  • Soundtrack to the EverQuest expansion, Shadows of Luclin.
Yes, there really was music for this expansion! Evidently it was not included on the release of Shadows of Luclin until years later during the Time Locked Progression servers.

Thank you *so* much for posting this, and for your entire channel! I’ve been wishing for years that someone would do exactly this, and it looks like it’s been a labor of love, given how beautifully you’ve built each video.
The composer for Shadows of Luclin was Jay Barbeau, also the composer for the original Everquest (including the main theme song). For the intervening expansions, Ruins of Kunark famously had no music, while Sam Powell is credited as the composer for Scars of Velious. Expansions after Shadows of Luclin moved away from MIDI music.
Jay Barbeau was actually recently interviewed by former Everquest Lead Game Designer, Shawn Lord: th-cam.com/video/9XARJRpyBuY/w-d-xo.html . It’s a fairly extensive interview, with a lot of musical shop-talk lost on a non-musician like me, but some highlights I found interesting:
-Asked why Ruins of Kunark had no music, Jay didn’t give a very clear answer, but implied that the developers chose to prioritize the expansion’s timeline over including music, and he seemed to regret not pressing the issue with them more strongly at the time.
-Jay seemed unaware that the music he composed for Shadows of Luclin wasn’t actually present in the game on release. He said he remembered placing the objects in-game which were supposed to trigger the music for each area, and he and Shawn speculated some technical issue must have bugged it. It’s surprising to me that the issue wasn’t discovered until nearly 15 years later (March 16, 2016), but better late than never!
-When asked what his favorite track from the original game was, Jay said he was most proud of the main theme, but appreciated how strongly people feel about the Kelethin theme.

Awesome! Its great to hear stuff like this for a game that has had such an impact on many of us. For me, it was music that I could seemingly recall from nowhere in my head and it would bring me back to being a teenager, exploring something for the first time, or sitting at a camp with friends waiting for that rare named to spawn. The release of Luclin music epitomized the Timelocked Progression Servers for me as I spent a lot of idle time in the Nexus and Bazaar talking with friends or handing out buffs.

@@Reddhawk11 Yes! Music has such an amazing ability to transport you back in time. Having recently returned to the game after an 18 year hiatus, while I didn't specifically remember that Shadows of Luclin didn't have music back in the day, I knew something was weird when I went to the Bazaar for the first time, since I was *certain* I'd have remembered that tune. :p
