Do You Need Adjustable Control Arms?? Jeep Gladiator Core 4x4 Install

  • Welcome back to another video!
    In this video im going a little more in-depth on the "whys" and "hows" about Adjustable Control arms.
    Check out Core4x4.com and they are even giving 5% off using the code JKGG.
    Installing a set of adjustable control arms is a fairly simple project, and we gain alot from them.
    After installing the 1.5" teraflex leveling kit on my 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, i wanted to add a set of front control arms to help add a little caster, as well as add some stronger components for offroading. I chose the Core4x4 arms for a few reasons, they are affordable, they are available in various powercoated colors, and they use Johnny Joints. Im a fan of Johnny joints on a Jeep like this because they are very versatile, great for offroad use (flex and misalignment) while still being quiet and soft on the street. Johnny joints are also very easy to rebuild if you ever need to replace them.
    Like ive mentioned in various videos, we have offroad tested the Jeep Gladiator stock, as well as with 35s. Now that we have added a front bumper, winch, and control arms, its time to test it out offroading with 37s!!
    So, in short. If you have a lifted Jeep (TJ,XJ,JK,JL,JT, or any Jeep with control arms) then i highly suggest a set of adjustable control arms. Even if your jeep is stock, this will be a great upgrade from factory components.
    Dont forget to have a XL Crescent Wrench to tighten the jam nuts: amzn.to/2XO2R2y
    Or a set of Crows foot wrenches: amzn.to/33nYcFM
    Magnetic Angle finder for caster/pinion angle: amzn.to/2QW8fPM

    Ben I feel like you undersold these arms a little bit. Calling them "budget friendly" arms leaves a Rough Country taste in my mouth lol Core 4x4 are the real deal. Guys, if you just want a lift and big tires for the "look" the Tier 2 are your budget friendly option. If you want the real deal, beefy, beat on them, forged Johnny joints step up to the Tier 3 or Tier 4, they are great arms at a good price! Made in the USA and they all have an unbeatable "you break them, we replace them" lifetime warranty. Plus free shipping in the USA plus 5% off? You can't go wrong. I have no affiliation with Core 4x4, I've just owned them for four years and they've held up great.

    Love my core4x4 short arms for my ZJ lift. I went with their tier 1 because I wanted rubber bushings as it was my daily driver. It was really nice to dial in the pinon angle.
    Shout out to them, my track bar came with a larger johny joint than what would fit the bracket. I called them up, they asked for a pic, and had a replacement to me in two days. Excellent product, excellent customer service, and their prices are very fair in my opinion.

    I just got a 2020 Jeep 2 door sport, yeah the cheapest one I could get. But I did add the 2” Mopar lift with 35” KM3’s. I really like the height but I do think I need a better track bar and maybe some upgraded control arms like the ones you just installed because I feel like there is a lot of play in the steering going around curves making it a little white knuckle while driving. And I’d like to add some JKS quick disconnects for it as well. But you make all the mods look so easy to install I’m jealous of your skills man.

    Planning for adjustable control arms for my JL four-door Rubicon. Considering the core brand you used versus one from synergy that uses a pinch bolt and adjustable collar that allows you to adjust caster without removing the control arm. They are 2x the cost .. do you think that feature is worth the extra money?

    The tj, lj control arms were a u channel to allow a twist and flex without cracking the arm and not wearing out the bushing. This gave a light weight long life rubber bushing that did not bind during flex.
    Yes they were easy to damage when you landed on a big rock, but I have only personally seen two bent. Easy and cheap to replace.
    Johnny joints are great. Strong, but costly. Lift and heavy wheeling with big tires.... yeah up grade.

    Great video, I currently have the evo lower control arms but was looking at core for the rest. I see you have your zerk fittings facing down... seems to be at risk, but at least you can grease them. The evo zerk fittings have them faced up. Keep us updated on if they get damaged.

    • @JKGearandGadgets
      @JKGearandGadgets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, it’s easier to grease like this, but also more prone to Offroad damage. It’s personal preference, some would rather have the Offroad protection (and remove the arm for greasing). Luckily zerks are cheap, and easy to replace, but if they break off in the threads then you have to deal with removing them lol.

    Hey Ben I’ve got a question. Is there some type of chart as to what the recommended pinion and caster angles are for a JKU for varying lift heights?
    For example, I’ve got a JKU with a 3.5” lift. Is there specific pinion and caster angles I should be at? I know all my arms need some minor adjustments because I can visibly see the axles shifted too far forward or back etc.
    And I’m running all 8 core 4x4 tier 4 arms as well!!!

    • @JKGearandGadgets
      @JKGearandGadgets  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on your driveshaft. The stock CV style can handle more caster and less pinion angle (so 4.5 caster, 1.5 pinion). If your running aftermarket double cardan driveshaft you need to make sure pinion angle is closer (so probably 3.4-4* caster.
      With 3.5” lift you can probably get mid 4s in your caster

    I have a 2 door jk with 2.5 inch lift and 35’s tire. What would a recommended angle on it to ride better on highway.Will the control arm help with it swaying from left to right.Need help thanks

      Swaying or body roll is going to be shocks. To help with high speed steering stability get some lower control arms and adjust caster to 5-6 degrees

    To adjust rear toe it seems you have to unbolt one end to turn it then put it back in. Is that correct?

    Turned the knuckles on a couple axles, not the most fun I've ever had, but worth it when I was able to dial caster in and had my driveshaft aligned with the pinion.😁

    My daughter just bought a 2012 jeep rubicon and it has a rough country lift and I noticed it does not have adjustable control arms and it has 35"tired and it drives horrible and wobbles if she hits a bump.all the steering components are tight and solid.can you give us some suggestions.

      I would suggest looking at the trackbar bolts. Have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you are underneath and make sure nothing is moving.

    Having you considered doing install for your subscribers? I'm sure you don't have time but thought I'd ask if it's a short term/long term goal for you.

      eventually yes. My long term goal is to open a shop. Not a full blown public install shop, but a garage/shop for videos and case by case installs. Right now I’m limited by where I live, and my full time job. Hopefully in the next few years I can make it happen.

    Thanks for taking the time to explain all of this in one solid video. I have shared it with my jeep crew as an FYI video. I noticed you pointed the zerks down on the lower arms. Do you think they will get damaged on the trail? Probably can't get to them if they are pointing up, eh? Hmm. Also, I've heard debate about where to put the adjustable end. I've heard typically it should be installed closest to the frame bracket, like you did here. What are the pros and cons of either way?

    • @JKGearandGadgets
      @JKGearandGadgets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The zerks facing up or down is a common question. Some like the accessibility of greasing, some want the Offroad protection (which means you would have to drop the arm to grease). Either way it has pros and cons. Luckily zerks are cheap and easy to replace. The negative is when they break with the threads still in and you have to remove it (still not too hard since they should be installed loosely).
      As for the adjustment end. I prefer it at the frame side since it’s a higher location and less likely to get damaged. In this case, the arm has a bend in it for tire clearance during turning, and the arm is designed to be mounted this way. Thanks for sharing the video!

      Gotta adjust the lowers first to the length that will center your axle back where it should be. Then adjust uppers evenly to adjust pinion angle

    Nothing I can say about the comprehensive content that hasn't already been said but Ive noticed the overall production value has gotten so much tighter & clean...transitions, jump cuts, edits, angles, close ups etc....everything just seems more cohesive. Good stuff Benjamin!

      @@JKGearandGadgets the post production process is often the unsung "hero" of these videos. Shooting is the easy part, it's taking the raw footage, putting it in a pot and cooking it up for it's final presentation is where the tedious work is.

    I know this is old.
    But do adjustable control arms increase ride height at all?
    I have a 3.5” skyjacker lift that seemed higher at first, and it came with front lower control arms. But I’m seeing others with 3.5” lift but have all control arms upgraded, and they seem to be riding higher than I am.
