  • I took the Rivian R1S to Hungry Valley SVRA to explore its capabilities and to start learning the skills for off-roading. The Hungry Valley SVRA has a 4X4 practice area which has a decent set of obstacles for all levels of difficulty. Aside from the practice area, Hungry Valley has extensive network of trails, again for all level of difficulty, and several overnight camp sites.
For a novice (at best) whose idea of off-roading, up till now, has been driving on Fire roads, the experience at Hungry Valley was very educating. I found Rivian extremely capable and very user friendly for off-roading. Rivian is, no doubt, an expensive car for off-roading but that's not the only thing it's good at. It's an adventure vehicle that happens to be a luxury SUV that seats 7 passengers and can do 0-60 in 3 sec. It's just a very fun vehicle all around.

No Gas Adventures, congratulations on taking your Rivian for off road type adventures. The Rivian is an adventure vehicle. What they mean "adventure vehicle" is Overland. Overland is actually a different type of off roading. The Rivian team should be happy with the performance of the vehicle and take the comparisons with the like of the GM Colorado Trail Boss and Jeeps as a compliment.
For the Content creator, when you went over the frame twister, as you had mentioned, you have to wait for the torque to be properly distributed by the Computer. The system does work very well, but for a smoother ride over that type of obstacle, when the wheels are off of the ground, you try to go really slow as the nose crests the top and you start to descend, It is best to full brake stop and just let the vehicle teeter very slow until the wheel touches the ground. Pretty good for anyway!
For Rivian, The torque system does work very well, but it seems alot of people talk about locking differentials. It does not have that, but luckily it is electric and most of that stuff is done via software. So it would be easy for the team to create another offroad mode, that could allow basically a same speed torque output. That would be the same as locking diffs. I would consider that the maybe an "extreme" rock crawling mode, but I wouldn't label it that way. That mode can be done with a fairly simple or a couple software updates.

This is cool, thanks! For other new off-roaders, I'll just mention around 3:14 the suspension articulation isn't from the differential. The comparison you're working on is between independent and solid axle suspension designs. That said, it would be best to compare with other independent suspension vehicles, so you are going apples-to-apples. I think you will find it is much more capable than most other vehicles, even many wirh solid axles.

Those hill climbs starting at 7:00 are for real. I have driven them many times in my 80 Series Land Cruiser, and I'm impressed with how the R1S did. Well done.

For a 100% stock vehicle, I think the R1S is very capable. This terrain park appears to be a great way to learn the limits and get comfortable with the SUV capabilities.

The ground clearance is 4 inches more than the Range Rover.

Come on Rivian; a lot of us are waiting for a virtual locker mode. It would be so easy to implement on the platform. Merely computer programming.

You can't simulate locker differentials will the 4 motors via software. Not physically possible. True lockers send all the power to the wheel with traction. There is no way for the quad motor to power the opposite wheel with the current hardware. However the R1S/R1T dual motor can do that. so the dual motors are actually more capable than the quad motors for rock climbing.

^ This is literally, most assuredly untrue, non-factual, false. Quad Motor provides independent drive and control on each wheel, so yes, it could provide a software locking differential; it would just send 25% to each motor. It's how they achieved the tank turn in their earlier promo video - they have such complete control over each wheel that they can even turn them in opposite directions.
And just like a locking differential, a tire in the air or on a slippery surface would just be turning pointlessly. Original Hummers had a system using the brakes to add resistance to the loose wheel, thus transferring torque to the grippy one, and in practice it would look a lot like the Rivian might. The difference is that the intent of the rivian would be to not waste charge turning a wheel that wasn't doing anything, as well as reducing the risk of damage if the spinning tire suddenly catches hold of something. But they 100% are physically capable of making full lock a feature on the Rock Crawl mode, for example.

Thank you for the support, this is at Hungry Valley SVRA which is ~60 miles north of LAX in California. I use Gaia GPS for trails and BLM campsites, but have heard good things about oNx offroad app for finding trails and off-road routes.

Which aspects are making you second guess? Lockers vs computer deciding where to send the power seems like a very different experience, but seems like the Rivian gets the job done. Just a different off-road driving experience. I guess in some situations, one might be better than the other. The solid axle vs independent sus is obviously going to be very different, too,

Not sure what your use case is, but the R1S is an awesome road tripper and off roader. I use mine for car camping for mountain bike races, absolutely love it.
