  • No talk, just forging a knife. JFAK 2.
    1/4"" 1084 steel is forged into a small, full tang bowie. The finished knife will be at the beginning of the next JFAK video. I'm still working on forging plunge lines. Progress is slowed as elbow tendonitis has caught up with me at the age of 49. I can only fully hand about forge about one knife every 2 weeks at the moment.
    JFAK 1 being forged: • Just Forging A Knife 1...

    It's always fun and interesting watching your videos. But I miss your beautiful voice. The voice-over is a big part for me. But keep on doing your thing. I will always be watching them.

    I come to Green Beetle for knives and humor. Like I go to Shurap for knives and tea and spiced up billets.

    Nice to see i am not the only one to use a lot of Hammers.
    You can get a nice bird's beak handle by forging a shoulder at the handle and then drawing it out and down, keeping the stock wide at the handle. That was fun to watch.

    Lovely. Using your hammer and Anvil as much as possible to get the exact shape that you want is enjoyable and educational. You sure do use a lot of different hammers, nothing wrong with that. Thanks for the videos.

    I've been admiring your measured blows setting the bevels and plunge lines, and now you say you have tendonitis! Sorry it's slowing you down, but I've started slowing down and trying to get the most out of each blow in part because I think you've shown it's a good idea. Thanks!

    Yes, lots of different hammers here. My favorite square faced cross pean is missing. I usually use it and a dog head hammer for knife forging with an occasional rounding hammer. Until my favorite hammer is replaced, nothing feels right.

      My favorite is a cross pein made by old hickory forge. Just feels right in my hand

    The bog oak handle on the last knife turned out really good, a very elegant design so looking forward to your little Bowie. We'll call him 'Dave'
    Sorry to hear you're battling physically, sort of the curse of knife making in that by the time you git gud, the body begins to get beat up and at 50... yeah, I get it!

    Loving JFAK. Also interesting to see what the different hammers get used for, I work in auto body, so I'm a bit of a hammer connoisseur myself. Speaking of which, how come we haven't seen as much power hammer as we had in the past?

    definitely appreciate your work- been following for a few years- the narration videos are awesome for thought process- but just like FAK1 this is an awesome process series. Nice to see the tip development, the choil/ricasso division in process and the edge bevel in one model at one time- Bravo and sorry Im late to the party with these videos- Hit FAK3 first and had to watch the whole series. Would love to know if you would consider this series with drawknives and tools as well- Bravo again Beetle- keep swinging and stay safe!

    You say your progress on forging plunge lines is slow, but it still beats the brakes off my work.
    Also: You use quite a variety of hammers in your work. Some are pretty... oddball. I don't suppose you'd consider walking us through what you have, what you like/dislike and what you prefer to use each for?
    Essential Craftsman cited in a recent video there was a smithing saying "A change is as good as a rest" referring to hammers. Is it something like that for you? Or do you just like the variety?

    • @GreenBeetle
      @GreenBeetle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The square faced 3lb hammer w cross pean I used to use for profile, plunges and drawing out is missing. It used to be that hammer plus dog head hammer for bevels but now it’s vanished and I’m clamoring w 4 or 5 different hammers to get things done. A 4lb hammer for pointing the bar stock, flat side of a 3lb rounding hammer profiling/shaping, lightweight square for plunge and heel, dog head for bevel and spreading, cross pean side of lightweight square for handle belly plus rounding for handle belly. All that since I can’t find my good hammer 😞.

    • @redneksoldier2004
      @redneksoldier2004 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel your pain of missing "the good hammer." My favorite forging hammer has been missing for a couple of months. Being a fairly green, hobbyist smith, It's like starting all over again re-learning how to do everything.

    • @kassiog.6595
      @kassiog.6595 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      neither did i, but its a bowie that can be stored in a car glove box or glove compartment, i suppose

    • @GreenBeetle
      @GreenBeetle  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know what to call it. I never liked 'gentleman's bowie' or 'pocket bowie' and it's a full tang instead of hidden so I made up a name.

    • @nateand3
      @nateand3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a cool name and I liked Kassio G's logic. I was just curious of the history, but I guess it's history in the making. I love the size of it. I'd EDC that btch lol
