Rupert Pupkin was a desperate, sad, and tacky character. It's painful to watch this movie, yet it is excellent.

The theme of this great movie is a person's desire to "make it" in any genre, music, acting, sports can become so desperate, you really believe in a talent you never possessed.

The look on Sandra Bernhard's face when she says "Hi Jerry" ha ha ha. Slays me every time. What a pair of psycho's, with those sunglasses old folks wear over their eyeglasses, as their disguise. Pure comedy gold. One of the best films of its time. Scorsese's overlooked masterpiece.

The butler is the guy who played Uncle Benny in Lethal Weapon 4 - he really couldn't get the prop door open and Lewis really did get annoyed. Scorsese thought it was funny so he left it in the film instead of re-shooting the scene.

This movie really is an analogue to Taxi Driver. This excruciating scene with Rupert inviting his "girlfriend" to Jerry's house mirrors the scene where Travis takes Cybil Shepherd's character to the porno movie theater. Their characters are so oblivious immersed in their delusional fantasies that they cannot even form the most basic connections with people and the audience can only cringe in embarrassment and shame for them when it all comes awkwardly crashing down.
