Watching car shows on TV is largely painful because they only ever bother with bolt-on modifications, which is always a shame. A willingness to hack up you car and various aftermarket components and fabricate from scratch really opens up the options from the mundane to the truly exotic. It's just a shame that most of the shops and shed tinkerers who have such skill and reckless abandon aren't nearly so capable of filming their projects and editing down the resultant video. I did find a slideshow video the other day of a guy in a shed shoving a BMW V10 engine with a Porsche transaxle into the back of a Lotus Exige, which necessitated widening the vehicle and lengthening it, building an entire new rear subframe, a roll cage and rear supporting cage, and some custom fiberglass work to stitch the original body back together. It was a truly insane build, almost on par with Binky in terms of how crazy they got. The only difference is that the majority of their fabrication was done with box section and tube in a sub-frame style instead of trying to build using a unibody construction. Since the vehicle is largely fiberglass in a body on connected subframe construction, it is forgivable, but it lacks the certain finesse that Binky has. Still, you can't argue with the finished product, which is truly a work of insane genius.
If anyone is sad that it takes so long to put out a new episode just remember... The Quality of this series is above and beyond anything you have or will see for free on youtube. They ain't a bunch of back yard yokels bolting on parts from a catalogue they are hand building one of the finest 4wd turboed mini's ever made! I think every episode is more than worth the wait!
+Dane Cook Yeah, i still want more. I know how long stuff like this takes more so if it has to stay together longer then the episode. This is the best "car channel" on youtube.
This show is amazing. Dry humour, hugely British, informative, entertaining, inspiring.... the list goes on. Can we get a public petition up to make the BBC aware of this and persuade them to persuade Bad Obsession to get on BBC2?
+Gideon Dixon I'd like this as long as they don't become pushy because they seem to enjoy taking their time, drinking tea, eating biscuits and thinking things through rather than rushing. It would open up the resources for them to be able to finish this quicker since I'm sure they both are working regular jobs on top of trying to get this finished.
+Carlton Dodd These guys are reading here - if you have any idea what they might do better you maybe can help them. btw: i dont think Nik ever finished Binky - when Binky do brumbrum noises from her own he would for sure find any issues ;-)
"Mr. Flibble will be very cross". Red Dwarf reference. I was unaware that it was possible for me to love this channel any more than i already did. Turns out it was. Go Binki!
this is so impressive. thanks for editing it long form and not speeding any thing up. well done. i can't wait for the next episode and even seeing the completed project. Once its done you should release one long video from start to finish. well done.
Finally got my Binky Fix ! ............ I started watching the series over again just see what I may have missed the first time around ................... Love this car ... Great Job .......
I laughed, I watched in awe, I drank copious amounts of tea over the last 27 odd minutes and then shed a tear when it came to the end. The most important show on youtube by far.
I Loved seeing you today at Good Wood Festival of Speed, Thanks for the signed mug! I now understand what you showed me in the boot. The fuel tank! Many Thanks Joe
Having followed this project through I am utterly amazed by the quality of the work and the ingenious jigs. It is a pleasure to see that real craftmanship still exists, this is going to be a superb little car.
So I am in America but was born and raised in England where I grew up from 10 months old watching rallying. My first car was a mini 1000 of the same year as yours. Same problems with the sills and the shell in general. We stripped it and bought another one. Stripped that and was given a race prepped shell with no front end from the bulk head forward. With connections in the rallying circles etc my dad and I were able to build up my first car and get it through an MOT and running. That was about 20 years ago now and watching you guys shoehorn this GT4 into this mini is bringing back so many memories of working with him on that project. A friend of mine tagged me in your video and I binge watched it all the way up to episode 11 last night and lucky for me episode 12 coming out today was perfect timing. Keep up the great work guys and although I will be without any good internet for the next six months (judging by the comments below I won't miss the next episode) I am seriously looking forward to the next time we see you guys working on this masterpiece. My question is though why is it called project Binky? What was the inspiration for the project name?
Come on episode 13! Craving some More of the binky build. This is one long tea and biscuit break.. Chop chop! Good work, can't wait for the next episode and to see the finished car!
Have been waiting so long for this episode and am still looking in amazement at the fabrication work being done. I can't wait for the next episode. Go for it gents. Australia is waiting!
Richard and Nick, got to say it was good to meet you at the Goodwood Festival of speed. A pair of top blokes!!! THANKS for the donation to the Richard Burns Foundation and the signed mug is in pride of place in my mancave :)
I have given up watching some great TV shows because I have had to wait a week for each episode, but somehow I am okay waiting around 4-6 months for each episode of this.
It STILL amazes me, years on now, that you guys managed to fit a 3" exhaust under that car with a forward resonator. I think the only thing I've seen that was more mad was watching a man in a shed in Australia weld a pair of high-flow catalytic converters under a pair 3.5" exhaust being run beneath a 300ZX TT, because apparently their smog regulations make no concessions for 25+ year old vehicles if they came from the factory with them. High-flow cats are absolutely massive, and while the 300ZX TT does have considerably more working space beneath the tunnel, it was still highly impressive. Given his willingness to fabricate components compared to the average gear-head on youtube, I suspect you would get along if ever either of you were to end up on the other side of the planet and met.
You two are the most advantageous and inspiring motor enthusiasts I have ever had the honor and privelage of watching. I am subscribed to dozens of car builders pages and NONE of them come close to having the incredibly precise, delicate, literally perfect know-how as well as execution as you two. I have been unexplainably excited to watch each episode you release every few months. Whenever I lose my drive to continue to pursue my similair passion of all things car, I see one of your videos and become inspired. I am just 21 years young and got a late start but I aspire to be like you two when I am older. Thank you for continuing the BEST car build known to man and although I haven't been around for too long and I may not have seen as many builds as others, I know that the amount of hard work and effort you put into every single aspect of your build makes you two the best and seperates you from the rest- not to put anyone else down. Keep it up, PLEASE!
Strongly suggest building a good heat shield for the center drive shaft bearing mount. I ran into that problem with my 95 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX was that the exhaust ran as close to the 2 piece driveshaft like the setup you guys are working. Even with the stock heat shield the center bearing mounting bushing would get hot and soft with the 3" exhaust and cause vibration after about 15 min of driving.
outstanding. it's amazing how outstanding how a select few youtubers can bring such content that the big production tv shows can't bring or even come close to.
+Bad Obsession Motorsport don't sell yourself short.. the amount of craftsman ship and quality in this build is superb. the thought process behind the statements (like someone planned it that way) always surprises me.
Congratulations on that exhaust and your new TIGz! Wow! Amazing work! :D Still totally jealous of the rotisserie. More so with every episode. :L It's just awesome!
Thanks, guys. A little pricey on this side of the pond at $38/can, but I think i'll try it. Leaves a beautiful finish, no? And thanks for the interesting and humorous videos! I can hardly wait for the new episodes. Kudos! Hank Auderer
OMG OMG, saw this video in my suggestions and immediately stopped doing everything. Screw exam revision! What's a degree in mathematics when Project Binky is here!!!!
I was watching the Binky saga from the very beginning, and I think it was episode 09 or 10 when I decided to have a look at your fine website, and to see what you have on offer. Happily, I was able to order one of your sticker packs to add them to my tool box which is covered in many company stickers. I think you will be seen on one of the lower box drawer fronts, mostly because I reserve those for the truly gifted. I started on Binky episode 01 earlier today, and I will probably go through a couple of others before bed. One of the great things about being a disabled Veteran is that your day is pretty much open and can spend a solid day watching vids here. I have to say you guys are amazing fabricators, truly craftsmen of your trade. Semper Fidelis my friends.I was hoping you could show the math on how a swallow might be able to carry a coconut.
The level of fabrication is next. Insane skills you guys own. I'm truly admiring your talent! Keep the episodes coming, and please, when the car is finished, we would like to see it in action on a rally stage for sure!
ste lamo How painful would that be waiting what seems like an eternity for every episode. Hopefully they will put us out of our misery soon and finish it.
Having now made my way through all of Project Binky to date (after first discovering episode 13), I am blown away by the fabrication, planning and... well... everything. I've spent the last couple of days trying to clean up a dismantled carburetor and it still looks very old and used. The kind of work you're doing to this car is stuff I can only dream of being able to do. The planning, measuring and figuring out is beyond me even before I think about my lack of practical skills. Do you suppose, that if you took on a janitor to sweep up all that grinder debris and redundant template materials, that some of your impressive knowledge and skills would permeate the air and enable said janitor to learn to do something of a similar quality? I can sort of operate a brush alright. Brilliant series. Truly impressive. Very entertaining and inspiring to watch.
What this series has taught me about what you guys have done, is how much work goes into designing a car. You basically built a car from scratch at this point and it's amazing. To be honest, I would love to see this level of detail in filming and walk through from some major automotive companies. Learning the step by step process in how some of our favorite cars are made and what goes into them. Would be interesting.
This is PURE AWSOME !! There are not many build videos out there that are of this quality ! you can just tell there has been a lot of thought and time put into this video. How there is any dislikes at all on this video is beyond me.
I should have already appreciated your talent when you introduced your jig in the first episode, but now I fully do so. Congratulations on your talent and craftsmanship
This was perfect, "Police Squad!" references, British humor, puppets, and a mini. Like those episodes of the proper Top Gear where they focused on them actually accomplishing things.
Seeing how easy you flip the car makes me want to cry, after i've spent couple of days on my back underneath my RWD conversion project Mockup the drive shaft, but rotating a complete car is not posible. Hurry up with ep13 i need motivation.
I was at a friend's house for dinner the other night and "the funk" came on. I don't think anyone has ever been so frustrated with my love of rally, engineering, and Minis. I would not shut up about Binky.
Considering the lack of space under the engine it suprises me you arent contemplating using a drysump instead of that big sump, that would also mean you could mount the engine a bit lower. Oiltank could sit in the rear and you could use an electric oilpump.
+Kristoffer Lilja You can't mount the engine lower because it's attached to the gearbox. As you can see in this video, the bottom of the gearbox is almost as low as the sump anyway.
+Kristoffer Lilja Definitely not the worst idea ever. I'm not sure how much lower the engine could go, however, even if there were clearance. Driveshaft/tailshaft joint angles etc might be a problem
Aaaahhh I love the smell of Project Binky in the morning. ..........Well that sounded better in my head. Once again another great job on the build as well as thoroughly keeping me entertained while the wife mows the lawn.
This is better than 99% of the bullshit on TV,
You guys are the best!
+SpaceManDawn Thank you!
It's true. I don't watch commercial t.v. anymore.

Would be interesting.
happy 32nd of Jalember 2045 everybody. i thought this day would never come
Omg 2days till episode 13..... Better get the tea bags and biscuits in ready. And just enough time to watch all the episodes again 😉
Never clicked on a video so fast!
That stainless exhaust is a thing of beauty. Congrats chaps, keep up the good work 👏👏👏
that welder is unlike any I've ever seen, so quiet!
This is PURE AWSOME !! There are not many build videos out there that are of this quality ! you can just tell there has been a lot of thought and time put into this video. How there is any dislikes at all on this video is beyond me.
Way back in episode #7, Richard mentioned that he hoped to put A/C in Binky. Vintageair.com might be able to help.
I should have already appreciated your talent when you introduced your jig in the first episode, but now I fully do so.
Congratulations on your talent and craftsmanship
I need to step up my bracket game!
You two are gods of backyard screwing around.
+Forest Davis Cheers!
if this series is done by 2020, I wan't a copy on blue ray.
+tyler “sarcastic” roberts It will be 64 k super high pulse drive in 2020 ;-p
+tyler “sarcastic” roberts Blueray would be gone i that year :P
Gert Andersen I'm still rocking DVD.
Next update will be in 2020 m8
+tyler “sarcastic” roberts We're still rocking VHS!
The commentary on these videos makes it a winner everytime for me. I love that jig too
Yes! At last!
That jig for cutting the pipe on the saw is freaking genius!!!!
+Boosted & Built Garage Dead simple, but effective.
this is art :')
Hurry up with ep13 i need motivation.
sounds good
I was at a friend's house for dinner the other night and "the funk" came on.
+Kristoffer Lilja We did consider that to be honest. Decided against it.
Aaaahhh I love the smell of Project Binky in the morning. ..........Well that sounded better in my head. Once again another great job on the build as well as thoroughly keeping me entertained while the wife mows the lawn.
And now back to checking in each month to see if BOM has left a comment about episode 13 .
+tony butcher It's coming, probably a little sooner than you'd think too.
Checking in. Cheers.
