@funkybowser My favorite defense drill is just a 1-1 isolation drill. Where you have to stop the offense player from getting it under or away for 6 seconds. Biggest thing about man defense is taking away the easy throw and forcing the offense to make a tough throw and tough play. More videos to come! Thanks for the comment!!!
All your tips have been really helpful. I appreciate your devotion to helping all us noobs learn to play ultimate and grow the sport.
Brodie, I think everyone in the ultimate community would appreciate it if you could reupload this video.
Austin Walker ye
Agreed
Agreeed
@TreeHealzFTW Did you get a chance to watch the forehand huck video? That will show you how to throw this pass further. Let me know
@rjmcleod04 No i completely agree with you. And all the videos I have posted have been directed towards new players. I will get more into the advanced throws after we go over the basics. But i do believe in teaching only inside out at the very beginning until they get the hang of it.
@newbiex2 for beginners u want to practice stepping straight in front to generate all your power through the throw. And i keep my foot facing more towards my target than sideways. Good questions keep them coming.
It's time I'm watching this video, and after several months of trowing a few of these, I think I've finally got it ! Thank a lot, Brodie ! :D
This video really helped me, keep on doing what you’re doing!
Brodie, it would be great if you could upload this again please.
Thanks, it's a great tutorial!!
Your name is dick
@Fugazee23 yea at some point i want to go into more detail for these throws. and yup thats deliberate
This is going to help me out a lot, and I ordered a darkhorse disc and a ManUp T-shirt Brodie!
It's all good for me Brodie. And thanks for the huck advice!
Thanks Brodie! Love Frisbee
@Frostbite635 filmed it today so look forward in the upcoming week!
thank you for all of your videos..............
@danilobalaguer Hopefully its windy this weekend, if so i will be making a video on how to throw in the wind.
@MrMincredible Correct haven't done a video on that just yet
My homework for the next few weeks. Thanks man!
Thanks Brodie. I was pretty good at throwing forehands, but I've never thrown it that far. I'll use your tips and try to improve.
@rudman920 Well I would say in general a backhand pull can generate more distance and hang time than a forehand pull, but then again it comes down to what your best at. Good question
@brodiesmith21 great video! id also like a video on throwing with a mark. hucks would be nice but id really like a video on breaking the mark, IO/OI throws and pivoting.
keep up the good work!
TH-cam is stunned at your awesomeness!
Hey Brodie, your videos have been a big help and I really appreciate what you're doing for both the sport and the players. Could you do a video about how to huck inside out and outside in backhands and forehands? Also, you're awesome
@nndhawan Good catch. The reason I can get away with it is due to the amount of spin I can already generate on the disc. Also, I always try and over exaggerate the motion that way if you fall short your still ok. Think about golf players. A lot of them over exaggerate their practice swings some way or another before they actual strike the ball...I hope that helps.
another great video :) thanks
great videos. after seeing some less-than-pretty bids this weekend, I was thinking maybe a video on proper layout form would be helpful?
also, it might be a bit more difficult but body positioning is something i see people struggle with a lot, especially on defense
Hey Brodie, great tutorials as always, I'm trying to teach my rec team the forehand and it seems the biggest challenge is getting that wrist to break to be an IO huck. Is there any exercise or practice to help that feel like a more natural motion as part of the technique? That and how to break the t-rex arms habit haha Thanks and keep up the great work!
Thanks a lot for the inside-out fix. My flicks always drift left, and I hope it works!
Yes especially if you don't get a lot of wrist snap on the disc.
@bwebwetata def...throwing in the wind is a great topic
@esowill oh ok got it. will do
@joeschmidt45 Pulling video is def on the list of videos to do!
You rule man. - Casual frisbee thrower looking to build some skills
I saw you throw a forehand pretty darn fast at the Boston clinic a while back. You can really get that thing up to speed.!
@run12man You got it! Working on it!
Brodie is deff a beast when it comes to frisbee
@t3hrique all great ideas! thanks!
goatly in the background!!!
@brodiesmith21 when im throwing in the wind, which normally only comes in with the rain in Ga, i usually use just a hammer and slightly blade it because the wind works against my blade and makes it flat. it works pretty effectively
The forehand was my first ever "cool" Frisbee throw I learned (all I knew was the backhand) and now I use it more often and am actual better with my forehand than my backhand.
What i think ultimate needs is its own pair of shoes. A cross between soccer shoes and basketball shoes would be awesome. The grip of soccer shoes for sprinting across grass, and the ankle support of basketball shoes for those high flying catches.
He just means use a wind shield over the microphone so that the wind doesn't drown out your good audio. Nice work on the videos!
I was taught to step out and not forward, I think because stepping forward would/could be straight into a mark. Stepping out changes a little bit of what youre talkin about with the momentum of your body. What do you recommend for a flick huck starting from a standstill??

@braud01 yea i can make a vid on pivoting
@xrev1 what do u mean?
@alwayslastinclass A huck is simply a long pass so a forehand huck is when you throw a forehand long.
When you say frolf disc I'm guessing you are talking about a disc golf disc, which is roughly the same weight, but a lot smaller. The motion is different and I would recommend to look up Avery Jenkins to see how to throw those the best!
Hey Brodie, I'm a high school ultimate player and working on my hucks. Great video btw, but I have one question. When you say to throw it IO, the curve actually switches in midair to OI..is that intentional? I've always wondered whether that is a good thing or a bad thing, as my complete IO backhand curves way too much to throw far, and my IO is really unstable. Is a mid-air curve switcher better for hucks?
@jrraiwin we will def make a low release vid
@brodiesmith21 a wind shield is an attachment for your microphone to cut out wind noise
Basically its a game of ultimate with two teams and a post or a soccer/football goal. If u play on a soccer pitch then u use the penalty box (but if u dont then u can use cones like in the vid) as a guideline where, on turnover, u have to work your way outside the box, then back in trying to score a point by throwing a disc to a teammate through the goal (with no netting) or post or watever u use :). Its a great way to practice zone defense. Oh also there is no out-of-bounds or out-of-play.
great vids....why don't u try to make an air bounce or pivot+flick(low shot)?
I'm sure someone has said this to you but if you want more ankle support in your cleats I would recommend trying football cleats. I've known some people who had support issues with their ankles and said using football cleats really helped.
Hey, when you release the disc are you using your fingers to generate a lot of the power or is it all wrist, i seem to only generate enough power when I push the disc off my inside fingers.
It appears they are playing Goaltimate, which I just learned about the other day. Sounds like a very fun game though if you don't have enough for Ultimate
@dumptrucks42 haha dont think so. Its easter
Brodie I don't play Ultimate Disc Golf, but I did find out how to do a power long drive for I used a different throwing method to what you show and I just hold the disc all down to the ground in the power grip with the thumb all inside the rim and just swing back with the arm and then snap the wrist all through straight toward the target to generate alots of spin but I also did run up when I did this throw.
And I was getting throws of over 230-260 feet max with this technique with the cheap recreational frisbees that I used. and I didn't have the proper smaller disc golf frisbees, but I was using bulkier heavier plastic stuff with the steeper rims. I did use the power grip but I launched the discs all inside out,
And I didn't launch the frisbee by flicking the wrist forward to snap it, I had the wrist all curled back behind me so the arm would then unwrap itself to unfold the wrist with the disc into the release.
+Griffin Coppola it doesnt matter he can leave a comment if he wants to
Wow, that was shot down in flames... Well I drive it different to how Brodie drives it. I found the 360 full turnaround drive gave the disc a bit more velocity.
With the normal run up drive. I had good grip on those recreation discs,. With the 360 turnaround drive, I got more velocity but not a good firm grip
on the disc. so i got more velocity but not more distance because the disc was launching sometimes too low down near the ground., the disc feels more heavier when launching with this full turn drive.
i had to watch it twice, mostly because i was wildly entertained by the goalty game in the background the first time
4:24...the prime example of a perfect flick...geez brodie haha
random but, are you guys taking a team to the goalty tournament in Atlanta next weekend? that would be sick.
gracias brodie. ! :D
Hey man nice vids,
Just a quick suggestion, keep using the slow mo clips as they are really useful but perhaps pause the clip to point out minor differences that create the correct technique and voice over them or label them to explain it.
amazing vid made me an amazing playyyeerrrr
could u maybe try to upload it again? I need this video! haha. thank you
so for the longer throws would you need to angle the disc more toward the ground so the air catches it more and gives it lift?
Are those the cleats you're selling on your brodiesmithvlog?
hey brodie, for a normal forehand throw can i use the same technique of the slanted disc. or is that only for a huck????????????
Brodie can you make another one of these videos because this one seems to be glitchy. My backhand is solid but i could work on my flicks
@ameliorate2695 great cleats love them!
You guy want to see how fast I can throw a forehand?
What distance are you comfortable putting on your forehand/ backhand. So as you know the pass will be completed more often than it wont and assuming there is no wind.
In volleyball, you usually step with your non-dominant foot to get maximum efficiency during an underhand-serve. What makes ultimate frisbee different?
Yo brodie do you recommend cocking the wrist back when doing this forehand huck?
@brodiesmith21 looking forward to OI flick huck. thx
When you're throwing a huck into the wind, do you put more IO on it?
Would there be a difference in the distance a flick would travel if you flick with your fingers split like a v on the inside lip of the disk than the way you grip Brodie?
Hey don't get me wrong throwing vids are hella sick but could we get any vids on cutting or catching or skying. THANKS BRO!!!
Brodie, can you make a website or a channel where people can record themselfs throwing a frisbee so you can correct the mistakes? I watched this video like 9 times and my frisbee still goes crazy. I need help.
***** true, but i need help on the thummer, the frisbee turns upside down too quicky
Danny Zheng If your forehand isn't good yet don't bother with a thumber. Practice your backhand and forehand and get them VERY good, then move on to the the hammer and get that VERY good, then mess with the other stuff.
Regarding the forehand (and any throw, really), practice practice PRACTICE. It took a month of practicing a couple hours a day with very good players correcting my form to get my backhand and (especially) forehand even a little bit decent. Work on throwing well (straight, accurate, and not wobbly at all) for medium and then short (short is actually harder than medium because you have to get good spin on it without throwing really hard) distances before you try to throw it very far. Throwing a frisbee is a really weird motion that most people have never done very much, because it doesn't appear in real life or even other sports. That means your muscles need to get used to the motion before you can throw it very far. When you get your medium and short throws down, then start to work on your long hucks.
Sorry about the wall of text, there's more to be said, but I'll leave it at that.
Good luck, be safe, and have fun!
Danny Zheng You need to practice throwing short distances before going long. OR, you can start trying to huck, and deal with throwing bad throws for a few days. While you throw the long ones, start contorting your body (and frisbee) before the throw to the opposite direction the frisbee falls after the throw.
When you find the right angle, it'll fly straight
+Danny Zheng It's not Brodie but it exists right here its called Practice Support it's free. ultimatefrisbee101.com/practicesupport.php
I think with the more controlled finesse your muscles do with a wrist flick (frisbee) than an overhead forearm flick (football) the faster you try to forehand a frisbee the less control you have with the release. I havent really tested this but it sounds like it makes sense! :-)
I would say more IO, I had the same problem and that seemed to help a lot.
Yes please. A 'how to throw a really fast forehand' video would be very nice.
@iamexcelsior unfortunately I have graduated...last year was my final year...but hoping the Gator boys take care of business
What do you guys mean re upload it? This is my FIRST time watching this on my pc i have no problems.
swishfish he has new subs and it would help them
@brodiesmith21 what does huck mean? whats the difference between a "forehand" and a "forehand huck"?
Anyone know why this video is freezing up? Just started doing this.
@iamexcelsior My video on how to throw in the wind is coming out soon
what song is that in the beginning? please reply I really like it
Thanks
Hey Brodie, I've been working on my forehand for the past few weeks (almost every day for about 30-45 minutes) and I just can't seem to get it right! I've watched your forehand tutorial at least a dozen times, but I can't really get any altitude, and it always wobbles..my hucks are even worse....how do I fix this? I'm 14 and I LOVE ultimate, but I just can't throw a good forehead for more than 5 yards. Any help would be greatly appreciated! God Bless!!
TH-cam is having issues every once in a while.. sometimes my videos cant even upload or my 1080p videos are really pixelated... your video is working fine for me now btw.
this guy is the MJ of frisbee. end of story. was born from the gods!!!
nice, very nice :)
Brodie im having some trouble with my forehand and i cant grt it to stay even. Any extra tips?
@simonhwang4 The more spin you put on the disc the less it will roll over during flight. If your throws are rolling over rather quickly, that's not really a problem if you learn how to compensate appropriately for it. However, what it means is that if you can improve the wrist snap (thus giving the disc more spin) you will be able to improve the range on your forehand huck significantly.
is a backhand pull better than a forehand pull? I've asked a couple people about it and alot of them said Backhand. or are they both the same just preference?
Brodie! I am having some trouble with this because whenever I try to throw it, the disc just doesn't get up for some reason. It might sound really stupid but for some reason it looks like I am just throwing it to the ground. It doesn't blade of anything it just goes to the ground. Is it because I need to angle myself up more? Or what could it be? Sorry if it sounds kind of stupid. Any help would be appreciated :)
Hey is it possible to throw a forehand really fast? I mean like a quarterback throwing a football. If its possible can you upload a video?
What kind a frisbee do you use to throw a long distance throw? Can you link me to a good frisbee? Thanks
Dude, my flick huck comes out as a low lazer instead of more up. is there anything that could help with that? It also really hurts my elbow and shoulder because that is where im adding the extra power. I think i may have just figured it out while typing but i need to use more of a core rotation and hips instead of my elbow and shoulder. I put my hucks up IO and i come straight back and straight forward on my windup while still breaking my wrist. do you have anyother helpful tips on that throw?
