  • Watch before you buy a Nikon 600mm F4 lens. What I would do before I bought this lens. To quote one of the great photographers of our generation, "Do we take portraits of people with super-telephoto lenses, no. Then why use a telephoto lens to take portraits of wildlife?", David Yarrow.

    So lets all take a photo of a Grizzly bear in a Zoo rather than in its natural environment - thanks, I will continue to use my 6oo f/4

      Hi Gary, Thank you for taking the time to comment. The 600mm Lens is a great purchase, it's just if you thinking of upgrading your gear or going on that once in lifetime trip to see grizzly bears than rather do the trip. But hey if you can do both then absolutely go for it.

    I respect your opinion but for me there is nothing better for Wildlife than a 600mm f/4. it’s faster by 1 stop what means ISO 6400 rather than ISO 12800 with f/5.6. and you much better can separate subject from background, in bird photography you cannot every time select the composition or distance, birds don’t act according to your direction or will. So no, the 500mm 5.6 is nice one but not for me.

    • @cmtravels
      @cmtravels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stefan1968ful, thank you for your comment. You are so right. I often see people out with big lenses and most often then not its the 600mm. But I have to say when I look at the images that are real eye catches with photographers like David Yarrow, his images are taken with a 50mm or even wide sometimes. If I had to suggest to someone should they buy the lens or spend the extra money on going to a private game reserve with the best guide where they can have the freedom to get images very close then I will always say spend the money on the experience. But your point is absolutely valid.

    I am downgrading from 800mm FL to 600mm FL (in my situation it's worth it as I got both of them 50% of the original price). It's about money if you can find the cheap used lens in your country :)

    People often says that current camera bodies have good enough ISO capabilities to take f5.6 maximum aperture lenses, but nobody talks about what happens to the camera AF capabilities with anything smaller than a F4 maximum aperture lens. Even my D5 takes a great hit in that regard and looses many cross AF points.
    I currently have a 500mm f4 G VR, and the next thing I will do when the circumstances allow me, is to switch it for a 600mm f4 FL.
    Happy pictures everyone!

    Thanks for the great vid. I’m 80% with you on the 500mm f5.6 but there’s still part of me that is considering a older model of the 600mm F4. Just getting that extra light and subject separation that you get with the F4 really has me on the fence. The first release of the 600mm f4 AF-S silent wave model (1996?)without VR can be had for slightly less now than a new 500mm f5.6. My thinking is that since the F4 lens is so heavy it’s going to always be on a tripod so I don’t really need the VR and the image quality and build of this model should be on par with the 500mm f5.6 and the latest versions of the f4. Do you have any experience with this older version of the 600mm f4? Thanks!

    • @cmtravels
      @cmtravels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dan B, thank you for your comment! Unfortunately I do not have any experience with the older lens. I think you spot on with the separation element as well as the light factors. For me the weight and quiet auto focus plus auto focus speed is amazing and is more for what I need. But if those things are further down your list then absolutely the older version would do just fine. 😊👍

    I currently use the 500PF lens as well as the D500 combo. I've been using this combo for quite some time and I would say it's always tough for us wildlife photographers to be happy with what we currently have because we always want something "better", but honestly location is extremely important for getting close enough to your subjects to capture that intimacy that draws attention to your photographs. I wanted the 600 F4 for so long, but after realizing that an extra 8-10 grand is gonna give me a slightly smoother background, some more range "which might be hard for close subjects" and a touch more light to work with is not worth that investment for something you can get the same quality with for a bit more efforts put into scoping out hotspots for wildlife in your area or just a little bit of luck. I also don't think putting endless wear your spinal chord is worth it in the long run of traveling with this monster of a lens over a course of several years. Just an eye opener for anyone stuck in the mindset that your gear can't do the job, because it can. Take a look at my photos and you can judge for yourself. Great video though! Cheers!

    • @cmtravels
      @cmtravels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      William thank you for your comment! Always interesting to hear the communities thoughts! The 500 PF is fantastic and as you say has some qualities that are better than the 600mm. I suppose my main objective is really point how important finding the right location and the importance of experiences in our lives. As we speak I have the 400mm F2.8 and 500mm F4 FL lenses in the office but they not giving me great experiences. The experiences and memories are the important aspect as much as the right gear to capture the image you are looking for and if you weighing up going on a trip or focusing on gear I will always say go the trip! Look forward to hearing more from you in the new videos!

  • @enricomarconi8358

    Thanks for the Video and I see you point. From where you stand it makes sense, but it boils down to priorities here. If one is 'all in' re image quality, separation, background blur and as much reach as possible and sharpness then he/she should opt for the 600 f/4 as this lens is true magic! If one has a tight budget and must consider travelling into the equation and handholding the lens (as opposed to a monopod or tripod) then a 500 PF F/5.6 should do. One stop of light when you shooting 1/2500 or eve 1/3200 isn't something that can be overlooked. Not everyone owns a D5 or D6 and APS-C cameras don't perform as well as FF cameras when it comes down to ISO. Ah I forgot, one more point to make (which is quite important and that's why people drop the big money on an f/4): whilst the 500 PF f/5.6 is a great light option to carry, it's all nice and good if 500 will do. If you need 700mm and you need to use a 1.4 TC then you'll be working at f8 and, if memory serves me right, this is where AF starts imposing you limitations (i.e. not all the AF points are available to you at that aperture). With the 600 f/4 (which is a 611mm by the way), if you use a 1.4 TC sets you back at an aperture of f/5.6 however ALL of your AF points are still available to you! Need extra reach? Attach the combo to a crop sensor D500 and you'll be at 1,283 mm (but still shooting at f/5.6 !! ). Apologies but this point was far too important to leave out... And of course, you'll be still be getting the top notch quality that comes with the heavy but marvellous 600mm f/4 Nikkor !!

    • @cmtravels
      @cmtravels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Enrico! Thank you for your comment! Yes, absolutely it has further reach and there is a very sweet spot at the F4. But it's hard to go all for it at 13 000 US. Whereas the 500 f5.6 is around 3500. The light is a big factor as well. I remember using it late in the twilight zone and just amazed at how much light it was still picking up. Look forward to seeing your comments in the next video!

      @@cmtravels I have to say though that photography, like driving, is also about the experience. Taking a shot with a dslr is a different experience than taking it with your cell phone and similarly with a pro lens and pro body compared to a consumer setup.

      Because your lens isn't terribly good in low light, isn't actually 600mm due to focus breathing, the optics are significantly worse than an EF 500mm f4 MK2/600mm MK2, your lens deteriorates in IQ with an extender, an expensive prime doesn't, the bokeh is far far nicer and the build quality is second to none.
      Think about it this way, in the morning at 8am, I have to use ISO 8,000 at f4, what are you shooting at to get the same exposure on your 6.3? Not to mention the significance of the difference in image quality as you bring up the MP, focus speed also, shutter speed.

    • @davetugwood1770
      @davetugwood1770 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What is your level of comfort shooting with the Sigma in the rain? (or most any zoom with external extension). I am sure it does not match the D500s ability to easily shed the rain. I think the Sigma is excellent value but it is a compromise in photo and build quality compared to the 600 which can mean the difference between staying home and getting out there in inclement weather. That said I do own the 600 and with a bad knee it is a big job wandering far from the parking lot with any more than that lens in tow where the Sigma would be more versatile and I would be able to handle longer excursions. I guess I need a lens caddy because i am not selling my 600! Excellent video btw CM Travels. Lots of valid points to consider.
