Some people still had black and white tellies as the main set - the excuse was, often by the mother - “I can’t watch colour!”. Got no choice these days, short of turning the colour down to 0!
The BBC had long required all of its on-air staff to use only the posh RP accent. ITV wasn't as strict, but most broadcasters still spoke a certain way. By the 1980s, things had started loosening up.
