    Abandoned & Forgotten Places
Documenting abandoned mines like never before!
Let's take abandoned mine exploring to the next level!
With your support you can help make this the best abandoned mine exploring channel on TH-cam!
Shot entirely in 4K! ...so, turn up those video settings!
On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.
Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST. (that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that subscribe button and bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!
Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT! All these things help grow our channel and your financial support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob, thanks you!
Ok, now for the ugly stuff...

“Gly”: These miners must have dusted this mine with laughing powder before they left because we had a really good time exploring this mine. I wish I could have left in all the funny moments but I do “try” to keep the show family friendly. By the way... Randy... if your reading this... those brownies you shared with us for lunch were absolutely delicious! They had just the right amount of walnuts.

Gly, I like how you pan real slow when you we get to look up or around. We don't get dizzy. I also like your constant commentary as you are walking. It is informative and most of all, it tells me how solid the rock is. If there is a good echo, then the rock is solid. If there is no echo, I start to worry if we will get out :-). You are starting to name the rock formations without saying what is in the rocks -- (gold, silver, lead, sulfur, tungsten, etc). Thank you for bringing us along on your explorations!.

If you remember, back in the early 80's, we started seeing those "generic" white or yellow food labels in our stores. You could see a white can that simply said "Beer" on it or "Bleach", no name brand on it. These were later replaced by store brand names, such as Walmart's "Great Value" or "Equate".
But back in the 80's, you bought a white can that said "coffee". Well, you were broke or pretty darn cheap. Now the labels don't look so plain so you don't have to hide it in your cart from others.

You know I want to say something about that Trojan dynamite box, and this is something I've always wondered about, you kow dynamite is made two ways, one way is with sawdust (or clay) and nitro-glycerin. The other way is with amonium nitrate (AN part of ANFO) Now, I take nitro-glycerin pills when my chest begins hurting, I carry them in my pocket all the time. and one of the side effects of using it is as soon as it starts wearing off, I get s super splitting headache.....I've always wondered if the nitro-glycerin in the pills was the same thing as the explosive.....now I KNOW! So the "No Headache" dynamite is made with AN rather than nitro-glycerin!......I think. Dang now I hace a headache, where's my pills!

I know you guys operate in the southwest, but my old hometown in Pennsylvania has a ton of abandoned buildings that are pretty cool. I miss checking them out, honestly.
My friends and I would frequent an abandoned steel mill in Kristie Park, a part of McKeesport, PA. It gave off the strangest vibes, though, likely from the leftover equipment just strewn about all over the place, as if everyone just dropped what they were doing and walked out. Honestly, that's likely the case, as that mill was part of US Steel, who abruptly shut down much of their mills in the 80's, if I recall correctly.
It also didn't help that there were two backhoes just sitting inside, one of them being infested with wasps. Either way, it's a pretty memorable place.
There are also abandoned malls and a lot of structures left untouched in the area since the local economy crashed with the departure of US Steel. There's also even an abandoned highway, which really cool to check out.
On the subject of mines, though, back when I lived in Colorado, I lived in an old silver mining town called Silver Plume. It's got the reputation of being a "Living Ghost Town," and has a bunch of abandoned mineshafts. However, most of those have been sealed off with grating to prevent folks from going down into them as they're a safety hazard along the public trails. I only managed to find one small bit that wasn't sealed off, but that's cause it was a single shaft going maybe 30' in and was completely horizontal. Plenty of bugs in it, though lol. I've often considered the idea of buying some old prospect land in Colorado, not to go looking for ores or anything, but just with the hope of finding some mineshafts to check out and maybe convert into a living space way down the line. A bit of a pipe dream, for sure, but a man can dream.

I grew up in Northern Nevada by Winnemucca. I use to explore mines to a small degree and they were old ones too. This was around 84 when I graduated HS. My brother and brother in law once lowered their little brother (me) down a vertical shaft and I explored one level and found a bunch of empty TNT boxes in excellent shape. That was nutz! I was 14 or 15..maybe younger. LOL. There were so many great mines to explore then. Lot's of the old mine equipment then also. I want to go back and explore and metal detect so bad again, but Northern Idaho if good also for I live close to Orofino..another excellent mining area.

Hi Gly, I bet riding those rails was great fun lol. Those old miners had some big cahunas going up and down those little ladders at 28:56 every day, wow crazy.
Haha I wasn't expecting a shoutout 😜 but yup darn right you're cuddly 😉, if you can't have fun then what is life xx.
Quiz time Gly, how did the ore go down that ore chute with those boards in place at 42:20 ? or were the boards added later ??.
Congrats on the new subscribers, you deserve way more, thank you for sharing and making me smile, much love to you, Mr M and Randy. xx💖

“Gly”: Hi Sue! You’ve been with the channel for a very long time and I just had to do a shoutout. Besides, cuddly is a accurate description and I got a good laugh from that. Documenting this site was allot of fun for the three of us and Mr M and I were making jokes about the brownies Randy shared. The teasing and goofing off pretty much went on all afternoon. Lol
The boards above that ore chute were being used as a means of directing the ore towards the chute but now it looks like it’s all chocked up with material that has naturally fallen down over the years. If I were to pry the gate up so that material could come down the chute it would probably make a good size pile as well as a whole lot of dust. Have a great day!

Somehow I can see Gly and Mr.M meeting Charlton Heston’s character Silas McGee from the 1982 film “Mother Lode” in one of those dark winding drifts. Nothing worse than meeting up face to face with an old Irish miner on his claim.

Your channel got a mention in today's episode (9-2-2020) from Wonderhussy Gly, she was exploring the ruins of Masonic near the Bridgeport reservoir in Ca. Five miles from the plaque on the rock were the ruins of a mill site and an adit that you may be interested in checking out; unless you already did so in the past

Someone probably already commented on this but... I was waiting for the "A Boy Named Sue" jokes to start and was slightly disappointed when they didn't lol. Awesome content though. I've been binge watching them every chance I get for the last few days since I've discovered your channel. You do an absolutely great job on taking us on the entire journey without letting it get tedious. Thanks for doing what you do and stay safe.

Ore Cart fun!! Way cool Mr M and Gly, you guys always seem to find the coolest stuff. All purpose Coffee ☕ i was totally surprised that Mr M was so spry and climbing as well as he does.. difinatly not his first rodeo.. I do appreciate his mining knowledge that he brings to the show. Randy meh.. u just don't hear so much of him at all.. the second mine seems to be crumbly so as to be dangerous hense the warning ⚠️ to stay out. I'm curious as to how you decide which mines to venture in? My first experience with your vlogs had me set off my claustrophobia and yelling at you not to go past some stopes and piles of debris! But it has been educational for me and like an E ticket at Disneyland, keep it up Gly!

Hey Gly! I came by your channel via Wonderhussy. Like others who mention it, might be cool if you two do a crossover episode sometime. Anyway I really hate how TH-cam does ads so I'll tell ya what. I'm going to drop something in your tip jar every once in a while. Keep up the good work!

My Daughter watched parts of your videos with me and she couldn't believe you were going in some of those places. She was just a little girl when I was in the mines back in 1984. She was pretty impressed.

I appreciate those who do what I haven't the nerve to do. If not for people like you no one like me would ever see the inside of a mine.

All Purpose Coffee had me recalling that you can use it, mixed with ordinary washing soda, to process black and white film and prints. The resultant mixture was known as Caffenol. It was cool stuff to use and produced some nice warm tones.
As ever, great work Gly and regards to rest of the gang.

The trolley is for carrying rail in to and out of the mine. It looks as though they were taking up the track and then just walked away and left the trolley. The rail would have been laid length ways, sleepers and fasteners could have been loaded on the trolley. Would have saved a lot of hard work carrying the stuff in and out. Similar trolleys, but much bigger were used when construction of railways took place. Surprised they left such a time saving useful piece of kit behind.

Okay, it's not a winze, it's a decline. Got it.
Actually, I keep a mining glossary up on a different tab.
    EDIT: When Gly says, " . . . Unless you have a (hand-held) magnifying glass, or a loupe, or you take a chunk . . ."
"Loupe" refers to magnification. You've probably seen your ophthalmologist,
optometrist, or dentist wear dual loupe magnifiers on their glasses, when working on you. But they can be singular, too. Now I think about it, jewelers also use singular loupe magnifiers.

you won't see much starting fluid as a liquid considering it's ether... or it was something wierd. but if that was a can of ether, you could probably start a freaking ship with that thing if you dosed it out like they do today. since it's the vapor you want, the spray is actually better, but I could see this being used because you could just pour it in and it would last a while, while you're cranking the engine over.

Often the markings made on the chutes were limited by the number counting ability of the miner. Sometimes the eldest miners had been in the mines since they were 12 years old, sometimes younger. Victorian mines could employ from 6 years old before employment laws were enforced
