- Today i Wanted to Making A Video Just Solely About My Ash Lye Solution.
I do This Using My 4 Litre Pot.
I Fill my Pot with 1/3 Ash from hardwood and charcoal the un burnt black leftover charred wood in my Fire Place. i Started with a 1/2 and 1/2 ratio to make my 1/3 Ash total then add Rain Water to Fill the Pot. I Hope This Makes Sense. i did 3 Pots. i Used More White Ash in the 2nd Batch than Charcoal Just to see if this would make a Stronger Lye Solution Mix. So by all mean Experiment Friends. There is No Hard and Fast Rules here. I Then Brought my Solution to a Boil. Then Simmered it For Roughly 35 mins. you Can Do 40 mins. I Stirred the Ash every 4-5 mins. Then We Let our Solution Sit For 4-5 days. Then Strain Off the Charcoal and Ash. What is Left is Our Soaking Sllution for Amadou / Cattail Fluff / Punkwood etc If Anyone Has something Better. Any Ideas, Advice. Please Feel Free to Share in My Comment Section. I Hope This Helps People who cannot access Salt Peter to Nitrate there Flint and Steel Ignition Materials. Keep it Burning Whanau! 😝👊💥💥💥♨️♨️♨️🔥🔥🔥🪨🪨🪨😎🤘🌏🌏🌏🥝🥝🥝🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🌿🌿🌿💯💯💯

Nice. I didn’t know you used charcoal as well. I thought it was just the fine ash. Thanks for the tutorial 👍👍
Yeah with the fine ash you can make bars of hand soap as well.
I Think i Might go More Fine Ash next lot Don. Just See if There is A Difference. Do you have Cattails in Your Area or Horse hoof Fungus?
@@jasonedwardledburynewzeala9897 yeah Jason we have some cattails out back. There’s a lot of swamps in the area.
I’m following your experiment with this. I’m always interested in uncharred tinder for flint and steel.
I Like This Joe. Soaking Cattail, Punkwood. I am Trying 100% Cotton Fabric that i Would Normally Char. I Think Using Lye Your Materials Stay Reactive Longer. Thanks for Stopping By Brother.😎🤘🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲💯💯💯💥💥💥🔥🔥🔥🪨🪨🪨🪨
Do you have Cattails in your Area Joe?
Yes. We have plenty of them.
@@joesoutdoorplaces Thats Awesome. You should try this Joe. You will be converted.😝👊
The theory of the unintended invention of soap was at a place named Sapo Hill along the banks of the Tiber River that flows through modern and ancient Rome. Animal sacrifices were made to Roman gods and then the carcasses burned in bon fires. The animal fat melting mixed with the wood ash and being alongside the river there was water. The word "saponification" to describe how soap cleans and forms suds in water is thought to derive from the place Sapo Hill.
Awesome Info! Thanks Brother! 😊👍👏👏👏👏👏
Beautiful day. Jason heading into winter. Are you??

Our Winter is June thru to August
Thanks for sharing Jason. I do have a question about using hard wood. Does softer wood work but just not as strong a solution or does it not work at all?
I have No Idea Geof. Great Question Brother.I am Just Putting Together Basic Principles i Have Seen From The Bushcraft and Survival Community.Trying To Refine A More Consistent Method For Better Reactivity. You could Try and Experiment. Who Knows You Might Come Up With Something New! Out of the Box So to Speak.🤔🤔🤔 But I Believe The Majority Advocate For Hardwood Ash. I am Sorry i Couldn't Give You A More Definitive Answer. Again Great Question. Try Both.
I Have Just Done Some Research and NO! Soft Wood Doesn't have Enough Potassium in it. When Hardwood Tree's are Growing They Draw Potassium from the Ground. The Potassium Remain in The Ashes. Whereas Soft Wood Tree's don't contain enough Potassium. Just What i have recently read. I am no expert. So i am happy to be corrected by anyone on these new learnings. Hope that helps Geof.
That is an excellent tutorial mate. I am going to follow this, I've bought all the stuff, and have the materials and gear ready.
I love your idea of doing it economically but that isn't me.
American 2X4 is actually 1 and 1/2 inches by 3 and a 1/2 inches
