Janet and Mariah are the queens of background vocals and musical excellence. In my opinion, they have the best catalogues of any female artist, maybe because they also write.
Queen of harmonies and vocal arrangement, periodT. She may not sing like Aretha, Whitney, or Mariah but Janet is still up there with the legends. Pulling vocals off the way she does requires so much skill, precision, control, and impeccable ear for music that I find it preposterous Janet is constantly thought of as lacking in the vocal department. Just because someone has a naturally soft singing voice doesn’t mean their instrument is in some way inferior to stronger ones.
And she never sounds like she’s trying too hard, it just seems to flow out naturally and soothing as if she just keeps replaying the tracks and adding a bit more each time
Also people downplay Janet’s main vocal too But when they try and sing a Janet song it becomes hard for them bc she is strong and firm in that higher register So her voice might not be “fuller” bc it doesn’t have a lot of bottom end (I know Janet can go low but her vocal timbre consists mostly of bright and clean tones from higher frequencies) BUT girl sings down in that high region

Now range does not define wether somebody is a good singer or not, but I believe Janet has proved time and time again that she knows how to utilize her voice and well. Just to remind some of you, janet got a lot of vocal harmony practice with her family, she sang on some of Michael’s earlier songs ( PYT) is one and they all sang with her on her earlier projects and wrote for her, so janet still carries the Jackson sound. I think Jimmy & Terry really nailed the layering of vocals with Janet.
I wish she would release an acapella album of her past hits . So many of her songs are vocally masterclasses and the harmonies get overlooked because of the flashy beats .

And a lot of people forget that Janet learned so much by watching her brothers and dad being in the studio's with them early on and also took what she learned to the studio with Jimmy and Terry....so she's a veteran at what she does...The thing that people hold against Janet and don't give her credit for is her own individuality. When the comparisons to her and MJ and also her being a black female in an industry where men control women, Janet was not that one and so that's why she's isn't given the credit by some and criticized by others....She is the poster child for female empowerment, overcoming all of the critics and naysayers.
