  • Paragraph Structure is something we learn about in school, but tend to forget over the years.
Let's revisit the basics in order to write a well-developed, effective paragraph. A paragraph should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. And it should follow 4 key elements: unity, order, cohesion, and completeness. I explain each of these in the video using an example from my own literature review. I really hope this video will help you with your writing, be sure to let me know any of your tips in the comments and subscribe to see more PhD related content.

Thanks Ciara, this breakdown is really useful. I'd be keen to see how you develop your lit review paragraphs to include critical analysis of the texts you refer to. As usual, looking forward to the next video in this series and your productivity tips.

Thanks Claire ! I mainly critique the more computer science based papers as the ones related to sports science generally I more lean on for introductory information. I would mainly be reiterating the limitations of the computer science papers which are usually pretty clear and based on the accuracy achieved in their models

I mainly link paragraphs using the concluding sentence that I mentioned, these typically are written so that they lead nicely into the next point

Quick q - did you learn academic writing on your own? I've been in academia for years now and my brain seems to just be resistant to this writing structure. I feel kinda stupid. Maybe it'll click if I actually put effort into practicing it more often
