You hit so many points on the head, it's nuts. Its almost hard where to start. I really liked this guy in high school. He was one of the few people who always respected my boundaries and always created whatever space I needed. The draw was very mutual. He was using really heavily at the time, but when we'd hang out, he'd want to be sober. He had got clean, we started hanging out more, then I ran. He looked at me like I was precious, and I didn't want him to see my trauma and not look at me like that anymore. (Being with him felt really good, but it felt dirty because of my own issues.) I pretty much ghosted him. He quickly got a new girlfriend, and I wasn't interested in competing, so I never chased. He and I were not good for each other at that time, he used, I was starting to use, and I had a lot of trauma I wasn't willing to acknowledge.
It was weird, because for years after, I'd have these really intense dreams with him...and sometimes they were super personal. (I'd see fights, drama, and sometimes happiness from the perspective of a fly on the wall.) It made me feel really weird, because I really didn't want anything to do with him. We were both in other relationships, in different states, and I didn't typically think of him much. We'd both married different people,l. I ended up having a daughter with my ex.
Fast forward to 17 years later, his brother came in town and wanted me to meet up with them. As soon as I saw my guy, he locked on and not long after was like, "I always felt like we had something, but you just disappeared." We talked, and it was crazy because he still looked at me like he used to--like I was precious. I'm more comfortable with my trauma now, so I shared some of it, and it hasn't changed the way he looked at me. We've been together for a year and a half now, and it's crazy how healthy this is.
The crazy thing is, he shared that he'd relapsed years prior, and when he was drying out, he'd regularly hallucinate I was with him...and that even though we hadn't talked for years, he'd randomly have dreams about me too. He's not someone who believes in the spiritual/supernatural stuff, so he's admitted that our connection has confused him a lot.

Usually I take all tarot readings with a pinch of salt because they’re so general but the energy check in pile 3 was exactly my situation down to his favourite colour and my zodiac sign! I was in pile one and what I thought was so interesting is that I compose music for the piano, and I composed a piece for both of us that I titled The Dolphin and the Mermaid. He is my dolphin and he sees me as his siren or mermaid. So, interestingly in how I view him the dolphin was the first card. So thank you for that confirmation. He has often told me I turned his world upside down in the best way. He is not the same person he was and he has grown and evolved so much in all respects. He was always amazing, but he tells me I accept him and allow and support his dreams and his true self that he has never experienced.

I chose pile 1 and am a Libra sun, Aries rising, Virgo moon, Scorpio Venus, and Leo north node. I am also a tiger in Chinese astrology. Although I am a very nurturing, compassionate, and passionate person, I evidently give off a pretty strong energy because I’ve had several people who I’ve become friends with said they found me intimidating until they got to know me. It’s so interesting that you identified characteristics that I believe I possess after I wrote the above. I am very eclectic and broad; fierce and gentle. I have both sides. Maybe it comes from having all elements in my 4 top energies. He is a Scorpio, I don’t know his other aspects. But he is a supervisor and we met at work. Dolphin is my number 1 Spirit animal ever since I was very young. I had a very deep knowing of him from the first time that our eyes met at work. It was something that I’d never experienced before. Our inner children are so happy when we’re in person. We are both intuitive and we communicate telepathically and intuitively. I am spiritual. He is not. So yes, he was very overwhelmed early on in our relationship and he ran. I’ve always seen into him and know that he is a healer. Lol He does have a very slimy mother who is narcissistic and has been demeaning and abusive to him all of his life. He comes from a Southern Baptist family that he’s been questioning. He protects and takes care of his whole family. This exhausts him and leaves very little time for himself and us. His family, being very conservative Christian; and me not being that at all- they do not like me and his mother has demanded that he not see me. Of course he does, but I intuitively believe he’s sneaking around and hiding this from her. She’s 88 and not in great health so I think he thinks this won’t be for long. This pile resonates so much. I don’t have any particular success - I do have two grad degrees which was a huge accomplishment, but I left teaching because I didn’t fit into the educational culture. Now I work manufacturing like Scorpio. He has said several times that he doesn’t deserve me, have anything to offer, and that I could do much better. He’s wrong. Pile 3 was so accurate and told me a lot of the same things I’ve heard before; he’s scared of his feelings, super logical and if we were to get together we would have a lot of difficulties (we are total opposite sister signs, from different countries and cultures, work together etc). And I am a big distraction to him from his college work so it’s easier to run away. I know all of this already but sometimes I check in on this connection just for fun.
But one thing I didn’t think about was you said he was scared of being a rebound for me. When we met I was engaged to somebody else and that didn’t work out (it had been a bad relationship for a long time). I confessed my feelings about 4 months after my break up and I didn’t think anything of it because I had been ready to leave that relationship for a long time (and even had a crush on the guy in the reading before my break up). But of course he doesn’t know all of that! No wonder he’s running scared 😂 I probably sound like an idiot because that should have been obvious to me but I’ve been over my ex for so long it didn’t register lol
Anyway long story short you brought some clarity to my situation and now it makes even more sense why he’s running haha, we’ll see if he ever comes back but if not lesson learnt!
