    I worked for GM and watched this being loaded in London and then the take-off. Can't believe it made it off the ground.

    And after all the effort to fly this engine over, and take it by road into Dublin, it ended up in storage 15 years later along with nine others (202, 203, 204, 205, 210, 211, 212, 213, 214) because they're not push/pull capable so cannot be used on the Intercity Mk4 or Enterprise.

      Yes and Irish Rail bring back quality intercity mk3 or mk4 rather than the uncomfy noisy 22k trams

  • @oceanfroggie
    @oceanfroggie ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent video. Gas looking at all the excited suits with their one day ramp passes. Not a high vis jacket in sight. :) Its a national scandal that half of these locos were left to rot in the rust line at Inchicore when there were only 15 years old, and the 071s being overhauled and kept in service after 45 years to haul the freight traffic. Irish Rail's policy of 22k DMUs puts an end to the era of proper intercity service. As soon as the CAF mk4 sets are retired business travellers will switch back to the new faster motorways or air. The 22k trams don't cut the mustard for quality intercity travel.

      @@geraldwalsh6489 22k are noisy as engine is under the floor, uncomfy firm seats, no hot food anymore. Yes they look modern a bit like the Luas in Dublin, but not comfy for a 2-3hr across country intercity trip. Comfort bareable for a short commuter run, or say the Limerick shuttle which is short. But 3.5hrs Dublin to Tralee one would need to see a chiropractor or osteopath after putting ones back through that ordeal, and the 3hrs of never ending hum and vibration. Prefer the NoX spewing diesel engine away at front or behind coaches in a loco hauling or pushing comfy mk3 or mk4 coaches.

      @@gerryconmy Thank you for posting such an interesting video. You would know more then I but I think it's very rare for locomotives or other railway rolling stock to be moved by road. Back in the day locomotives and railcars were delivered by ship to Dublin Port and run in from there to inchicore via railway. I'm reading Irish Rail intend to buy new Dart railcars over the next few years. If that's true it will be intresting to see where they'll come from and how they'll get here.
      It must have been difficult being the load master on the Antonov and the ALE truck. Also the truck driver

      Hi locomotive 201 was flown to Dublin Airport because GM said they wanted to test and set the computer on the loco before the rest of the fleet arrived by ship at Dublin Port and transport by rail to Inchicore works. Don't know where the next batch of Darts will arrive or port will have to wait and see.
