Thank you for this comparison review. Based on yours and others notes, I would hypothesize that the powers that be at Diageo decided to stop putting older than 10 year old Talisker into the new 10 year bottle vs what they were likely routinely putting into the older 10 year bottle which to my palate tasted a good deal older than 10 years old. Likely to either increase profits or to meet increased demand. It sounds like most reviews I've seen for the new bottle seem to more closely match reviews of the NAS Talisker Storm, than the older 10 year. Storm doesn't hold a candle to the older 10 Year. I believe the older 10 year product had a portion of 11-18 year old stuff in it which contributed to its impeccable balance. I think the new bottle recipe had to compensate for the lack of finesse by amping up the caramels, vanilla and smoke to cover up the lack of balance they no longer strike with the bottle. They didn't do that because people were demanding they change the recipe as Talisker 10 was a classic! Really a sad development if you ask me as there are a plethora of overtly smokey / peated scotches out there with big caramel and vanilla notes if one is searching for such a thing. The old Talisker 10 is scotch whiskey perfection IMO. The end of an era.

Big fan of Talisker and have to admit that I get a strong caramel note from the new version, that if I drink 4-5 drams the next morning I get a headache. maybe too much caramel colour in the new version, sensing an almost artificial taste.
Also, the old version is more rounded and balanced.
    Thanks for the review. cheers

    Honest conclusion.
Proves you can’t go wrong with any T10!
One of my favorite go too’s.
    Cheers 🥃

Actually you can go wrong !! The new Talisker isn't even remotely the same.

I tasted the old bottling, and thought the reviews of the new one did not match my notes at all. This video goes to prove my findings bang on. The nosing of old one is even close to Auchentoshan American Oak, which is for my taste a very pleasant light fruity whisky.

Thanks for comment , and sub . Much appreciated. I’m pretty sure there is more whisky lovers who can confirm that Talisker is going in a wrong direction with these 10 yo .

I prefer the original 10 yr old better myself, and didn’t really care for the New version when I first tasted. However, now that I have gone thru a half bottle of the New it is growing on me. I do like the News more creamier opening but I prefer the olds smoother mid-notes and finish.
All -in-all not sure why they would change such a classic well loved formula. The Old was my absolute favorite single malt but I cannot say that the New is my number one. It’s probably dropped a couple at least.

Thank for comment... IMO this change maybe cause due to the casks quality ?

A really nice comparo, which I've also done and with similar results. If I were Diageo I would have given the Talisker Storm an 8 (or even 5) Year Old age statement and made it the peat bomb in the range, while retaining the 10 YO with its fruitiness and elegance. And I'd ditch the Skye altogether.

I like the old talisker. I feel the alcohol is very strong in the new talisker

I think the new is very harsh compared to the old. The old was incredibly smooth.

True... New one seems to be more intense towards cask influence and more woody... Thanks for your comments... Cheers

Interesting review Wlad. How long have each bottle been opened? I have noticed the smoke forward on starting a bottle, but drops back over the consumption period.

Both bottle been opened about 6 months... I understand that the small bottle may oxidize a bit quicker but still quite big difference between them two... Cheers...

I finally got a bottle of the new label 10 to compare with the old Label 10 and they are absolutely different. Confirmed blind. The new version is sweeter, has less oak influence, hints of basil and hand soap, flinty, less herbs and spices. Has a shorter finish. And is missing the balance of the older version. I also compared it with Talisker Storm. The noses are very similar with the storm being a bit more mild but the storm was not nearly as good with prevailing bitterness and youth. The old Label 10 is drier on the nose vs the new label 10, and has more oak influence, spicier, and has a longer and better balanced finish. They are quite different. The old version is much superior IMO and comes off as more matured and aged.

Came here to say just that. I think that proves there is a pattern and the recipe for T10 has been altered for sure.

I have no idea why they changed the formula but why the heck do they do this to the consumer?!?! The older version is fantastic and I truly enjoy it. The new is similar but harsher. I do not know why Tallisker chose to change formula but I am very disappointed. I have 2 backup bottles of the older version and I'm afraid that these bottles are going to be hard to find.

I think all these changes have been made due to the shortage of aged whisky because most of it going to JW blends
