  • My new home decor goals and learning from the mistakes I have made. My 2 Bedroom Apartment here has been a special place for us...so many thrift store adventures...and now getting ready for us to say goodbye to the pace this year feeling whistful but so excited for a new home to decorate and landscape...and BACKYARD for DESI!!!
I had fun this week going to antique stores and third shops with my dear friend Hal! We sure are the Bickersons but we have fun!
Please know how much you mean to me. I so look forward to seeing you every week and reading your words of wisdom and sharing your heart. You make my life so bright.
Love you to the moon and back and I always will,
    xxoo Susan & The Dez #decoratingonabudget #MyNewHomeIDEAS!

Many times during the week….in my privacies,
I light candles and say my intention. I then light it and release all the positive energies in my ❤.
    Universe,
    I need a room, or a place.
A room or place with my own bath and a window to sit by and do my makeup.
I need a space for the things that I love, like my pictures of white flowers and street cafes in Paris.
I need a space for my car and a park that I can walk to and hug a tree.
But most of all…dear universe, is there a
place where I can finally live
authentically, be accepted authentically, and be just who I am……
    Me.☮️ ❤☮️

If you remarry you would need to ask yourself whether or not you want to trade your peace and comfort to accommodate his tastes. Decor USED to be a woman’s venue (feathering the nest), but not so anymore. Once he retired my spouse decided to become very opinionated about changing how our house is decorated, although over half of the house is already decorated to suit his tastes! Arrggghh!

20 years ago, I persuaded my husband to go look at a fixer upper in a cute neighborhood I had always admired. He was reluctant to say the least. However, when we turned the corner and entered the back yard, we both fell instantly in love. It was the best of two worlds. A house located within town limits that had 20 acres of untouched woodlands beyond the back yard. We bought the house and in the midst of remodeling, added a sunroom and deck so we could enjoy the beautiful scenery every day. This home has been my sanctuary and oasis through the turbulent waters of life; sickness, death, job layoffs, etc. We've created beautiful memories with our kids and 7 grandchildren. I love it even more today than I did that first day. I hope you find your sanctuary too.

There was a small town my Dad used to drive through to go visit my Grandparents in Southeastern Kentucky. Even as I small child, I loved this little town because it had an energy and even an aroma that I dearly loved. Well, I grew up and married a soldier, lived in Europe for 14 years and in 9 different States in the good old USA. When we retired my dear husband brought me back to Kentucky and we bought a little house in that town I had fallen in love with when I was a little girl. That town is Bardstown, KY which happens to be the Bourbon Capitol of the World. The aroma I smelled when I was little was the sour mash that would grow up to be none other than Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey. It still smells like baking bread and I still love this town! Enjoy your house-hunting!

I was just looking at 55 and over communities. I've lived in my house for nearly 29 years and I think I'm just going to stay here. It's going to all 4 of my kids in my will, so it's my investment. I only have stairs to use the laundry, so I think I can do it. Also, I don't really want to downsize when my family does come visit and it's a big family. So, that's my decision. Oh, I have a fenced in back yard for my dog, too so that's another thing. Right now I've got to focus on cleaning, sorting, donating, and I just bought a new couch and chair for my living room and I'm very excited about them arriving. Oh flooring! Under the carpet here we're worn out hardwood floors and now I don't think I can have those floors done. Oh well. My kids love this house. First base is a tree that has grown 20 feet in all these years. There's room to grill in the back yard and play corn hole so I'm staying!

my home is an Scottish/English styled cottage, where the tea kettle is always on, the door always open, and some sort of bite to eat at the ready. Friends, neighbors, and family come by for visits and conversations. Once, a friend sat down on the sofa, and said, "I love your home, I feel like I can put my feet on the coffee table if I wish". My reply was, "Of course, go right ahead, that is what I do when I sit there!" I thrift a lot, and have a lot of things that were my mom's, and some of her friend's, so it is
comfortable, eclectic, and filled with all the things I love!

Hi Susan! I am a 71y/o American living in Italy. My husband and I came here to live 6 years ago...this is where he is from, so we had a place to live. Sadly, he died this past October. So now I am getting ready to move back to the states. Like yourself, I am not sure where I'll be living yet..although it will be near my only son and his beautiful family, in Georgia. I've lived there before, and I like it, but it probably wouldn't be my first choice. I realise that now that I am alone, and being the age I am, my choices start to narrow....so be it. Like yourself, I have a great appreciation for art and anything beautiful that speaks to my heart. I also love beauty products and make-up application. While living here, I've gathered around myself some wonderful pieces. But I cannot take them back to the states because it's expensive, and impractical. These things, for the most part, are not expensive, but just enjoyable to me. And people coming to visit would comment on my unusual, but happy choices. I wanted to tell you how much of a comfort your channel has been to me here. Your honesty, and love of beauty has inspired me many times over the past few years . And being a full time caregiver, far away from friends and family, and hardly speaking the language....it has been at times, a very lonely road. You have brightened my journey! I really wish I could stay here because it is an extremely beautiful place....but it is also a very complicated system to navigate. So off I go, once again! God bless you in your next adventure! I'll still be watching your uploads, and since we are in a somewhat similar situation, looking for ideas and thoughts on decor and starting a new chapter in life's journey. Ciao Bella!

During that time my marriage crumbled and ended and I developed agoraphobia. I have been in apartments ever since and managed to function very well. I would love a house to call my own again and I haven’t given up. Eternal hope is the key. Another knee replacement in a few months then a part time remote job to make some money to save and enjoy life. I live close to my kids and grandkids in Iowa but warm sandy beaches or any beaches would be wonderful. Susan, your home is beautiful and I know that your son and grandchildren will be so happy to live close to you for however long you do. You’re a beautiful lady, inside and out. Thank you for your smiles and Desi😊

I found that the color purple...lilac and dark plum....make me feel gooooood. So I took my son's old bedroom and painted the walls and ceiling and bookcases and trim in my wonderful color palette. I feel really fine when I'm in there! It's my yoga, crafting, office room and I now spend the most time there. (Or here...that's where I am now. LOL). My daughter walked in and said....ugh! It's so, so, ....so....purple! I love it!

This video today, Susan just sinks right down to my soul. My friend, it's a long story, but she needed a larger apartment, so she moved us. I feel it's cold in feeling and hollow. I followed your suggestions on thrufting for art and little things to add. She pays the rent because she needs a secondary home for work, I need a roof over my head. I have very little money to spare each month, so a thrift store visit it was, following your guidelines for art and unique items. I found wonderful things. Thank you so much. I couldn't wait for you to launch tonight so I could share with you and the other lovely people here. Thank you, Susan. 🫶⭐️💕

I enjoyed this video, because my husband and I are looking to move near our only daughter, the issue I am having is it is on the ocean and so many people who know me are telling me oh your not going to decorate with all those antiques are you, you want a beachy theme, and now we live in an old converted cotton mill in the clock tower where the ceilings are high and the rooms are large. I love the ocean but I don't want a beachy theme, I love all my collected antique pictures and lamps and tables etc. Yet I do not want it cluttered, I like the white airey farmhouse look, but I still want to add some of my beautiful antique pieces here and there. I am 75 next month but in good health since I started on a carnivore diet 3 yrs ago, they call it a healing diet I researched it on you tube and found many doctors like Dr, Berry, and Dr, Baker, it has healed me of many things that I have had for 40 yrs. but the one thing it is a age reducing diet so much so that I was food shopping with me 52 yrs old daughter and she was in the check out line in front of me when the cashier said would you like me to put your sisters groceries in your cart, my daughter turned and said my sister that's my mother and they started to laugh when I gave the check out girls the thumbs up. This has happened 5 times in 3 yrs. so that is such an encouragement that I am on the right road of eating for my health, its is everything we have been told to eat for health that didn't work and doing the exact opposite protein and fat saved me from all those old age ailments. So I wish you good luck on your journey and I can't wait to start ours. Blessings!

What makes my house my home??
Each room holds something that represents either my childhood or belonged to a family member: my grandmother's bedroom set, my childhood Teddy Bears, a cookie jar that was my great grandmother's, my mother's teacup collection, etc.
If I were to relocate, (I have been in my current home 33 years), these "treasures" will go with me and make my new house, my home.

But then I see You Tubers like you making it so much fun. Last week I found an original painting for $6.00, that I absolutely love. Positive reinforcement. I saw a saying the other day "buy things that will make your place the best estate sale ever" -- and that's now my philosophy. Your videos are beautiful. Home: That word encompasses so much. No matter what, “there’s no place like home”. I’m a thrifter, and honestly I cannot think of one certain thing that makes my home, but I love pictures of friends and family. My mother always covered book cases and shelves with pictures of the people who were the greatest part of her life. I’m pretty sure, those people were her granddaughters. When she passed , my dad was still with us for another seven years, but when he passed I became the keeper of her collection of photos. Photos that are candid and capture a real life moment are the best!

What makes my house a home is many things: the furniture set from the 50s that my parents gave me (reupholstered in orange, my favorite color), the furniture I took when I got divorced after 32 years of marriage, and the new items I bought for me. Also, my dog Pete made my house a home when I moved here. This house was for both of us. He died in April 2022, but now I have a crazy cat, who makes my house a home❤

A real home has animals in it! I love when a home is really lived in and there's order but it's not a perfect space. When it's too perfect, it just makes me nervous and that takes away from really enjoying entertaining and living in it. I like order since everything in the home has a place of it's own and it's much easier to find things when I'm looking for it. I love the smell of home cooked meals and home made deserts, now that's a home. Calm and peaceful energy in a home is another thing that I enjoy without any drama. I read once as I recall it said "a house is made out of brick and stone and a home is made of love alone.

Not just because of the wonderful way you have decorated but because you and Desi were there to WELCOME US every week. It was a safe, comfortable "home away from home". But it means a new chapter (it's going to be a long but much beloved NYTimes Best Seller)-- filled with great opportunities to shop, collect, display and cherish. We luv you so much. So much you'll never know. Take us with you, will ya? And remember we are sending prayers and focused, concentrated vibes to manifest the perfect "Enchanted Cottage". Remember that movie? One of the things I love about our new(er) home of 5 years is our six foot white artificial tree in the living room. The attached lights can either be in pastels or white. Our option with a handy little button.
We bought the tree 5 years back to use for Christmases here, but two years back, during COVID, I decided to leave it up all year and REDECORATE it for every occasion to keep our spirits bright . So there's Christmas, Valentines day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, and then that long stretch from Easter to Christmas I decorate it with cute little nautical things because we live on a canal.
A person could do the 4th of July and Birthdays, little antique cars, anything made of light woods, fancy press board, plastics or cloth over plastic. It's endless. Doing this yearly decorating brings us so much joy. When kids come over I have often let them decorate it and it brings everyone such fun and makes for happy memories together.
The white tree is something I always thought about doing and now we are. I love it and thanks to specialty shops and Amazon I really have unique and awesome collections to hang in it. So festive.
The one mistake made, and it was expensive too, was the first round of Nautical Decorations I bought were all made of blown glass from a fairly famous company back east in the USA. They arrived completely in tack (all the way to Alberta Canada) and are so very breathtaking, but they were way too heavy for the limbs. My dreams were dashed as they are gorgeous. I found a good home for them near the dining room table but it WAS A a costly error for the white tree. I'd love to send you photos if you'd like to see the different seasons that I've done. I'd include hubby by always saying "WE" decorate it but he was no help at all. 🤣🤣🤣

The one thing that makes my house my ‘home,’ and is very special to me is - When I lived in England, I collected antiques, and my home is decorated with them - very eclectic and cozy. But my favorite is the Victorian tiles I hunted down everywhere I went. When I returned to the USA, and renovated my kitchen, I had enough tiles to form my backsplash. I laid them out in all the various colors and designs, like a patchwork quilt. I could never leave this house because of my quirky (and I think) lovely backsplash! All the best of luck, Susan, in your new adventure - I am SO looking forward to seeing all you do! It will be a lot of fun!! 🙋‍♀️🥰💕‼️

One of the things that I like the most, about your apartment, is the long gallery wall. You don't see that in very many apartments and it is quite magical the way you have your art displayed. When I look around my house, I have a few pictures, on the walls, but it is very minimal. It does not give the same vibe or pop that you have been able to achieve in decorating your home. You have a definite knack of using a lot of art and decor, but it gives a very warm and inviting vibe and does not really look overdone. I am sure I am not the only one that picks things up, at the thrift store, and says, "Susan would love this". LOL

My home (apartment) is filled with treasures from my family, from thrift stores, from friends. It's filled with color, the first thing I bought was an area rug for the living room with pretty much every color in it, in an Indian style. No matter what I add, no matter what colors I use, it all works! I guess I can say my home is filled with love.

Susan I love you talkin about purchasing your own home!!! Kudos for you gal, you go for it !!! I also love decorating and you will have so much fun you have wonderful taste actually just like mine so I will enjoy watching your decorating if your new home....
I would like to warn you about your gardening.... At the age of 70 I could still get on my knees and pull weeds and plant and have thoroughly enjoyed gardening my whole life...BUT now at 75 I can no longer get up and down to pull weeds... Yes the age does catch up with us.... So my suggestion is to plant things that come up every year.. and keep your gardening to a minimum.... Stone , brick and mulch are beautiful , lots of grass a few trees, electric lawn mower). Just recommendations from an older version of you, and on her own😊

I’m so happy you’re talking about decorating 😊. I love how your place look. I hope I can learn from you. I don’t have creativity 😔.
Please make more videos about decorating, where you shop, how to combine everything.
Just to give you and idea about my house, all walls are empty because I just can’t decide what’s the best decor to buy.
Take us shopping for decor for your new home😊.
    I’m so happy for you😊🌷🌷🌷

Your little apartment reflected you, and your time there. It is beautiful, Susan, but I love that you are in the midst of being excited to find, and decorate your new home for now, and into the future! We moved from a four bedroom home, and downsized to a much smaller home a few years ago. We are definitely struggling to decorate our space now to make it feel like a home, and not just a house. We have so many beautiful pieces that we love, but not the space to enjoy it all at once, anymore. One room at a time, and we'll get there. Love, and hugs, Susan, Sherrey💕☃☃💕

Hi Susan! After living in a beautiful vintage home for 12 years I was forced to move due to the landlord selling the house. My heart was broken! So I picked myself up and was very fortunate to have found a cute apartment in a nice area. I’ve been here since August and have grown to love my little cottage. I’ve given my home a name…Quinnsbury Cottage in honor of my Irish ancestor John Quinn. I am still in the process of decorating…it’s a work in progress. It is not my ideal home but it is where I’m at right now. I still have dreams of a little cottage on a piece of land where I can have a garden and enjoy nature. That vision is still in my heart❤️

Susanna if you aren't aware there are a handful of cottage videos on YT right know. Type in things like Cottage Living, Slow Living, etc. A few I subscribed to are not in the USA but just as charming. It's kind of a new movement right now.

You are such an inspiration on how to overcome difficult challenges alone. Your kind and gentle way brings me to your channel every Sunday morning. BTW watching Desi play in his new backyard is so heartwarming. ❤

So glad you moved near your family. They need you and you will add so much to each other's lives. I live a few minutes from my daughter and her family and have helped raise my granddaughter. I watched her since she was born while her parents worked. She's 13 now and i pick her up from school most days and visit with her and her parents a little each day. She still asks to sleep overnight at my home and I love it! I still have my own friends and life and we respect each others privacy . My husband died a few years ago and occasionally living alone can be lonely but I am not ready to give up any of my independence either. Congrats on your decision and new home Susan!

What gives me joy are Sunny and Tippy, my two wonderful cats. Their cat mama brought them when they were kittens because l put milk out on my porch for a neighbourhood stray. I also love my 4 birds. And my family live with me as well. My apartment is greatly decorated with my shoes and clothes. I am turning my place into a Parisian retreat. I love decor, fashion, writing and other hobbies as well.

I think my personal attitude about my life, either makes or breaks my home. If you love yourself, your life, then your home will reflect that and make others become so comfortable sharing your space. I think so anyway. I know where I have to make changes. Your home is so lovely and inviting and it goes beyond your style and things and thank you so much for sharing with all of us fans.

My mother was perhaps your mother's age. My mother too liked her plastic flowers around the house (and a few plastic fruits). Those were new when she was just married, so I guess that stuck with her. I got rid of my Living Room couch when my parents died, and I inherited their stuff. Before I sold their house, I had to clean it out. I took their upholstered Living Room chairs. So around a large round cocktail table I have two pairs of chairs (2 antiques and to newer ones) and also two other chairs, an antique Martha Washington upholstered chair and a cushy lounge chair with a matching ottoman in Burgandy velvet with tassel fringe at the bottom in another corner of the room. Together with her tier table and her piano and a few of her side tables, they conjure better times with my parents. I sometimes cry when I go in that room now. I am so glad you showed us that picture of the chairs around a low table. I have often thought that what I inherited was not very good design-no couch in that room, but I love those pieces so much. I think the chairs make the room more conversational. BTW, I think it is brave of you to find a new adventure and purchase a new home in another town so far away from where you are now. Good luck. The things that make my house a home are all the things I inherited from my parents' home. However, I would give it all up, just to spend more time with them. But before they passed, I would have said, my two cats (before they also passed), my husband (still here) and my house plants make this house a home. Also, the smell of my cooking and the happy feeling I get from just sitting in my own house, decorated with my taste in every room.

Dear Susan, After my husband passed, I adventured into a new life. It was both challenging and exciting. Sometimes even overwhelming. But, now, I find such joy in having re-engineered not just my home, but myself. That has turned out to be the grander part of this age of wisdom. It took a “minute” to find my house…but, oh when I did…it has been magical making it me. Everyone who visits experiences it’s warmth and doesn’t want to leave. You’re going to do that too! Pray over and around it and there will be peace in your walls and your walkways. I’ll do it with you❤❤❤ Love, Toni in mossy, magical Savannah

It's a mining town with abundant history. What makes our place truly ours is our wrap around deck that overlooks the trees and neighboring rooftops...Amber Edison lights makes our little neighborhood feel like a mountain village.
