    Been wanting one of these since I was a kid. It's crazy to think 2 AA batteries run it....and the sound is incredible for the size.
    Saw one on eBay once that was brand new and UN-assembled!

      I have one just for you 😁. I have the SNST model.

    You lucky bugga. That's a dream machine. I bet it cost a fair bit too. Can't wait for the next part.

    Amazing. I kept my Sony WM-EX921 (player) for museum reasons.

    Amazing engineering. I wish Nagra had tried to make a Walkman for cassette tapes. I bet it would have rivaled Sony's WM-10 which is also a work of art. So this is a mono version? I've seen the SNST version in person before as my dad is ex-CIA.

      Good grief. You are so fortunate to have seen an SNST. Wow. Yes this is a mono version.

      @@KOVintageTech There are actually two stereo versions: The SNST and the SNST-R. The SNST was made for speech recording only, and to play back the highly compressed audio you had to use the DSM expander speaker, and even with that the sound was not too good (it was a surveillance-only model). BUt still very popular in the intelligence community... The SNST-R ("Revival") came in the 90ies, and could record in very good quality. It was a bit of a rich mans toy, costing about €9000, and very few were made. So these are very rare...

      All are great. I do have a SNST model for those interested. 😁

      @@KOVintageTech Is there a reason the wheels are green and if these weren't 1000 or more on ebay id pick one up. Reel to reel is nice but a bit hectic for me so I only do cassette usually. Someone on youtube used to have a demo of the stereo model of this not sure were it went to.

    In videoclip Delerium Feat Jael - After All (Svenson And Gielen Remix) they used Nagra SN i think

    The only thing I think I find annoying about this is that the replacement spools are made of plastic. Maybe also how far out the control button extends.

    • @KOVintageTech
      @KOVintageTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found two more metal spools. They are not cheap. And you are right. The control is a little peculiar. But it gets the job done.

      @@KOVintageTech The manual rewind is a stroke of genius. I don't think most engineers would think of it as an option and it works so great - a lot better than a motor would. I guess most engineers of the day would have grown up seeing wind up gramophones all the time so they'd be more at ease with this solution. It's probably a lot harder and much more expensive to implement such a solution on a full size reel-to-reel machine - motors and pcb's are a lot easier to make to spec by comparison.

      @@Stelios.Posantzis The control arm for the play/record, Stop or rewind made it possible to check if it was running while it was in the pocket (you wouldn't´t necessarily have the opportunity to take it out and check it in a surveillance situation).

    Don't you ever think "what if this thing was mass produced"? Just imagine how things could be if it was... I mean I always find it silly when I read statements exclaiming that Sony invented the Walkman or Apple invented the iPod etc. It's not the idea, it's the execution that counts - and moreover it's the successful execution and promotion that ultimately prevails...But back in the 70's labour was cheap and there were a dozen or more countries that could mass produce these.... Imagine every house having one.. just like a tube radio pretty much.

  • @rty1955
    @rty1955 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did they ever make one with no erase or playback head to make it smaller.
    You dont need and erase head as tapes can be bulk erased and you would never need a playback head as you would never use then at same time. Either you record OR playback, so just use one head

    • @KOVintageTech
      @KOVintageTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. The purpose of the erase head or erase magnet is to demagnetize the tape just before recording. Most of these little units use the same single tape head for record and playback. Along with an erase magnet.

    • @rty1955
      @rty1955 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KOVintageTech you dont even need a magnet either if the tape is bulk erased.
      I restore 2" quad broadcast portable video tape machines that do not have an erase stack, not full playback electronics fir weight & size

      @KOVintageTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rty1955 yes I agree. I always bulk erase my tapes anyway as it seems to do a much better job. Thanks for the great input!
