Anthony, you’re on point with BIG30’s cypher, he sounded great, but that’s literally what he sounds like in a lot of his studio material. I think you’re missing something there that you would like. His flow is always insane, he shifts the meter in ways that are really hard to replicate and almost always sounds as hungry as he does here. He just doesn’t let up. Give him another go

His new album is really good, he’s been rising in popularity, and he took advantage of the marketing tool that is the xxl freshman class by actually putting in the work and giving a good performance. He’s quickly proving that not every carti clone needs to be like Ken Carson, and there’s actual artistic viability beyond waiting to see what carti does next and then copying off of that
honestly cochise's freestyle just sounded like an above average cochise track to me. Ive listened to his whole discography and have really enjoyed the vast majority. His most recent album is pretty unique taking a more orchestral style on a few tracks. I also love his track "Day Dream".

I think Nardo Wick's cypher is heavily underrated. There were surprisingly witty lines, like "leave him neckless (necklace) if he try reachin for my chain", and "see his whip and fill it up with holes (hoes), you would think I'm pimpin." The lowkey energy best fits Nardo's style, but imo, he was pretty high energy for his standards and switched up the flow well. Shit went hard. Switch Nardo and Doechii cypher rankings and it's a fine list imo. Doechii had some extremely terrible lines that brought down the quality of her overall decent cypher verse, for example, the "in your mouth like a TV dana (dinner? tf?), V-E-gana (bruh)"

Emperor of the Universe single handedly proves that it's not about lack of beat versatility from tron. Cutting the beat is XXL giving a specific artist a spotlight, I think it has much more to do with favoritism than it does with an artist not being compatible with a beat. If you have an issue with cutting the beat I believe the blame lies a lot more on XXL than it does on any artist (except for maybe X since he popularized it and made the defacto style for the most anticipated cypher)
While I wouldn’t have put him at the bottom, I am increasingly frustrated year by year about people “cutting the beat” in the XXL cyphers. Tierra Whack is probably the only person who pulled it off well, but that’s just because she such a good freestyler and it was an amazing freestyle on its own so cutting the beat to emphasize the words actually made sense. X’s was at least novel since he was the first to do it, even if you don’t vibe with what the edginess so much, and Ski Mask could at least be said to be tributing his friend who’d died recently so there was a gravitas that fit even if his verse itself wasn’t amazing. But now every year somebody has to cut the beat to basically do what they could have and should have done over the beat as part of the cypher. Polo G is who comes to mind, as he was trying to be real and insightful in his verse, but it felt a bit self-aggrandizing for little payoff. Like, you’re implying what you’ve got to say is so good/real/important that it stands on its own and doesn’t need a beat behind it to distract from the words. So if you are doing it to basically just drop a regular freestyle that sounds like it would’ve been better served with the beat, it just doesn’t work. And that’s what Babytron’s verse felt here.

KenTheMan easily had the best Cypher verse, a minute and 20 seconds of punch line after punch line while never repeating the same pattern long enough to get boring. Doechii's was creative and fun, but overall lacked intensity and was lyrically weaker. I'd put Saucy in the 3 spot, BabyFace Ray and Big 30 in 4 and 5 respectively, but Kali's Cypher is heavily reminiscent of Rubi Rose's from last year and lacks an originality factor. I think I'd rank Nardo Wick's above hers on account of dynamics and lyrics, BabyTron next for at least trying something, Cochise gets safety from the bottom spot for actually freestyling, Big Scarr was just... terrible.

Cutting the beat was bad pretty much every time lol. Can you name an XXL cipher where they cut the beat and it was considered the best of that year? Not really... the cipher is for rapping over beats. The only thing worse than it is to not turn up for the cipher and/or freestyle at all

KenTheMan easily had the best Cypher verse, a minute and 20 seconds of punch line after punch line while never repeating the same pattern long enough to get boring. Doechii's was creative and fun, but overall lacked intensity and was lyrically weaker. I'd put Saucy in the 3 spot, BabyFace Ray and Big 30 in 4 and 5 respectively, but Kali's Cypher is heavily reminiscent of Rubi Rose's from last year and lacks an originality factor. I think I'd rank Nardo Wick's above hers on account of dynamics and lyrics, BabyTron next for at least trying something, Cochise gets safety from the bottom spot for actually freestyling, Big Scarr was just... terrible.
