterpiece and the remake looks even better.
With the up-res I’m finding that the 2001 original has held up amazingly well graphically. The remake was unforgettable in how lonely and oppressive the environment was even when interacting with the other characters. It felt like a real place, a really nightmarish purgatory.
Imo the remake is better as a video game, but the original is much better as a piece of art. Let's not kid ourselves, the original SH2 wasn't that mechanically interesting, it didn't even make very good use of it's camera like the other 3 games made by Team Silent, controls were perfectly ok for the time and that was it, enemies were rarely a threat and after a while facing the same enemies kinda made the horror aspect of the game lose a bit of it's effectiveness. But every single ARTISTIC choice made was genius, and made up to it's mediocre gameplay by a longshot, and this is the part the Remake fails to replicate most of the time. I liked the remake, it is a really good game, some changes were surely for the better and it's no wonder some members of the original Team came out to congratulate the Remake, but I think anyone out there who enjoyed the remake is doing themselves a diservice by not playing the original simply because there's so much Bloober Team failed to capture. And I also think fans of the original should give the remake a chance, it might not live up to the original overall, but there's some stuff in there that does improve upon the original experience (and I'm not talking about graphics either)
Agreed on many points here, especially the artistic part. As for the camera, on the contrary I really like the OG camera angles and different heights, there is definitely a big variation throughout the entire game and it works very well from a cinematic point. And of course, not being able to always see what's behind the corner is a HUGE part of Silent Hill, something the remake completely ditches in favor of modern gaming trends.
So I should buy the remake? Tbh I don’t play games for the art of it, I can be impressed by the story or the environments or the creativity, but I mostly play them for the fun
@@callmepsycho3132 If you are not sure, I suggest looking up some gameplay footage. You won't understand anything without context anyway in case there's an unexpected cutscene, and you can always skip it. Silent Hill 2 in its core is a very artistic game that was never meant for big audiences. It's a depressing experience with very mature themes and may very well not resonate with everyone. Also, not everyone will have the patience to study and fully grasp its symbolism, nuances and understand the art. Many aspects are open to interpretation so that kinda helps, but can be easy to over-analyze or disregard if you don't have abstract thinking. If you decide to do it, I suggest you play both the remake and the original game.
@@callmepsycho3132 What exactly do you consider a fun gaming experience? Silent Hill 2 is a psychological survival horror, if getting scared, solving puzzles, managing resources (ammo, health items) and piecing together a mysterious story sounds fun to you, then I'd say go for it. Tho as stated by someone else, Silent Hill 2 isn't necessarily about fun and engaging gameplay, neither versions have bad gameplay mind you, it's just not particularly engaging either since mechanical depth has never been the focus of those games. If you're looking for a modern survival horror experience that also has traditionally fun gameplay I'd say pick one of the modern Resident Evil games, but Silent Hill 2's story is worth it even if you don't play games for story and atmosphere. Also, the game's ending can be affected by the way you play the game, I'm not gonna give away how the game's ending is determined since that could influence the way you approach the game, but it's like you're always being observed and judged in your every action, so while it's mechanics are simple, the way you engage with them is crucial to what ending you're likely to get, so it's still mechanically innovative, you just won't realize it XD
Just turn on the noise effect in enhanced edition. I hate that they have it off by default when the game originaly had ir On always. Is a big part of the athmosphere
The Dead Space Remake should've taken more chances. Instead it tried to make the original obsolete. Meanwhile, RE Remakes and Silent Hill 2 Remake overhauled gameplay mechanics, boss fights, and enemy behavior to the point that better graphics wasn't their only selling point.
thank you so much for this video nick, i guess we both know ive been really looking forward for this one. If i may ask, do u think this had the same effect on sh2 fans and gamers as resident evil 2 remake had?

Hi Nick930 cream of the crop work as always :) When you do a direct comparison of the same game pc vs console which platform has the better graphics most of the time?
PC, without question. It has more headroom for more advanced effects and superior performance across the board. It's not really a competition, though. PC costs substantially more than console gaming at this level.
What is lacking to me is the more tastefully dramatic lighting in certain scenes (like when Maria is sitting behind the prison bars with her eyes obscured by shadow in the original game) and Angela doesn't seem as aptly malnourished as in the original. I also think the soundscape of the original was far more eerie, atmospheric and unique.
They darkened everything to hide the bad graphics. It's lazy work. The original game had unique graphics. Every room you entered were rich in details, like the prison for example, where each bar cage was visibally rusty and decaying in very fine detail. This is missing from the demake, instead they just made everything dark so that you can barely see the bars and cages. This is lazy work in comparison to the Resident Evil 1 remake, which made the game darker than the original but still prioritized in good lighting and graphics where you can still see all the fine details. The darkness is more subtle.
@@differentsame9402 this is straight up hating on the game XD I find the graphics of the remake to be pretty good, and the environments pretty rich with detail too.
Hi Nick930, I never got to tell you this but you’re Prince Of Persia documentary is awesome, I’m probably gonna ask you this after every documentary you released so, what could be next for your direct comparisons and documentaries? Will Silent Hill or Twisted Metal be next? Will you do a Horizon Zero Dawn comparison with the remastered & PS4 version? What do you think?
The original had a slightly different vibe because it was just generally weird... like the voice acting. The remake on PC is incredible, especially the sound design with headphones. I actually really like the new combat system too. It's difficult, but feels balanced and satisfying.
I find the remake very middle of the road. Obviously tech advancements allowed for much better graphical fidelity and sound design and they did add some things that were genuenly awesome (James and Maria moment in the bar is perfect). Over the shoulder view is pretty much a modern requirement but they did do a good job with it and combat in general. On the other hand, the remake is severely bloated in the worst way possible and even features combat rooms of all things. I also find they totally botched Maria and Angela - it's not how they look, and I wouldn't blame the voice actors, it's just that the direction is weird. Maria has this almost monotone and ethereal delivery, even when she should be intense or scary. "Im not your Mary" is almost comical now. Angela suffers from a similar problem, albeit in a different direction. Still, I expected far worse. It's not bad for someone who finds the original too dated to play and experience SH. But I still prefer the original.
I played the OG back in the day and I'm about to finish the remake. Pretty good to be honest. My only complain is that it feels a little too long. A little more condensed would have been nice.
A remake is nice to have for players who need it. The original remains unmatched though. It is very easy to take preexisting ideas and concepts and just plaster better graphics with today's ridiculous modern technology. It is very difficult to come up with original ideas and build an entire experience from the ground up which is why the modern game industry is so stagnant.
I agree thats a good way to express it maybe they got away with this one but how many times can you homogenize an older game until it gets old? Ill say pretty quickly
@@awake7586 I'm glad you think so. This remake era has gone on for too long. The industry desperately needs new original games / IPs, unfortunately they're playing it safe, what's safe for business is always a detriment to art.

As much as I love OG SH2. SH2Remake surpassed my expectations . Its the best SH game for me. Visually and also when it comes to sounds and overall vibe. Im also so happy someone finally addressed voice acting in SH2 it was always bad, now its really really good. I also now prefer models of characters. Before I was thinking they looking not as good as OG but i totally changed my mind. Maria Angela James... all looks WAYYY better.
As amazing these new graphics look, playing the remake revealed that it does not quite capture the atmosphere and horror of the original. The limited graphics and possibilities from back then have it an even more "liminal spaces" feel. Also the soundtrack of the remake is greatly inferior to the original.
There are a FEW things I like better than the original. While most of the voice acting was pretty cheesy and aged poorly, some lines are delivered absolutely perfectly and the remake failed to capture that energy. Some lines that come to mind are Maria's lines behind bars. "I'm not your Mary" and "It doesn't matter who I am. I'm here for you, James. See? I'm real?" Just feel so much more unsettling in the original. I also like the original's use of lighting more and its more in your face portrayal of Pyramid Head and what he symbolizes. The remake kinda pulled back a bit. But other than that, I thought the remake did almost everything else either as well or better than the original.
I adore the remake and its incredible but every room in the original game was unique. Each room was carefully designed by hand and do not blend together at all. It was especially supported by the lighting and camera angles.

I hope that Bloober Team’s recent win isn’t a fluke and that they’ve actually learned stuff from developing it. They stated previously that they are done making shitty games. I just hope they know what makes their previous games so shitty and avoid it next time.
I've always loved the SH games but SH2 was the only one I've never played up until a few years ago. Didn't really see what all the fuss was about, I wish I played it in the early 2000's because by the time I got around to it, it felt so insanely outdated. I WANTED to love it, but the remake was everything I hoped it'd be, and is now my favorite horror game of all time.
I really cant understand what you mean by outdated. Games are not the latest iPhone that needs to be replaced with a better one Art is timeless I think you might be too used to playing third person games so fixed camera angles are definitely gonna seem weird to you but as fan of the franchise you are missing out but not opening your mind to diferent play styles and game mechanics For example a lot of People dont know that the flashlight makes enemies walk toward you faster and that you can finish them up by pressing X without aiming. You can press L2 to move the camera You can do a sidestep dodge by pressing R1 or L1 and square at the same time And there is more deatails like this that you have to figure out for yourself otherwise the game could become akward to play
It is an excellent Remake. Great job the by Bloober team devs. The game plays very well. There are some micro stutters on PC. may be some future patch will fix them.
The game hard crashed my PC three times within the first hour and the only thing that fixed it was switching to DX11. The most recent update and AMD graphics driver mitigated the crashes and fixed some of the stuttering in the starting areas, but it’ll still occasionally crash and the later areas still stutter like crazy for me. I’m playing this on an AMD 6950XT, a Ryzen 7 5800x3D and 32 GB of 3600 MHz of RAM, so I feel like the performance shouldn’t have been as bad as it’s been for me. I would’ve refunded it, but the game itself was just too amazing to miss. I could see this turning some people away though, and I rarely see reviewers point this out in their reviews so I might just be in the minority. It could also just be UE5 jank.
@@kakokapolei123 I am playing with AMD card too. 7900XTX with 5950x cpu. Didnt have any crash at all. Stutters are there but they are negligible. As PC hardware is vast end extensive I suspect it has to do with combination of other system drivers .
Scenes like when you meet her and when she’s behind bars in the remake disprove this. She retains her seductive nature while still acting suspicious and tempting towards James.
@@mister-pinkman It doesn't disprove it. Maria in Remake has indeed been "nerfed", she shows much more vulnerability and is generally less playful and mysterious / malevolent.
@@mister-pinkman That scene shows way too much and was hugely unnecessary. Her talking so much and deliberately asking for James' attention is the exact opposite of what made Maria a mysterious character. She is too approachable, whereas OG Maria was a huge tease and always had that "you can't have me" aspect reflected in her character. She would never reveal her cards. The Remake is full of dialogues like this.
@ That’s fine, I don’t agree I think it shows James alcoholism really subtlety, the way she pours the drinks and James’ performance is amazing in that scene, you can tell just by his body language that he’s tempted to drink. That’s something the remake does very well that the original couldn’t do. Facial expressions and body language are a core part of acting and expression and Bloober took advantage of it wonderfully imo.

Intentional or not, it worked on the OG esp. with James' narrative. There is something really unique about how Guy Cihi delivers his role although Luke Roberts did better on showing raw emotions. I bet Konami succeeded this time to ensure Guy Cihi will be overshadowed.
2:36 We see this a lot with our older classics. Oftentimes people will credit technical/development limitations as "intentional" when more often than not, certain things were that way because they were working within the limitations of the engine or hardware, or it was just how things were made and they didn't have the knowledge, budget, or time to innovate as much as they would have liked to. And I understand how all of that can add to the experience and texture of how it feels to play a game, or sometimes those limitations create "happy accidents", like how the uncanny valley graphics of SH2 combined with the awkward voice acting creates an unsettling tone... And while we took to it, it does not mean that's how the devs would have wanted it if they could have done more/better. Another great example is the combat... Yes, it being kind of rigid, restrictive, and janky helps to add tension to combat encounters, but very few devs want to make mechanics and systems INTENTIONALLY cumbersome to create some kind of meta-horror... it was just the best combat they could have done with the time limit they had, with the engine they were using, that didn't make the game too actiony. I always find it funny how people are like *_"The combat is admittedly better... But it's not SUPPOSED to be kinetic and engaging. He's just supposed to be a regular guy",_* like a "regular" person wouldn't try to dodge a big telegraphed swing to their dome.
Exactly this, James still is a regular person, but as a regular person, we always try to dogde things that are throw in our direction, is just reflex, and people talks like is impossible for James to do a basic human action when facing danger.
Exactly. I'm a huge SH1-4 fan, but I can readily admit they had their own unique faults/issues. It's also correct that a lot of game devs/designers rarely want to have system limitations that must be worked around. Look through Hideo Kojima's design docs that you can find online sometime. MGS2, for example, showed he had wild ambitions that the hardware simply couldn't meet, and had to pull back. Granted, as suggested, this can have the effect of a happy accident, whereby forced limitations narrow a designers ambitions into something more streamlined... but it can also have the effect of stifling their actual intentions, not adding to their intentions.
Sure but in the end, i dont really care what the reason is. I care about the result, and for me, the originals unique style also with voice acting, is another win over the remake and all other horror games.
I hate the fact that the gameplay is now basically RE. Silent hill is not an action game focused o killing, action was complementary not a main theme They basically butcheted what made the original a masterpiece and turn it into a mediocre 3rd person game with a great story and over extended lenght so it becomes tedious and its actually not the same experience at all Overral its a demake for me ill stick to the original. Also whoever wants to play the OG but cant. You can now emulate Ps2 on android using NetherSx2
Have you even played the Remake? Where the Original remains as a masterpiece, the Remake is stellar at staying true to Silent Hill while simply adding more to the experience. Don't just stick to hate if you don't want to play and haven't played the Remake.

This is because the game used "per vertex" lighting, rather than "per pixel" lighting.

@ I mean i should probably elaborate, I played silent hill with my dad, I doubt I’d ever had the courage to face the pyramid head myself.
Ever.
@@OnceANoob1408 Pretty crazy for your dad to make you play Silent Hill at such an age.
@@javiervasquez625 Well, the ps2 was my first console, so whenever we passed by anything like a GameStop, I forced my dad to buy a new game for me and being the ‘cool dad’ that he was back then he always did.
Besides silent hill I also played gta San Andreas, persona 3, god of war, vice city, resident evil and countless other games I coaxed my dad to buy for me, so it made sense every weekend he’d sit by me watching me play and getting past the sections I couldn’t, those early days are what caused my love for gaming today
@@OnceANoob1408 Wow, your parents must have been very open minded to allow a young boy to play all those pg-18 games at such an age. Hopefully, neither they or you came to regret it.
You should definitely do a comparison of The Thing game once the remaster comes out.
if i can defend the use of 3rd person camera, i would say its in fact much scarier against mannequins as you dont see them if theyre behind a wall you cant see. audio is also a massive point that i wanted to discuss, as the 3D audio that comes with a 3rd person camera was used perfectly, with ambient sounds going from your right ear to your left one as you turn around, as well as other monster related and easter egg noises, it all just works so well
I miss when you use to compare competing games like assassin creed odyssey vs red dead 2 or valhalla vs witcher 3. These are great and a good way to show how much gaming has evolved but those early comparisons were special since you can see two heavyweight games go head to head. No one does it quite like you Nick
I have been waiting for one of these😂 thank you Nick and keep it up!
Both are great games. The devs did a great job on a modern remake.
Great video as always.
Could you also do a comparison between RDR 1 (original) VS RDR 1 PC?
I loved all the little nods to the original or things that were removed. I found the infamous horseshoe + wax puzzle in the prison last night.
Some music effects have been cut off and also I noticed enemies don't make that painful scream when being hit by James.
Pls make a comparison video comparing Black ops 6 with Modern Warfare 2019
I really appreciate your videos
Great work keep it up!
Always supporting my man.
no algorithm, no nothing recommended me this video, I just googled comparison and vuola, Nick with a day old video, fantastic! I watched your comparisons before gg
Great comparisons! I loved the OG, but they vastly improved everything in the remake. I just finished it a couple days ago, but this makes me want to play it again.
It's a sad that I didn't know the original earlier
I think the game was very much of its time ie it was crafted around the hardware. Rather than today where it's not.
Glad u are back nick, i missed your videos
SH3 is for me the better game.
brother, it has so much genius, its so rich with details and sympolism...
From someone who spent hours and hours playing the original I can say the remake looks absolutely incredible. They have captured the environments and town so perfectly. The original was an absolute masterpiece and the remake looks even better.
The biggest flaw for me is Maria/marys performance. Just doesn’t hold a candle to the original. Totally misses the mark for me emotionally.
@@callmepsycho3132
What exactly do you consider a fun gaming experience?
This is a great take I agree
What a masterpiece game and we can enjoy with 2024 graphics not ancient graphics
OG may have its flaws but is untouchable. To this day RE1 is the best remake and no dev team seems to follow those footsteps.
Re2?

Hi Nick930 cream of the crop work as always :) When you do a direct comparison of the same game pc vs console which platform has the better graphics most of the time?
PC, without question. It has more headroom for more advanced effects and superior performance across the board.
It's not really a competition, though. PC costs substantially more than console gaming at this level.
I think its a shame that remaster cutscenes felt much shorter
But they're longer...
What is lacking to me is the more tastefully dramatic lighting in certain scenes (like when Maria is sitting behind the prison bars with her eyes obscured by shadow in the original game) and Angela doesn't seem as aptly malnourished as in the original. I also think the soundscape of the original was far more eerie, atmospheric and unique.
im glad gameplay and graphics are much much better 😂😂
They darkened everything to hide the bad graphics. It's lazy work. The original game had unique graphics. Every room you entered were rich in details, like the prison for example, where each bar cage was visibally rusty and decaying in very fine detail. This is missing from the demake, instead they just made everything dark so that you can barely see the bars and cages. This is lazy work in comparison to the Resident Evil 1 remake, which made the game darker than the original but still prioritized in good lighting and graphics where you can still see all the fine details. The darkness is more subtle.
@@differentsame9402you can just point your flashlight and see the details of the room right? Bad graphics aren't a word used to describe it.
@@differentsame9402 this is straight up hating on the game XD
I find the graphics of the remake to be pretty good, and the environments pretty rich with detail too.

Piece of art, both♥
The original had a slightly different vibe because it was just generally weird... like the voice acting. The remake on PC is incredible, especially the sound design with headphones. I actually really like the new combat system too. It's difficult, but feels balanced and satisfying.
Wish you had released Tekken 7 vs Tekken 8 comparison...
Too bad they didn't remake the first game first
I find the remake very middle of the road.
The new voice acting is a HUGE improvement. Alot of the delivery in the old voice acting is pretty cringey. LOOOSSSSTTT??????
@@VergilHiltsLT yeah for real, the argument that older games are dated is like some sort of propaganda to get this new remakes all over the place, following that lógic this new remakes are also gonna get outaded and we are going to have the remake of the remake in 10 years 😂

The remake is almost perfect, what would make it perfect for me would be adding the classic camera as an accessibility option
Where’s our history of silent hill series video? 😢 I miss your history of documentaries I binged them all now I require more!
I just released a 4 hour documentary on prince of persia..........
@ well then…I know what I’m doing next time I go potty! 👍
I adore the remake and its incredible but every room in the original game was unique.
Each room was carefully designed by hand and do not blend together at all. It was especially supported by the lighting and camera angles.
I can't help myself but for me those remakes just aren't as scary as the originals - because my mind does not have to fill in the blanks.
Dear Nick, will you be doing a direct comparison off Black Ops 6?
Im not gonna lie who needs remakes when all 360/ps3 era games looks great on pc.

Games are not the latest iPhone that needs to be replaced with a better one
Art is timeless
I think you might be too used to playing third person games so fixed camera angles are definitely gonna seem weird to you but as fan of the franchise you are missing out but not opening your mind to diferent play styles and game mechanics
For example a lot of People dont know that the flashlight makes enemies walk toward you faster and that you can finish them up by pressing X without aiming.
You can press L2 to move the camera
You can do a sidestep dodge by pressing R1 or L1 and square at the same time
And there is more deatails like this that you have to figure out for yourself otherwise the game could become akward to play
A little surprised you didn't also include the Xbox 360 and PS3 remaster, even if it wasn't that great.
They were not even good they sucked
i loved this game i hope we will get dino crisis remake one day
Can you do a direct comparison of “Life is Strange” and “Life is Strange: Double Exposure”
The controls are still terrible. That being said, I love this game!
could you do cold war vs BO6?
Sure
Maria in OG was way more mysterious and terrifying as she should be. In the remake she seems to be generic and more human. No mystery whatsoever
@ she has new scenes where she acts exactly like that, particularly the strip joint scene
James’ forehead is too damn small in the remake! Nobody ever mentions this! Man’s got a threehead!

People hate it when other people enjoy a remake better than the original. Just check the reply section on that comment that said both the original and remake is a masterpiece. People are seething 😂
Intentional or not, it worked on the OG esp. with James' narrative. There is something really unique about how Guy Cihi delivers his role although Luke Roberts did better on showing raw emotions. I bet Konami succeeded this time to ensure Guy Cihi will be overshadowed.
Too bad they made James look like Leon's older brother!
Nick we need Horizon zero dawn vs horizon zero dawn remastered comparison!!!
“Generic looking face”……. Is James a Generic White Male!?
The best remake I've ever seen
I still feel the new voice for Angela is the worst, it feels lazy and emotionless
I hate the fact that the gameplay is now basically RE. Silent hill is not an action game focused o killing, action was complementary not a main theme
They basically butcheted what made the original a masterpiece and turn it into a mediocre 3rd person game with a great story and over extended lenght so it becomes tedious and its actually not the same experience at all
Overral its a demake for me
ill stick to the original.
Also whoever wants to play the OG but cant. You can now emulate Ps2 on android using NetherSx2
This is such a bad take
Have you even played the Remake? Where the Original remains as a masterpiece, the Remake is stellar at staying true to Silent Hill while simply adding more to the experience.
