    Born *Børge Rosenbaum* in Copenhagen, Denmark. Both his parents were musicians, and he learned to play the piano. He played his first major concert in 1926, but soon realised that he liked to put a comical spin on his act, and toured as a comical pianist in Europe in the 30s. When Denmark was occupied by Hitlers troops in 1940 he managed to escape to the states where he resettled.

    • @maryhill1925
      @maryhill1925 4 ปีที่แล้ว +105

      On a grand piano, you can play a note in the base and then put down the middle pedal. The middle pedal will sustain this note in isolation until the pedal is lifted. This is useful in composers like Debussy. The sustaining pedal on the right lifts the dampers off the keys so that the note just played carries on sounding (otherwise when you let go of a note the damper comes down and stops the string vibrating). The left pedal moves the hammers so that they only hit two out of the three strings and therefore the resulting sound is softer.

    • @u.v.s.5583
      @u.v.s.5583 4 ปีที่แล้ว +393

      @@maryhill1925 You explained all about the piano. Now I will explain to you the man. He is the other part of the same joke, you see. A man has a left leg and a right leg, which are the only parts of the man that touch the ground when the man plays the piano the correct way. He has two legs, and two legs only. Now, the piano has three pedals, which cannot be played at the same time using only two legs. Therefore, another part of the man should be able to operate the third pedal. Now, men have another body part that reaches from the center downwards. It is called the male penis. Only in men with exceptionally long penisses can the penis touch the middle pedal of the piano. So Mr. Borge is asking if the company that presents this Steinway piano really believe that he has this particular length of penis. And that is funny because all penis jokes are funny.

It is humor in it's purest form, proving you do not need sexual innuendo and smut to captivate an audience. He was one of the very few who could be funny without "picking "on others shortcomings, and a true family entertainer. Think for a moment, who else can entertain the whole family, aged from 5 to 100, without upsetting someone. For about 80 years Victor has done, not only his unique comedy, but he educated tens of thousands of people about classical music (just as Disney did in his own way). This would have been a new comedy genre today, recognized world wide, but I guess that since 1909 until today there was no person that could follow up his artistry (I do apologies in case that someone is doing this today, so please correct me if I'm wrong) or become his successor. This makes Mr Borge a one of a kind genius and artist who made the entire world laugh for something we've never seen before and we might never will again. That's how great he was.

      Search for Peter Schickele and his creation, PDQ Bach. I went to a concert of his in London 40yrs ago, along with my husband, a very knowledgeable music lover, and we laughed till we cried - as did the rest of the audience.

      Robin Williams was way over-rated and Steve Martin is quite the anti-comedian in my opinion, never heard anything funny from him.
      They're not anywhere close to a genius like Borge ...Martin could've played some banjo with him, I'll give you that.
      But what's the connection with Williams and music? Don't think I ever heard him play or sing anything.

      Is that some Disney movie?
      Well, even if I'd watch something like that I probably wouldn't have heard him cause they dub all that into German and they even translate the songs.
      For ten years or so I haven't watched anything German dubbed cause I can't stand it anymore but I guess it's older than that.
      Anyways, so he did sing in some movie, is that what you're saying?
      Update: I looked it up, yes he did it very well but I really don't like the style.
      But I can agree with you now, these three people together probably could've done some interesting musical comedy, I just don't like two of 'em.

    Probably the most famed danish comedian ever, but I never realized what impeccable timing he had. Reminds me a bit of Harpo and Chico, and to a lesser extent Groucho, all of whom had a immaculate musicality, as comedians as well as musicians. I guess Borges genius was evolving that sort of musical comedy and curating it into both 5 minute television segments as well as his hugely popular Broadway show. The Marx' antics worked best in movies and theaters where Borge here shows how brilliant he was on television
