Memories David?..you probably mean thoughts..in the 60s there were wars, if not real ones then 'cold war' ones. Relatively (statistically) the world has never before been as peaceful as it is now. That said, it is doubtful if that trend will continue forever...

To think she was only 15 here, what a great voice and song. So mature for her age, I think she grew into her voice as she got older. She sang so many wonderful iconic songs which I still love to listen to.
hi rose, would you happen to have any to recommend i’ve found a record of Shapiros in a bargain store and would really love to further listen to her. Eager to continue :)
I just discovered a few years ago. She is nw 77 years old and very attractive with a wonderful voice. She is a Messianic Jew and her testimony from 1990 is on You Tube. She is, in my opinion, the cat's meow!
Helen was a true talent with a vocal maturity quite rare for someone so young,I have a CD of her and the songs show just how accomplished she is as a vocalist
So true, Bryan. The song is pure drivel, IMÒ, but her delivery is rock solid and she embellishes the Iines with all the panache of a singer twice her age. I know nothing about her -- I hope she went on to a great career and a happy life!
She was 15 when she recorded this she is still alive a true east end girl being a Londoner meself I always thought she was a yank. Fabulous song remind of my late parents singing and dancing.
I met Helen About 15 years ago at a conference in Harrisburg Pa. What an awesome voice and personality. You just have to hear her singing live. What a strong voice. Better than any other female singers in America for sure!!!!!
Helen Shapiro was younger than all the members of the Beatles from Liverpool and The Animals from Newcastle put together and yet her fame gradually dwindled down when the Beatles got into fame in 1963.
A long time ago back when I was a kid of 11 I was at the Cinema with my family and the pre-movie was a documentary about Helen Shapiro making this track and her fist performance of it..wow..I loved her then, now I'm still thinking wow..she had a great deep voice..a real talent..weren't those days fun!

@@maldywilliams973 I’m 71 remember this song great times. I guess your girlfriends parents were justified in their concern. How did things go? I’m lucky met my girlfriend when she was 15, still married and happy and blessed. Hope things worked out for you.
Because Americans were so racist bsck then! She's got African blood...only straightened hair & Fair in complexion. Although all African entertainers from the turn of the 20th Century were extrsordinary & influenced many musical trends back then!
@@samray3297 That's crap. Her songs simply weren't as high quality as those of Petula and Dusty. As for racism, Americans were embracing Aretha, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald, so nice try.
Petula and Dusty were fine performers, My opinion is that Helen was in their class as a singer and performer. Her voice was unique. Perhaps her management did not know how, or did not make an effort to promote her in America.
I remember her from my youth. Popular for a very short time only. Often wondered why. She seemed to dissappear soon afterwards never to be seen again. Beautiful voice from a girl of humble origins. Anybody know more?

With a surprisingly low voice and the composure of an R&B singer many years older, Helen Shapiro toured with The Beatles as support in 1963;(The Beatles' first national tour of Britain), her vocals inspired Lennon and McCartney to compose for her the song “Misery” (which they intended for her vocal style); (However her music management turned the song down) .She wrote her own B-sides; starred in ("A Hard Day's Night" director Richard Lester's) 1962 movie; and recorded an album of songs in Nashville with (Patsy Cline producer) Owen Bradley. All before her 17th birthday. Indeed Shapiro's working-class Cockney (London)upbringing, lacquered beehive, and Jewish heritage do invite perhaps too easy comparison to Amy Winehouse , were it not for 1963 , a year of missed opportunities in the changed pop climate that followed Beatlemania , Amy Winehouse might be more commonly compared to Helen Shapiro.
@Jibbie49 ...she began her career at age 14. She is still considered one of the best if not the best British singer ever. The Beatles were Helen's opening act. I love her girl pop years, however; her albums from the 80's where she finally got to record the jazz and blues standards are perhaps her best work. Stay on Piggie58's channel and SirBasildeBrush. Please listen to Helen's Nashville cuts: "Young Stranger," and "You'd Think He Didn't Know Me," Helen's "You Don't Know," by Piggie58
Helen Shapiro looks older than 14 and 15 in that picture above. She looks two years older. As for the Beatles being Helen Shapiro's opening act, Helen began her singing career two years before the Beatles from Liverpool.

Best of British.
Like Brenda Lee, she had a voice well ahead of her years. My all-time favourite Shapiro number is _You Don't Know._
No autotune And NOT a wrecking ball in sight.
Best singer ever! Period. Full Stop!!!!!!
Pop, Jazz, Gospal, she excells at them all. Highly respected singer who stood the test of time.

I wholeheartedly agree. I very rarely buy music these days for that reason. As a kid, I used to buy 3 albums each pay.
Reading her bio as I watch ! So underrated and unseen in US , we missed a gem !
So glad to find out about Helen Shapiro, love her sound and presence, really like her song ‘Look Who it is’ that she did with the young Beatles
