  • Today’s tackle review is covering some amazing new items in bass fishing. From rods and reels, to a variety of baits, there are a ton of new options for late Spring and early Summer bass fishing! We kick the reviews off with a look at the brand new Shimano Curado BFS casting reel, then follow it up with the Megabass P5 Baby Plugging rod. From there we jump into baits that range from a 2” tube to a 10” swimbait, with a lot of stops in between.
Since today’s gear review is in-depth we’ve included cut points to help you find your way through the baits and gear that Matt is discussing. If you’d like to jump between products you can do that very easily by using the following time stamps…

Wow. I’m surprised bfs is finally going to the us! We’ve been using bfs here in Japan for almost 10 years now.
You forgot the reason why bfs came into existence in the first place. You could cast a 2g lure with a spinning rod but at most you’re probably stuck using 3lb fc at most with those weights. But with bfs you can cast something that light with something like 6~8lbs fc which is perfect when a fish is deep in the brush, weeds etc
And you’re exactly right. Bfs used to be expensive to get into out here. A custom Shimano setup used to be about 500usd or so for like a metanium customized by ktf for example. A daiwa t3 air used to be a little more even. Maybe about 6 or 7 years ago we started getting more budget reels in bfs. Glad you guys are going to see these now.
One thing when setting a bfs for casting the cast control knob shouldn’t be doing much really. We tighten our reels down so that the spool barely moves side to side. There is very little if any pressure onto the spool shaft. All the control comes from the brake settings and good thumbing. That will allow you to get the absolute most from a bfs reel.

I have a first generation Daiwa Tatula rod. 6'11" , 3-10# line, 1/64 -1/4. This is my micro jig rod. Daiwas only rod with the same specs now is a Steez SVF AGS. This is not a panfish or ultra light rod. The action is extra fast with a solid backbone. I am surprised at how few rods like this are part of manufacturers US lineup. You can find plenty in Japan.

😲 OMG! I am soooooo going to inquire about the finesse baitcast reel! I have a RVING friend who's job it is to product test for SHIMANO. He's been doing this for over 35 years as a premium prerelease tester. Well, I'm calling him today to get some additional skinny on that reel. It's a bit more expensive than I would normally spend BUT 😅 just the thought of a dedicated baitcaster for finesse fishing tiny soft baits THRILLS ME to my core! WOW 👏 BRAVO FOR SPEAKING TO THIS TOPIC AND ESPECIALLY ABOUT THAT BAITCASTER 👏!

I purchased the Dobyns Ultra Finesse SA 700C in February ,paired it with a JDM Daiwa Alphas Air TW . I throw 1/16oz to 1/8oz hair jigs for river Smallmouth and absolutely love the combination. The Dobyns rod has an extremely thin solid tip that loads up effortlessly to bomb 1/8oz jigs. At an MSRP of $179 , the Dobyns rod is a fantastic value and I wouldn't change a thing in the design. Heck, the first fish I caught on it was a 10lb , 32 inch Northern Pike. I needed the backbone and it has it, yet makes a 1 lb smallmouth feel twice its size.

Been into BFS for about a year now and I'm loving it. My favorite setup so far is a 1/16th 2/0 finesse jig with a 2" Tiny Paca Chunk. Hauled in a nice 3lb bass on it last week. Also, for those who want to try this on a budget, Shimano has a $50 rod called the Sensilite. It makes a great entry level BFS rod.

    Great informational video.
I've been hooked on BFS lures, super light rods and reels . I use 2 or 3 inch 1/8, 1/16 oz lures with 6 -8 lb fluorocarbon almost exclusively. The only lure heavier I use is 3/8 oz spinnerbait or 1.5, 2.5 square bill. I use ultra lightweight Phenix rods ,6'9" and 7'2"with Shimano Aldeberan, lews SLP with fantastic success. While almost all the fisherman are throwing the same lures here in southern California lakes, I stay tiny. Caught 1000's fish with 7 lb biggest so far.

    Got into BFS last year.
Here is a log entry on my Best Day Ever! I rode out to a Midwest stream on my Harley, threw on waders, tramped to a stream I had fished a few time before and had fun. Note: Less than ten smallmouth bass were over 2 lbs.
9/5/2020, Labor Day Weekend, Saturday: Fish Fished 5 hours with 30 minute break. 94 smallmouth caught using St. Croix 7’ Light Action, Extra Fast Tip, 2-piece Trout Rod, Shimano Aldebaran BFS Reel, 4# White Berkley Nano-fil and 12’ of 8# Flouralcarbon Leader. Primary lure was 1/4 oz. (6 g) Panther Martin Fly Spinner Number 6 (Gold Blade, yellow wire red dots body, brown w/red hair in treble hook). Used a silver Panther Martin Fly Spinner with the same colors with good results but just like gold better. Water was 8”-3’ deep for the main holes and lure would just tick rocks. Raised rod getting more line out of the water for lure to run in skinny areas. Even caught small bass in slots in fast moving water areas. North pool was highly productive with 40+ bass caught in two hours.
Equipment setup worked crazy well again as there was no time lost in opening a spinning bail, casting and then closing the bail. I could fancast, hitting the rocks just below the surface and repeat along the shoreline. Just gave the fish multiple angles quickly. Downfall is casting distance which I estimate at 60’.
Other downfall is that the Light Action rod makes it a little difficult to set the hook if the hook is large. With bass size worm hooks, it is best to lower the rod to waist high as I set the hook, hold the rod close to the body and rotate away from the fish keeping a heavy load on the rod. This assures a deep hookset.
Be well and fun to see interest in the BFS game.

One of the top WFL pros, sponsored by Storm, said to cut the "bridge" off that goes from the tail to the paddle on the bottom of the Largo Shad. Gives the paddle tail a different action, sometimes they like it better. Also, you talked about coloring your line with a marker. Try the Milwaukee brand of markers, on your baits too. Come in black, red, and blue. At Home Depot for 99 cents. Those things will write on air, color last a long time.

You all should really try Daiwa JX8 braid, nothing beats it, even the two you mentioned don't even come close to Daiwa.

I like them a lot. They are very durable. I used the 3inch in pearl on a 1/4 to 3/8 oz head over the weekend on the TN river. My new favorite small swimbait.

This might slightly long, but.... I have fallen in love with the savage gear wedge tail, I use the same pattern you showed here in a 6" 8" and 10" for bass and pike up here in Montana, about perfectly matches silver Kokanee salmon, this is the first year I have really gotten into soft swimbaits, haven't been able to afford a Huddleston, and not sure about slinging that out in front of a 20+ lb pike, they have the tendency to shred soft baits, I have been having some difficulty with hook sets, I fish them low, dredging cause waters crystal clear and still pretty cold in the range of low to mid 50 degrees, I'm using a Curado 301e on a 8' medium heavy fast action rod (6" and 8" SG wedges) 65 lb braid, and a 80 lb mono leader (so pike don't bite them off) when I get hit, it's a solid thunk, but when I swing, nothing, I'm not sure if what I'm feeling is them dropping it vs them biting, no doubt the fish absolutely love these baits, I've been able to watch a ton of big bass chasing but haven't had the chance to watch one tag it, (clear water problems, if you can see the bass, they see you and 90% of the time won't bite) I'm comfortable throwing big baits on my set-up, and fish similar style to Matt in regards to hauling the fish up and not playing the fish, it's stick, grind hard and land, i have landed countless 6+ lb bass and 20+ lb pike on giant hard baits (like the rapala glidin raps R.I.P. 😭) and big glide baits (most lures were between 2 and 6 ounces and the setup handle them great, my 10" and bigger I have a heavier rod I use) I've watched pretty much every video you guys have made on the Huddleston and other soft swimbaits, I'm 100% new to these baits, its frustrating, in the past two days I've missed...... 15 fish.... At least, I'm fishing from the bank 99% of the time, adding to the challenge, trying to get these dialed in and build more confidence in the lures, (I'm getting hit, so I know they work the fish want to eat them) just not sure why I'm missing so many fish,(so far every fish that's hit) I've tried everything I can think of,

In addition to the Dobyn's Sierra UL, give the Phenix Recon Elite Light power rods a try. Very similar specs to the Dobyn's and both make the ML Shimano rods seem like pool cues. I like that the Phenix have a little more backbone but still a really soft tip that loads well with light baits. Been using them for several years with a handful of older Daiwa SV JDM reels that tease the BFS realm (SV105 and SV103SS) as well as a Scorpion BFS.

I've been getting in to buying JDM reels. Have a Scorpion MGL, which is basically a Curado K with an MGL spool. They also sell Scorpion BFS reels as well as SLX BFS. The SLX is only around 190 USD from the usual JDM sites like Digitaka and Japanlureshop.

Dude, I'm loving the BFS review. I used a quantum accurist pt (baitcaster)with 8lb Copolymer and a medium lightning rod throwing 1/6th oz ned rigs up on the Clark Fork in Idaho in December and slayed the trout. Caught a 6lb Rainbow and a bunch of browns and Cutthroat. Caught a nice brown on a 8th oz VMC moon eye and a perch 2.8 keitech too. So fun.
The spool on that accurist is super heavy too. Like almost 20gs I think. The newer accurate pt s3 has an 11g spool and $100. Anyway...
I'm definitely checking out that Curado BFS! AWESOME VIDEO

I recommend to use less than 1/2oz baits with Curado BFS.
In exchange for castability ,spool is vulnerable to ordinaly reels.
By Scorpion BFS (Curado BFS's Japanese variant) user from Japan.
