There is one on here called "Life of Galileo" by Brecht that was made in 1975. Im trying to find others, but its hard to find, maybe they are under different titles and I just don't know what to search.
In my opinion, an already arrogant man with a knack for making enemies would have been far worse off knowing his legacy 375 some years after his death. his lack of respect for others got him in a lot of trouble throughout his life, I don't think boosting his self worth would have done anyone good. i read your statement, Agnostic. I was making a counter statement.
For the record, the bible doesn't promote a geocentric worldview. I think it's really easy to look at Galileo's trial as some sort of triumph of reason over religion. But Galileo was himself a committed Christian. He shared the theology of Pope Urban. We know now that Galileo was right, but at the time it seemed really improbable for his theories to be true based on the technology that was available to scientists at the time. Not to mention the political pressure on Pope Urban. Religion doesn't impede progress, Politics does. I truly feel bad for how Galileo's situation was handled, but he was a Christian and he studied astronomy and physics to serve God. His religion motivated him. Politics and corruption condemned Galileo to house arrest. Not religion. All that said, this video rocks and it makes me smile.
For the record The Bible promotes a flat erth in original. The historical fact is that the church banned his work on Heliocentric theory, he was at a church court and the church condemned him as heretic to life-long house arrest even after he renounced his theories to avoid burning.
These are amazing and can be used easily in classrooms - perhaps consider following the mandated school curriculum and adding in the interesting stuff many text books leave out?
Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer, physicist, mathematician, and philosopher. Galileo Galilei was mentioned in the opera section of the hit song of the English rock band Queen, "Bohemian Rhapsody."
Imagine where we would've been today had the Church not interfered with his work. 200 years of potentially exponential scientific progress halted in the name of God :/
@Brad Watson He wasn't the only scientist around at the time, and Papal authority didn't extend much beyond Italy and not at all into the Protestant states. Have you ever heard of Kepler and Newton?
He did. He "went" but he didn't stay. He was given a "tour" as the video says. Meaning he was threatened with torture and death if he did not relinquish his claim that the earth orbits the sun. Because Galileo Galilei chose to relinquish his discoveries, he avoided torture and the death penalty but was still punished with house arrest for the rest of his life.
yeah this video is over-simplifying and thus making it inaccurate. Stars and Galaxies by Seeds+Backman gives the real reason why. I assume Google would, too, for anyone interested in the real reason.
Galileo no doubt did huge additions to the field of science, and did fix and refute and work upon a lot of Aristotles work.... however: You shouldnt feel bad that his life was ruined. The Pope and the Papal Foundations actually gave him money; but the Church only allowed him to publish his book if he put both sides of the argument in the book, and also put what the Pope had to say about it. The book, however, was clearly for the Copernican viewpoint, and had the Popes dialogue under "Simplicio" (simpleton) which was filled with errors corrected later in the book, A really bad idea. And he merely escaped death with "suspected heresy", and was put under House arrest for his remaining days for calling the Pope a moron and likely supporting the Copernican viewpoint.

“Father of modern science” he creates what is still the best tool before a fact even takes place, he took an empirical approach -using actual evidence!! Not just assumptions!!- and began testing the data he would gathered w his telescope, etc, and begin observations & experiments that would be used for predictions based on the results of that hypothesis
0:42 Aristotle was wrong. Mass will only fall at the right velocity that gravity works. Because if you take 2 objects with different mass. While holding it you can feel the Mass of the heaviest so it means that gravity is pulling the heaviest faster than the Lighter one.
that why i believed in humanity and science not the bible and god..look how the way church was treating scientist..put in jail for life because the truth.
***** So you're saying you don't the idea that religion and science aren't compatible? Or you don't like that idea being propagated for personal agendas? Regardless, I think I agree, but a lot of what is happening is more than just false representation of our ancestors; its an eradication of tradition and a revision of history. Its sad.
Which is why, during the Renaissance, there was also a period of Reformation, as people who didn't agree with their Catholic Church started their own branches of Christianity that fell under Protestantism...
Galileo galilei: the most important person to science and to physics and Revolutionized astronomy. Yes, he was a Catholic scientist. The church was not against him, not because of his scientific research. It was because he was at the time of the church that the church Hold the scientific theory that the earth is in the center of the universe that Catholic philosophers proposed for centuries.
This is ridiculous. You need to make sure you are actually giving real history, rather than what you've heard through others. The Church did not send him to the dungeons, it was the local government. And the Church didn't have a problem with heliocentrism. They told him that until he could prove it (which he couldn't) he needed to teach it as a theory. Furthermore, the Church didn't condemn heliocentrism, it condemned Galileo's attempt to reinterpret Scripture, which was not under his authority. Finally, while under house arrest he was allowed to continue his research, travel to see doctors, continued to go to Mass every day and was able to publish... until he published a work that greatly disparaged his good friend the pope.
Cute video, but radically oversimplified, and surprisingly wrong on some fact. For example, the Church did not send Galileo to a “dungeon”. He was placed under house arrest at an Italian villa where he published some of his greatest work. Galileo was not opposed by the Church for being a good scientist. It was for being a bad theologian. The church and its leaders often supported Galileo. The pope had been his friend and defender in the past. But Galileo was often arrogant (like many brilliant men). When he was asked to write about heliocentrism in a neutral way, he chose not to, and purposely insulted his friend, the pope, in the process. This video is merely a child’s view of the Galileo affair. A better source is this more sophisticated and scholarly outline: th-cam.com/video/iJ2j3jv5Xyw/w-d-xo.html Enjoy
BC does mean before Christ but if you see bce it basically means the same thing (before common era) AD is quite frequently disbelieved as after death or after dinosaurs but it is Latin -anno domini - translated to the year of the lord. This is when Jesus was born and the new year count began👍🏻

Galileo started modern physics by saying that speed is distance divided by time. .
He applied numbers to motion. .
The animation was fantastic and funny. I really feel sorry for this guy...
Galilei (Born 1564) didn't pave the way for Copernicus (Died 1543), but he added very precise observations to the heliocentric theory from Copernicus.
i'm going to use this video in my presentation !

Nobody stopped Galileo from writing. Under house arrest he completed his finest work on mechanics and motion which he had printed in the Netherlands.
