I saw this quote somewhere and it really stuck with me. “If life is a never ending loop of dirty dishes and laundry then that means life is a never ending loop of home cooked meals and comfy clean clothes” it really helped reframe the guilt of not being 100% tidy all the time
My mum was constantly telling me that the way I was washing my clothes was affecting the longevity of their lifespan, 2020 was the year I really started taking it seriously. When we stopped using clothes softener my daughter's eczema all but disappeared. I still wash the majority of her clothes on the allergy wash setting (60°c) but our clothes feel softer and have benefited from me stopping all the 90°c washes. Separating colours has stopped whites getting dingy and my vintage sweater collection has bounced back since I started delicate/ hand washing cycles 😅 My biggest tip is to button your button ups and zip up your hoodys before you wash them so they don't get pulled and stretched in the washing machine.
I had a hard time with feeling like not being tidy was a moral failure as well. I'm not sure who/what changed my perspective, but at one point I heard that "untidiness means that a place is *lived* in. Seeing my place untidy reminds me that I am *home* ." I still have troubles with clutter, but now when I see a slight untidiness in the house, I feel gratitude and a 'home sweet home' kind of vibe. I hope this helps others as well!!
I'm happy to hear your well dressed cat is doing well after a health scare. Our family lost our tuxedo cat to cancer in August, so I agree that 2024 was the hardest for a lot of everyone. Here's hoping for a much more relaxed year
I love that you point out that it's okay to have one room that is messy. I get a lot of comments from my family about untidiness, I prefer the idea that it's just lived in
Resets and times to give yourself a fresh start are so so good! I am really looking forward to this series. For clothing overwhelm- I separate mine into seasons- sometimes it's not about temperature, but about color/ seasonality. I "audit" the clothes when the season shifts and I'm putting away last season's clothing. I get the dopamine rush of getting "new" clothes that I haven't seen or worn in awhile without purchasing anything. For tidying I made a schedule because I was sick of spending my weekends cleaning, so each day of the week has a few tasks. Clearing off the dresser could be one of those for you? That's how I've made some of my tidying more of a habit, because you're right, it's not about buying a "solution", it's about creating a habit to clean regularly. With crafts, it really is an issue of tidying at the end of each session. With pottery you have to, because of all the wet clay, but with sewing I've let my space explode or get way out of hand, so I try to put things in order (not necessarily away) when I know I'm done for the day. I LOVE how you've organized your yarn- super pretty! An immaculate home isn't my goal- I think that kind of aesthetic perfectionism is an externalization of the kind of body perfectionism that social media promotes- and notice who is targeted to conform to "perfection"- women! For me, too much visual clutter disrupts my thinking and makes me anxious, but my spaces are by no means "perfect". PS- separating whites from darks is really only necessary if the dye in the fabric bleeds. If you're buying mostly 2ndhand, or you have washed a garment multiple times, the dye shouldn't be bleeding/ transferring anymore, so no need to separate. This is nuanced if you have vintage items, but hopefully helps!
Well, white and bright clothes can take a bit of bleach and profit from it (yellow stains don’t stay as easy, bleach kills bacteria on underwear and stuff like cloth diapers, napkins…) while blacks and dark colors might loose more of their color with it - so it does make a difference long term. I might do a mixed laundry occasionally but never with whites or newer clothes.
Shelby when I was a child, the few times I pulled clothes off hangers by the neck (not knowing it would stretch them), I got scolded so harshly that now, every time I handle hangers, my body tenses up. So I totally get you when it comes to separating white clothes from dark ones. I think it was really unfair that they made you wash everyone's laundry in the house. I'm glad you don't have to do that anymore and can now relax in your beautiful home with your girlfriend and your cat
The look of joy on your face when you revealed the pressed flowers put a smile on my face. Glad it worked so well! I had tried and failed to press flowers. Maybe I should give it another try.
Careful washing is a part of my relationship with my clothes, which helps me be happier with less. Washing clothes carefully can make them last longer AKA increase sustainability! So, yeah, learn about fabric care, separate by weight and color, use oxy detergent in warmer water, but colorful clothes wash better in colder water etc. Also, I download Indyx thanks to you, and that helps me plan outfits without taking stuff out then having to put it back AKA less tidying required yay!
A reset that I personally need, being a stay at home mom, is to reconnect with friends and family that I haven't had time for. I need to be intentional about checking in and making the effort to meet up in 2025. So that's the list I'm making!
I love organizing! I love watching organizing! My biggest tip is to separate through the seasons and for me, it’s a separation of color/material when it comes to sweaters and dresses. I live in Arizona and it’s very hot here but supermarkets and sometimes people like to live in an ice box and I have sweaters for summertime. I also like that when the seasons change and I go through my stored clothes, they feel brand new. I also suggest that you put all the clothing that you have plans to craft with away separately and more accessible then the seasonal in case there’s a random day you wanna start that project. I also have a saying that every single item in your home should have its own home and when you are done using that item and you put it in its home then you should stay organized and always be able to find what you need. Good luck and I’m so excited that you’re sharing your journey with us😁 One last thing, and I add this because I have trouble with this. If you feel that some kind of organized tool will help you get organized and stay organized, don’t let the guilt of buying it new discourage you. If you’ve created a good system, you most likely will use it forever.
So excited for this series!! I'm doing a low buy this year as well and really trying to stay on top of cleaning and organizing. These types of vids are so motivating!
1. I grew up in a separating colors household and I haven’t ever since I moved out. 3 years clean of that! lol I just find it unnecessary in my experience and so hard to fill up the washer if so. 2. My cat adores puffer jackets too! 3. I think spaces that look lived in and loved is so much more refreshing than something perfect! I think I need more storage, then I remind my self that pulling out a drawer is still to hard. Your home is so cute and looks like it tends to your needs and not others :)
I do separate in lights, darks, hot wash and wool / handwash. In Germany full detergent has a bit of bleach to kill bacteria and prevent whites from becoming yellows ;) so I of course wash black or darker colors with a different detergent. I only wash with less circling and of course line dry to make my clothes live longer. I feel like the only person in the world who actually enjoys doing laundry. I love sorting it when I hang it up, I like feeling the clean fabrics taking it down, especially in summer when they dry in the garden, I enjoy folding it, looking for little holes / seams to repair and putting them away. It’s my favorite chore. Don’t do big resets in the new year. I try to do them before vacancies or holidays to be able to rest afterwards. I only set up a calendar (last year I tried to go fully digital - didn’t work).
I have used blueland for years for not only laundry but cleaning and the dishwasher. Love it. I put the tabs in first then clothes. I also separate by lights and darks it makes a difference
You guys have such a beautiful home and little kitty! ❤ I enjoy this content so, so much! It’s really inspiring. Also, I’m glad I’m not the only one that can’t bring myself to move the cutest little sleeping babies around the house. 😊 it’s so funny to me that people think eco-loving people live in tents, or things of that nature. Finding and thrifting beautiful vintage pieces, be clothing or decorations, is so exhilarating and last for so long. I just hate that it’s going extinct… thank you for always being here for us! ❤❤❤
For the Jewelry that seems to land in that room, maybe have a small secondary place where you can place them in that room especially if they are something frequently worn, but you take them off as you change in the room giving yourself a reprieve from the idea that everything has 1 spot it can go mindset helps. Provided they're not a super expensive piece that's best to be stored somewhere safe.
I just did my "digital" reset (or at least the bulk of it) for the beginning of the new year. I'm pulling together all my files (from my computer, phone, iPad, and flash drives) and sorting what I want to keep into the correct folders and getting everything backed up. I took time to sit down and sort through all my photos from 2024 and delete the blurry ones / duplicates/ old screenshots I don't need. On average, about 2/3 of photos for each month get deleted. I finally finished migrating my huge "watch later" list from Notion -> Anytype, and added any new movies / shows + tagged/ linked to where I can watch them. I have all the little paper "notes" I want to type into the computer collected, and I just need to sit down with some good music and punch those in next. There are a few odds and ends left to do, but I already feel /way/ better knowing all of that information is where I need it to be and backed up : )
I don't separate my clothes by color to wash since most of my clothes are black. I do separate them by what cycle I use in the washer (gentle, normal, etc).
To wear a bonafide sweater, it's probably going to be 40 degrees F or below. If it's warmer than that, I'm probably wanting more layers anyways so the sweater by itself isn't enough and more layers with it is too much. Once it drops below 40 it's probably time to start thinking about thicker coats anyways, so a sweater is nice. Hello from Indiana.
Every new year new start, your videos help me focus & stay true to my values. So thrilled & excited for your restart. I'm on this journey with you. I love the list you started. On mine I included spiritual practice, yoga, and self care activities. This is my year to simplify. & Shelbi I'm with you on the sweaters. Living in Vegas I rarely ever need a sweater. lol. I haven't worn my LL Bean coat in 6 years. & Blueland laundry tabs are the bomb-diggity! Love those! Hugs from Vegas!
Where I live it rarely ever gets above 70°F (21°C), so it rarely ever getting below that is so hard to imagine😅 That's why for me it needs to be well below 40°F for a good chunky sweater, anything above that calls for a thin cardigan paired with a rain jacket! (Yup, I never leave the house without the rain jacket...)
I live in Kansas City and i have a couple different weights of sweater. A real big chunky wool blend sweater it needs to be COLD but i also have some lighter weight knit sweaters that are cotton or linen blends and I will wear those starting around 60
For 2025 I am planning to continue to declare out the house. What works for me is a small areas at the time and just going consistently through the entire house. But what’s even more important don’t bring more stuff in so I am doing low buy. My rule is $200 per month for non-essential items.
i almost never separate my laundry, UNLESS the whites are looking dingy i'll do a special load. i also don't fold, it gets thrown in the drawer because i want to live my life. i live in maine and don't own that many sweaters, but i have lots of cardigans instead, for me it has to be below 40 all day to wear a sweater, because going between the house, outside, office, i know i'll get hot.
This is me cleaning the sink down every time I do anything in it because of childhood 😅 also I still sort my clothes by color because my mom told me to do it. Now my partner does our laundry so out of sight, out of mind 🎉
There is great person on maybe Instagram, I see her videos on Facebook and TH-cam but they are shorts. She does Mori style, lots of layering and she is a real person sized person
This is a question I feel like you could answer, how do you get rid of underwear, socks, and bathing suits in a ecofriendly way? Usually I just throw them away but I’ve always been curious on if there’s a better way!
Hi all, I LOVE LOVE LOVE thrifting clothes BUT I am scent allergic , and most thrifted clothes smell like scented laundry products: sometimes I can soak cotton clothes in vinegar for a few days and get the smell out, any more advice on this? thanks everyone
Leaving clothes outside in the sun and rain can also be helpful, as is the heat of the dryer though that does put fragrance into the house I find. For me I find vinegar soaks most helpful, even with a bit of soap. My system is usually 24H vinegar soak followed by a wash and dry. I'll sometimes pour vinegar directly onto the item in the dryer. If 3 cycles of this doesn't take the scent away I'll abandon clothes outside and hope for the best if it's warm enough, though maybe freezing would be helpful? I just thrifted clothing a few weeks ago, making sure to smell them in the store. Even with me not being able to detect any fragrance with my nose right up to them, I was only able to make half of them safe to wear at this point.
As someone with ADHD the key for jewelry and hair ties is to put it away right when you take it off. Dont put it down. Put it away. People are always surprised with how clean I am bc they assume my place would be as chaotic as I seem with ADHD.
The concept of cataloging everything is so overwhelming, I think I would end up getting rid of a lot so that I didn't have to enter it in! hahaha A Hoarder's heart recently did a video where she had listed out everything that entered her home in a month, I think it would be interesting to see that from someone who is much more conscious and less of a consumer. Also The Minimal Mom has an inventory sheet if you want that resource.
4:41 I used to have to fold my moms thongs (which my dad called butt floss💀) as a child and she had such a specific way of folding such a small piece of clothing that now I just chuck all my underwear unfolded in a drawer. Now that my mom is gone though, folding thongs is a fond memory 😂😢 I would recommend separating at least your lightest whites, creams, and greys because otherwise they do get grey faster over time!! I’d also never wash something dark red or dark blue with white, it almost always stains the white pink or blue and just isn’t worth it for me because I declutter dingy light coloured clothes faster that way.
Your sweater discussion gave me a big A Ha Moment. We're moving to San Antonio later this year from the pacific northwest and I'm pretty sure 90% of my wardrobe is sweaters or hoodies or flannels. I'm clearly NOT going to need all of that when we move. Any tips on figuring out what someone would need when moving to a vastly different climate?
Dang girl you’re working!! So many vids! Not a complaint 😂 Please know lots of us would pay subs for you on here too! I’d be happy to throw you $5 or $10 a month on here and I’m sure there are others too. Just something to consider!!
that is so sweet! I have thought about the sub feature a lot but I would just want it to feel worth it and I struggle to think of how I would make it worth it, ya know? But I appreciate that so much!!
I'm hoping to ease myself into cold plunging this year but I HATE getting water in my ears so I won't be jumping haha but I admire everyone who does that!
I know it’s not what most people like to hear but I have found most of the time I can’t keep organized it’s because I have too much stuff. I really love the book New Minimalism because it’s realistic about keeping what you love and caring for it and addresses different reasons for having a lot rather than the nonsense of only wearing black and living in a shell of a house. I’ve thinned to where I can really love and regularly see what I have and it makes me so much happier
For me, I only wear a sweater if it's -20 C, I take hormones that mess with my heat regulation and I know I'll absolutely sweat to death if it was too warm for a sweater lol. Also, I sometimes wear kandi so that keeps my arms warm enough.
Does anyone also wonder if there is a disorder similar to that of orthorexia (the excessive preoccupation with eating healthy food) in the realm of anti-consumption? Something like, the excessive preoccupation with *products* and ethical consumption?
Shelby, I don't know if you've answered this before but ...do you have a brand or type of cat litter you recommend? I know there are some environmental concerns with traditional kitty litter and I'd like to use something that is less impact full it such a product exists. Thank you! Also a video on eco-friendly and pro-environmentalist pet products would be an awesome idea!
For New Years reset ideas (and anything life admin), I love muchelleb on youtube! She is constantly mentioning new ways of following through on goals etc and I like using her content as a launching off point - plus she is also minimalistic in her life and aesthetic so she has some of the same value alignments as you and a lot of your audience!
just a thought: maybe you're asking too much of yourself. You mentioned that you're kind of traumatized having to fold underwear for X Y reason. So let's say, that as a result you don't like to fold, SO DON'T. Just put them in a basket. At least, you sort your underwear or socks or whatever. Same for your crafts, just specific baskets to keep them sorted and away and not invading but not drawers or little shelves or ... that require more time and rigidity? Hope that helps because you help me a lot with motivation for sustainability! Take care!
Shelby, why not put the folded sweaters in the top of the closet? It's prime sweater weather and they seem inaccessible tucked away in the totes like they are hibernating.
it's actually just barely getting to sweater weather here. As you can see I'm wearing shorts & a t shirt haha. But I don't really have a better place to put them since I don't want to hang them. But I def should have switched some more of my stuff out when I was organizing.
How come you don't separate clothes by color when washing? I have never heard of not doing this, and when Googling I can't find anything. Won't they be discolored?
For the New Year, I’m making a bingo card. I have a bunch of small things listed, like “read a book from the library,” “go to a concert,” “go on a hike.” When I get bingo, then I’ll celebrate and treat myself to something (that’s TBD). For laundry, I sort by fabric types. Jeans or towels should not be washed with delicate shirts. The rough fabrics will wear on the delicate fabrics and contribute to pilling and damage.

I’ve been WAITING for a declutter from you! I’ve watched your old declutter videos so many times for motivation 😅
Love this series so much! I have a 6 week winter break, so I’ve been deep cleaning and organizing my space too ❤
The image of you taking Tippi for a walk in a stroller is really tickling me 😂❤ great job on the declutter
Love reset content! Can’t wait to hear what you think of the detergent tabs once you’ve been using them for a while
Watching this while cleaning 🧼🪥 my kitchen. Evening 🌆 cleaning 🧼
I'm glad your cat is okay❤

I don’t separate lights and darks but I do light fabrics and heavy fabrics (like jeans) just to prevent extra wear on the light fabrics.

For 2025 I am planning to continue to declare out the house. What works for me is a small areas at the time and just going consistently through the entire house. But what’s even more important don’t bring more stuff in so I am doing low buy. My rule is $200 per month for non-essential items.
I have that same little green purse, I thrifted it too! 💚
I need it to be below 40° to wear a real sweater. I live in southeast Virginia, but grew up in upstate New York.
WE LOVE A RESET
i almost never separate my laundry, UNLESS the whites are looking dingy i'll do a special load. i also don't fold, it gets thrown in the drawer because i want to live my life. i live in maine and don't own that many sweaters, but i have lots of cardigans instead, for me it has to be below 40 all day to wear a sweater, because going between the house, outside, office, i know i'll get hot.
I do separate light from dark. It’s noticeable, whites get less white if you wash them what is the color.
No folding socks or underwear tho😂😂
As someone with ADHD the key for jewelry and hair ties is to put it away right when you take it off. Dont put it down. Put it away.
People are always surprised with how clean I am bc they assume my place would be as chaotic as I seem with ADHD.
I don't fuss too much over my laundry, but at a minimum separating whites/lights keeps them looking brighter and nicer for longer.
I heard somewhere that we used to separate color loads because the technology for fabric dyes and detergents wasn't what it is now.
Yes, please body double with us so we can also get our lives together this year!
The concept of cataloging everything is so overwhelming, I think I would end up getting rid of a lot so that I didn't have to enter it in! hahaha
A Hoarder's heart recently did a video where she had listed out everything that entered her home in a month, I think it would be interesting to see that from someone who is much more conscious and less of a consumer. Also The Minimal Mom has an inventory sheet if you want that resource.
I live in MD, 60 is still shorts and T-shirt weather 😂 it’s gotta be like 40 or less for me to wear a sweater, those look so cute though!
I separate my washing into pastels, whites, coloureds and blacks.
I like how they are tabs and not pods.
I live in Ohio, I normally break out sweaters when we hit the 40s, and my heavy sweaters (wool) in the 20s.
Not a complaint 😂
Please know lots of us would pay subs for you on here too!
Wait, when did you switch from using Dropps for laundry?!
I do not separate clothes lol. Other than my hisbands clothes are 1 load and mine are another. We also don't wear a lot of white/light colors
I wear sweaters around 60 but mine are all cotton, so not heavy, I live in SoCal and I have 7 sweaters. But that is all is wear Nov-feb. ❤
I liked the Taylor Swift reference. ❤
Go jump in Barton Springs for the perfect New Years reset! We do it every year and it always gets the new year off to a good start.
I'm hoping to ease myself into cold plunging this year but I HATE getting water in my ears so I won't be jumping haha but I admire everyone who does that!
For jewelry how about using your top drawer with small boxes/ containers/ small dishes that I am sure you have around the house??
Works well for me.
We separated on color and heating, but I dont as an adult - all clothes goes in 30 c, towels and beddings in 60 c
I wear sweatshirts in the summer.. sweaters? 70? Idk. I live in Utah. Cooooold winters.
I’m reading the book Fatal Conveniences right now… you should check it out!
Do you have a DIY recipe for an oxy boost?
I always separate my clothes based on colour 😂
just a thought: maybe you're asking too much of yourself.
Is that an oura ring?! 👀👀
it is! I hate that I love the stupid little thing LOL
love the content and the message! I also love the uncanny valley AI thumbnails but in like, a dystopian allegory way
For way to long into the video I thought that the pocket area where the bed is was a mirror and when you reached into it it threw me for a second
Anyway always love your videos ❤
LOLOLOL it is a weird set up and difficult to perceive on a screen but that you for sharing it made me laugh haha
How come you don't separate clothes by color when washing? I have never heard of not doing this, and when Googling I can't find anything. Won't they be discolored?
If you wash on cold fabrics tend to bleed less! It really only matters for white whites then.
I have never separated by color ever. I do towels separately, but that’s it. I’ve never had a problem.
do you still use dropps at all? or has your opinion on them changed?
For a proper sweater? In the 30s or lower. I’d perish wearing one in 60 degree weather
I suggest only having three lists with three items on each one.
Omg am I first 😀
Doing a closet clean out as this posts like ok blessed 🤌 organizing with Shelbs today don’t text 😆❤️
