Twins load off side saddle (Tactical Twins)

    This is a demonstration of twin loading/load two from a side saddle, also called "tactical twins." (Note: I did not coin the term nor did I come up with this technique. Original video by Adam of Aridus Industries • How to load a shotgun ... )
    Demonstrated on Beretta 1301 Tactical with a pro style lifter, Aridus Industries QDC side saddle, the single shell caddy (by ejection port) is a RCI Xtra Shell caddy, mounted with MLOK and some velcro to prevent rotation.
    The technique isn't shotgun dependent but in this particular demonstration, a good side saddle that retains shells "brass down" reliably under recoil is recommended. Practice and refining this technique to fit you and the way your body moves is also recommended.

    That was so smooth. I love the single shell that just slides in first. How did you attach that shell holder?

    • @Evintos
      @Evintos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It is secured using a single Magpul MLOK Tnut and screw (sku - MAG615), and a little bit of velcro (hook side on handguard, loop side on the caddy) to prevent it from rotating. The bolt for the MLOK Tnut needs to be shortened otherwise it protrudes too far in and rubs against the rod of the bolt carrier.
      Without velcro, it won't shift fore/aft but it will start to rotate every 4th "swipe" and be completely loose and basically free spin by around the 10th use depending on ambient temperature. This is with the MLOK torqued to Magpul specifications for polymer handguards (15 in/lbs). Use velcro or one of the included caddy screws (limited to 1 MLOK tnut in that area of the handguard) to prevent the rotation. I recommend the velcro over another screw simply because you can fine tune the feed angle of the caddy to fit your hand motion without drilling holes.

    Was there any additional hardware necessary beyond what's included in the matchsaverz package? Not sure if the bits and pieces would install on the M-Lok slot fine and stay put.

    • @Evintos
      @Evintos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mine was a Roth Performance shell caddy but I think the only thing you'll need for the Matchsaverz brand shell caddy is a single Magpul MLOK Tnut and bolt (sku - MAG615). The bolt for the MLOK T-nut needs to be shortened otherwise it protrudes too far and rubs against the carrier rod. Matchsaverz should come with the velcro pieces but if not, you'd need that otherwise the shell caddy will rotate after about 10 swipes. A single MLOK bolt/t-nut set isn't enough to prevent rotation. It'll prevent fore/aft movement though.

    How do you pull the shells out of aridus side saddle so easy? My aridus hold she'll very tight, take a lot of effort to pull the shells out of it.

    • @Evintos
      @Evintos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are very tight when brand new and only start to become easier after about 1500 pulls. I have easily over 10k pulls on a single carrier. My "newer" ones are still pretty stiff since they're less used. The other thing that helps slightly is a little dry film lubricant on the spring steel retainer.

      It's on an Aridus Industries 1301 zhukov handguard (aftermarket) that has an MLOK slot at the rear. If you didn't have that, you can direct drill the shell caddy onto the OEM handguard.

    What light you have and how do you have it set up. I'm still on the fence how I want to do mine

    • @Evintos
      @Evintos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Streamlight HLX, Magpul M-LOK Extended Cantilever Scout Mount, Arisaka HLX to Surefire tailcap adapter, DS00 Tailcap, Unity Tactical Hot button. Excess cable is secured via trimmed zip-tie.
      The inline extended mount provides less visual clutter than a 45* offset MLOK mount.
      It creates a shadow (mostly from the barrel and magazine extension). It's not an issue (to me) since the light is bright enough that the splash/spill still illuminates the area where the shadow is cast to a more than bright enough extent to identify things in the room. Shining down a hallway, I don't even notice the shadow. There is no splash/glint of light off the muzzle/end of magazine extension that affects my sight picture. This setup allows me to position buttons on both sides at basically the same distance so I can shoot left sided or right sided. The back of the Unity Tactical Hot button can also be used as a barricade stop. The light is recessed behind the muzzle so it too, can also be used as a barricade stop provided I don't need the light. This allows the muzzle to be pushed further past the barricade (door frame, dresser, etc.) and minimizes potential shot into barricade impact/frag hazards.
      Setup is personal preference. What works for me may not work for you, so it's best to test out various setups in your own environment. YMMV depending on your light, mount, etc. Hope this helps. Pics below.

    Hey boss, I just got the aridus qd side saddle, is it just me or does this thing hold the shells extremely tight? Any way to adjust tension?

    • @Evintos
      @Evintos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know if the new ones come with a stiffer leaf spring but for mine, they became less stiff after about 1500ish or so practice loads. I also sprayed them with PTFE dry film lube. The one in the vid at the time of recording had around 10,000 loads (roughly 70% dummy and 30% live rounds) and is only around 10-15% less stiff compared to my newer carriers (but newer carriers also have a couple thousand practice loads on them).
      No tension adjustment mechanism that I know of. Aridus makes a carrier spring tool to make the spring take a deeper set but I'd say just load up some slugs (if you have aluminum 12ga dummies, that would probably work even better) into the carriers and leave it there for a month or so. Spray PTFE and then practice loading with dummy rounds. The compression and rebound of the leaf spring should break it in a bit more after the set. You can also probably break in the spring manually with a dowel or a pen.

    Have you tried to twin loading from esstac cards? Wondering if you can get the finger grip necessary or if the elastic gets in the way

    • @Evintos
      @Evintos  ปีที่แล้ว

      Short answer - yes, it's doable. I've done it with my Benelli M2 that still uses the Esstac cards.
      Long answer - A lot of people like positioning the shotshell in the dead center of the card loop but to get more finger space, you have to bias the shotshell to one side so that more of the brass side is exposed and the top edge of the loop is flush (or nearly flush) with the shotshell hull crimp. The rubber insert inside the Esstac loops will keep the shotshell in place.
      However, an issue to consider is the elastic loops eventually stretch enough (from use or if you store them loaded) so that if you were to have the shells facing brass down, they'll fall out under recoil. At that point, the cards should be replaced.

    • @macairtuber
      @macairtuber ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Evintos Good to know - thanks! Since you have experience with Esstac cards and aridus - which do you prefer?

    • @Evintos
      @Evintos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @macairtuber I prefer the Aridus. One of the reasons why I got it is because I got tired of cleaning the mud, dust, dried grass, dried leaves off the velcro.
      The negative with the Aridus is bulkier, price and weight. They're also pretty stiff to pull shells out when brand new and would benefit from a little dry film lubricant. Once you do a couple thousand practice loads though, it gets easier. Positives are rock solid retention with shells brass up or down, can keep it loaded without worry of elastic stretch/wear, easy clean by just spraying with a garden hose.

    Nobody loads a shotgun like that in a self defense situation. That's for competition gunning only.

    • @Evintos
      @Evintos  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Having skills in a tool box won't hurt. Being able to employ skills in a situation is a matter of time, opportunity and most importantly, competence.
      Competition gunning evolved pistol shooting to the modern day thumbs forward grip in isosceles stance. Otherwise pistol shooters would be shooting tea cup, or thumb-over-thumb in a weaver stance, or worse, bladed bullseye pistol stance as taught back in WW1 and WW2.
