This is one of the tracks I turn to when I need a musical pick-me-up and a laugh thanks to the bloopers 😉But I can't wait until you get to their real collective musical masterpieces, most especially "Telegraph Road" from the live Alchemy tour, which like most of their tracks, was written and composed by lead singer and guitarist Mark Knopfler: The emotional nuances, compositional complexities and transitions, and inspired story-telling of Telegraph Road is akin to a thirteen-minute rock symphony, and it also highlights the band's classically trained pianist Alan Clarke (it should divest you of the notion that Dire Straits was 'less complex,' based on this short 'for fun' track). Moreover, you cannot appreciate Mark's finger-plucking genius, his unique tone and phrasing, and his almost singular ability to make a guitar weep until you see him perform "Brothers in Arms", live from 'On The Night'. I would also suggest you explore the other performances from Alchemy live, including but not limited to "Romeo and Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Once Upon a Time in the West" and "Tunnel of Love". I happen to be a classically trained musician myself, and I can say without hesitation that you need to dive a little deeper into their rich catalogue -- and Marks subsequent solo albums and musical scores -- before you can reasonably pass judgement on the quality of the work. Enjoy the journey.
