Aristides de Sousa Mendes by his full name Aristides de Sousa Mendes do Amaral e Abranches(Cabanas, Carregal do Sal, 19 July 1885 - Mártires, Lisbon, 3 April 1954), was a Portuguese diplomat. As consul of Portugal in Bordeaux in the year of the invasion of France by Nazi Germany in the Second World War, he defied express orders from the dictator António de Oliveira Salazar, who held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs, and for three days and three nights granted thousands of visas entry into Portugal for refugees of various nationalities who wished to flee France in 1940.
