    I have a number of Pura Vida bracelets I've had for at least six years now - and I've even made a few of my own, but I was really grateful to see a tutorial on here so that I could improve my technique. Thanks so much for posting this! I want to make the new seed bead version as well, which, (as far as I can tell) involves unraveling the cord and using only one of the strands for the bracelet part, and then completing the rest of the bracelet normally. The specialty bracelets are so much more expensive!
    again, thanks!!

    love the video! Can I make these with regular friendship bracelet string?

    • @alyssa-ig4yn
      @alyssa-ig4yn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think so, but instead of melting (because you need wax on the string to have it melt) use clear nail polish or a drop of hot glue. it also wouldn't be waterproof without wax string.

  • @emilyforbes166
    @emilyforbes166 8 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Is there a way to get rid of the brown wax left over after you melt it?

    • @knackforknots
      @knackforknots  8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      +Emily Forbes Over time, the brown wax colouring has gone away a lot (I wear the bracelet I made in the tutorial almost every day!). My theory with this is that I let the string catch fire for too long, contributing to the discolouration of the string because it got so burnt. From my observations of the Pura Vida videos, they seem to be much more careful when they melt the wax, just barely letting the flame touch the string to melt the wax and seal the bracelet. This is definitely a technique I will need to improve on. Best of luck, and thank you so much for watching my tutorial! :)

    Thanks for this video, my daughter wants one of these and now I can make it for her. Can you clean off the dark from burning down the ends of the thread??

    • @knackforknots
      @knackforknots  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, I have found that you can scrape off a bit of the burnt parts of the ends. Another thing I found (which I learned after making this video) was to ensure that the strings are not submerged in the flame. Instead, I'd advise to keep the ends you are trying to melt close enough to the flame to melt it, but not in it. Best of luck! Thanks so much for watching!

    • @prevostflorida9728
      @prevostflorida9728 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't let the wax and cord flame. Just melt it an no black burnt color :)

    • @julijones506

      If you do accidentally burn the ends, try a nail file to buff off the dark part.

    Thanks so much for the video! I have made many string bracelets, (after purchasing Pura Vida) but could not figure out how to transition from the nine strands to the clasp ties without a huge knot. Is there a method to melt but not burn the wax? I am not fond of the blackend melted bits. Thanks again!

    • @knackforknots
      @knackforknots  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! Thanks so much for watching. To melt the ends, hold the string close to the flame (approximately 0.5-1 cm away) and do not submerge it. I definitely did not do this in the video 😅 Hope that helps!!

    • @knackforknots

      Hello Martha! Pura Vida uses Waxed Polyester cord! Cotton waxed cord does not withstand water and wear as well as polyester! Hope that helps :)

    I can’t make the twisted and stay twisted. I twist them and then they un-twist on their own. What am I doing wrong?

    • @knackforknots
      @knackforknots  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! When you are twisting the strands together, 1) make sure that they are being twisted in the same direction as the twist pre-existing in the cord and 2) make sure you are twisting each in the same direction. Hopefully that helps! Thank you so much for watching! :)

    • @julijones506
      @julijones506 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      After you twist both strands, instead of letting go of the strands to let them twist, let go of the bracelet while holding the ends of the 2 strands. That will allow them to twist MUCH better! Hope that makes sense! ❤️

    I love making my own bracelets and anklets! This design is so so cute. I was wondering if I wanted to make it for my ankle how much would I have to increase the lenght...any estimates? Also does it have to be wax string? Could it be just regular thread that is used for friendship bracelets? Thank so much!

    • @knackforknots
      @knackforknots  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I usually add 3 inches to the bracelet strands to make them into anklets! The ties and closure knot string should be the same.
      For the cord, I recommend the waxed polyester cord because it seals so nicely with the flame. Perhaps with some type of textile glue you'd be able to accomplish something similar with the friendship bracelet embroidery floss or craft thread? But I haven't tried it!
      Best of luck! Thanks so much for watching :)

    • @knackforknots
      @knackforknots  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Sherri! You can definitely use different types of cord, however, I am uncertain how well the waxed cotton or linen cords will melt (as I have not tried them myself). Perhaps carefully try a small test piece before starting. If it doesn't melt nicely, you can use a jewelry adhesive or perhaps clear nail polish to seal the ends instead. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching :)

    Very nice - I saw a video by beadsbaublesandjewels.com; the only thing done differently, which seems important to note, is that they used a mini torch, and did not put the ends right into the flame - just get it close enough to the heat to melt the ends, not burn them - and you won't be left with the black, burnt ends!

      I'd highly recommend using the waxed polyester cord. The cord melts nicely so you can seal the ends. If you choose to use other cord, you may not be able to seal the ends in the same way. Instead, you could use some textile/jewelry glue. However, I have not tried that myself.

      Hey, Mackenzie! If you don't use wax coated string, the ends of the string will just burn (ie. not melt/fuse together). An alternative is to seal the ends with a jewelry glue or some other waterproof glue!

    I'm stuck with something. I'm at the part of doing the braids at the ends for the ties. I twisted each string and then twisted them together. Then I tied the knot, but then it comes unraveled and it's just two strings with a knot at the end. How can I fix this?

    • @knackforknots
      @knackforknots  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. Make sure that you are twisting the cords in the same direction. When you are twisting, it's also important to make sure they are going in the same direction as the pre-existing twist in the cord. Hopefully this will work out for you 🙂 thanks so much for watching! • @knackforknots
      @knackforknots  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your question! You can leave them poking out if you wish, although I cannot state how the bracelet will hold up to wear over time. Make sure the knots are really tight around each of the ends. In addition, the unsealed ends of the square knot adjuster will likely come undone easily - you may have to cut a longer piece for the last step and get creative with adding more knots to ensure it stays secure. Hope that helps! 😊
