  • Welcome to episode 2 of chatty knitting with Claire ❣️. I'm embarking on an (almost) no stash challenge and have decided not to buy any yarn for, at the very least, 6 months.
Today we're discussing the organisation and systems I'm putting in place to ACTUALLY knit through my (way too big for me) yarn stash 🌷.

Hi Claire! I was attracted to your video because of your yarn buying ban! I am not a minimalist, but I am trying to learn to lean into it. I am also overwhelmed by my stash, which has been building for over 20 years. When covid started, I challenged myself to either get rid of excess yarn or just knit it up. As you might guess, I just could not make myself part with a most of it, and I have been knitting ever since. I gathered my yarn from the many different places I had been storing it, and filled 2 very large plastic tote boxes. I was ridiculously proud this summer when I was able to cram almost all the yarn into one tote box, the largest. I must admit, it doesn't really fit.The the sides bulge. Still pleased. Since I began this journey in early 2020, I have only bought a few skeins of yarn as needed for particular projects or gifts. My goal is to knit down my stash and just buy yarn as needed in the future.
I feel it says a lot about our society that so many of our problems are problems of excess, such as buying too much, owning more than we may feel comfortable with, not knowing how to deal with the extremes of excess we accumulate. Bravo to you, and to so many of us who are recognizing this as an issue, and who are willing to accommodate new ways of thinking!
I really like hearing about your journey, your storage, organization, and inventory ideas. It will help me step up my own game!
And greetings from Pennsylvania, in the NE USA!

I am also embarking on a no-buy with similar rules to yours. I will only buy yarn (or floss for cross stitching, thread for sewing, etc) if I absolutely need it to complete a project. I detail my yarn stash on a spreadsheet which keeps track of the stash at the beginning of the year, acquisitions within the year, and used up/completed. For the past 2 years, I have ended up the year with the same or even more stash than the previous year. My 2023 goal (which has already begun!!) is to end up the year with 1/3 less. I have 299 balls of yarn, so I need to use/give away/sell/donate 100 balls. I have a list of projects I plan to do along with a list of stash-busting ideas to use up those bits and pieces (and minis). I would love to see how your no-buy year progresses! Good luck to everyone who is attempting this!

Good luck with your no buy! I've been on a no buy for clothing, books and makeup for the last 2 years and whilst there have been some tough moments where I felt like I was missing out at the time, I honestly couldn't tell you now what those things were that in the moment I "had to have". Overall it's had a positive effect on my mental health (and bank balance!) and it's shown me that I had more self control than I thought I did.

Wow congrats, that's awesome! Definitely, things that appear as "must haves" at first generally really aren't in the long term 🌸

Good ideas and rules! I started a yarn buy ban a little bit before I discovered your channel via that first yarn ban video. So far I didn't buy any yarn, until now, but there is a good reason: I'm travelling for 1,5 months and I finished my fingering weight "travel project" too quickly! So I bought 3 skeins for a sweater that I'm already working on. :) During this time I have also listed which patterns I feel inspired to make from my stash yarn when I get back home, and I'm so happy that I feel inspired with them :) one more rule that I have is that I can't attend test knitting for patterns that I would have to buy the yarn. I didn't have the rule and noticed that I have to buy a new sock yarn and I wouldn't like to buy it but I can't let the designer down. Anyway, happy to follow your journey and share experiences! 😊

I am glad to have discovered your podcast and found this episode especially interesting. I set an intention back in October to knit from my stash and not purchase any yarn for a year. Having recently packed up everything for a move from one home to another, I realized that my yarn stash is not quite as modest as I thought. I don't consider it depriving myself, but instead, I'm appreciating all the lovely yarn I already have. I will be following your journey for inspiration and camaraderie.

I feel like we never truly realise how much we own until we take it all out. And it's exactly that, I feel like I'm finally appreciating what I already have and not constantly waiting for the next thing 💕

For 8 months now I am limiting my yarn buying and it feels great. I have bought some yarn, but only a little bit, and have used tons from my stash. Right now I am really into gift knitting and I'm finding purpose for so many different yarns, it's wonderful! I'm looking forward to my journey onward with more intentionality and creativity :))

Buying some premium yarn for giftknitting for my daughter helped me to stop buying on drops sales this month. I litteraly counted how much did I spend on my stash and understood that I'm wealthy enough to buy better yarn just not smart enough 😉😂 Second helpfull thing was Retro Claude's video in wich she countes how much time she need to use up what she collected. I don't have that big of a stash but deciced that every time when I conquere the urge of buying new yarn for my imaginery life with unlimited time for knitting I will put some money (aroud 1 euro) in my pig bank. I'm really interestet how much it will be after a year.
I also observed that buying yarn was a coping mechanism in front of stress caused by political and economical challanges we are facing this year in Poland.
That beeing said, I do not regret buying so much yarn this year. I did it for the first time and learned a lot about yarn types, color preferances and hopefully found my Yarn sweet spot, wich is just a little less than I currently have.
If you'll need any help with finding budget friendly and easy to setup lights for this winter, let me know (it may be just above 20 euro for a small room like yours).
Last but not least, I find your videos very soothing and inspiring at the same time. Looking forward many more in the future!

I have just discovered your channel and it has inspired me. I am bed ridden due to 4 major brain tumour surgeries and my yarn was all over the place. My morning carer came in and she sorted out a lot of it. I am now winding up small, tangled bits that will be perfect for granny squares. We still have a long way to go, but I am enjoying looking at what we accomplished this morning.
I shall go and look at your other videos now.

Good an and good rules. I am starting a no-buy myself. I have a goal to knit through half my stash during 2023. Knowing that this is my goal helps me to not want to buy more yarn, since it would add to the pile!

I am trying to slow down my buying to a minimum and knit as much as possible from stash.
I also have entered my stash in Notion, using Julie Miette's template (it's a really great template for entering your projects, yarn, patterns etc, I really recommend it, it's on her channel).
Would be so interested in seing your progress in videos !

I've done a no buy period before and it's quite difficult to not buy yarn due to the amount of sales, the advertising everywhere, even looking at a new pattern on Ravelry and liking the yarn can make you want to buy it. 😅I'm considering a no buy year next year because I recently splurged for the first time in awhile due to the Black Friday sales....definitely need to use up my stash before I run out of space.

No buy doesn't actually mean not buying yarn😁🧶🧶justifying buying is so interesting, psychologically. It all depends on why we collect or use wool, fabric, paints etc. I can see you're formulating a thesis or psychological profiling knitters 😁 so interesting to watch

  • @knittingEillets

Wow, that is some stash! :-D I generally (of course there are exceptions) only buy yarn with a fix project in mind. I think that means, that I pay a bit more, because I have more small orders... but well I don't want to start buying yarn with no project in mind, just not to build a stash... I do though buy in general more yarn than I need for a project. I kind of panic, that I will not have enough... so I often have leftover skeins (full ones). So I want to make a scrab yarn blanket (memory blanket?) with those. I'm very interested to see, how your project will go!

    • @SeptemberMakes
      @SeptemberMakes  ปีที่แล้ว

You might end up spending less than people (like me) who would just buy yarn because it's pretty and end up not using it. The blanket is such a good idea 🌸

Good luck with your challenge! I'm trying to do the same thing, though I've said that in the past too. Maybe social media accountability could help me too. I've always said my stash needs to fit within a certain cabinet, bit I recently found it has expanded beyond that. So I'm not buying, and focusing on one project at a time. And my biggest rule for myself is that I cannot buy yarn unless I've already got a pattern in mind, and would knit it right away. Which means it'll be awhile since I have so many yarns and projects I already have and want to make.

Arrivera-t-elle à résister aux soldes de chez drops ou holst ? Combien de boîtes de chaussures restera-t-il ??
