  • Valmiki contemporary of Rama.
Four types of works. Shastra: one that deals purely on philosophical aspects.
Kavya: pure poetical work that makes use of the 9 rasas
Shastra kavya: One that lays stress on the philosophical aspect and less on the poetic aspect. example: Mahabharatha
Kavya shastra: One that stresses on the poetic aspect and less on philosophy. Example: Ramayana.
Is Valmiki a hunter ? None of the old works ever say talk about Valmiki being a hunter. Valmiki is the son of Varuna. He himself quotes प्राचेतसो मुनिवृषा meaning he is the son of Varuna and Vasishta brother.
The incident of Krouncha birds and one killed by a hunter. Out of anger Valmiki uttered a curse मा निषाद त्वम अप्रतिष्ठाम आगम ........this sounds like a curse but in fact it extols the greatness of Rama who killed Ravana (Krouncha). Krouncha = one who has a crooked mind.
Distressed by his angry expression Valmiki sits in meditation. Brahma appears and orders him to compose Ramayana.
Psychology: Valmiki was continuously thinking about Rama and his valor in killing Ravana. It is this contemplation that led to his subconscious to compose the poem.
The verse is in Anushtup chandas which has 8X4 syllables, a quartet with 8 syllables in each.
