Watched and followed your stuff for years now, I'm so happy for you and i love your transparency, keep it up and never change. Always rooting for you! ❤
I'm a bit old (late 40s) and lived through the end of the CD era. I just want to throw out there that, following the 80/20 rule, if 20% of those 21 million streams bought your album (I grant that a lot of those might be repeat listeners), and if you made just $1 per album sold (they used to sell for like $12 to $19 dollars back in the day), you would have made around $4.2 million dollars. I congratulate your success fully, but it doesn't obviate the fact that streaming rips off musicians.
This is the best comment I've seen from a member of the public, ever, regarding this very topic. Well done for understanding why musicians/producers feel so hard done by. I use a similar example to explain this to the public because even if you halved your figures or say only 5% of those bought the album, you'd still have made over $1 million. It all boils down to a fair wage for a fair day's work. The bottom line is that their business model wouldn't probably work in any other market because they don't actually have a business as such. If all musicians withdrew their content from that platform, they wouldn't be able to exist so they're making huge sums of money from other people's hard work. The 80/20 split should be the other way round; 80% to the producer, a small cut to the distributer! This is why more and more musicians/producers/labels are moving to direct sales via sites like Bandcamp. This method of consuming music like fast food, one price for all needs to stop. The fact is, even in a fast food restaurant where you can eat as much as you like for $10, that's the one occasion as the next time, you pay again and the money goes directly to the people who make the product.
I’m also 40+, but you have to keep in mind that what you’re proposing is (unfortunately) unfeasible nowadays, especially without a record label behind you. Taylor Swift’s best-selling album is Fearless, with over 7 million physical sales, supported by a HUGE fan base and very strong marketing. If he were selling physical albums instead of digital music, no matter the price he set, he probably would never have reached 1 million monthly listeners (or 4 million potential buyers). With every new song he releases every Friday (or every other Friday), more people discover him thanks to the algorithms, which feeds back into building his brand. How would people have discovered him in the physical format? I agree with you that the digital format kills artists, but it also allows them to be discovered. In the past, what he’s doing-releasing music independently-would have been a utopia.
nah, it doesnt work this way at all. you cant compare streams to cd sales. thats not an equivalent. you could narrow it with his listeners and geuss that maybe 20% would buy the album, which i highly doubt. It might still be way more money than what streaming makes but its still hard to compare, because without spotify andits playlists and algorithm he and a lot of musicians (me included) wouldnt have that many streams at all. Back in the days you had a lot of gatekeepers. spotify changed the game - to the better and the worse at the same time. does it payout to less? Yes of course. But does it also create new possibilites esepcially for independent artists? Absolutely!
oh and to take it further. Streaming, especially algorithmic streaming, works similar to radio. So just because one streams a song doesnt mean he would buy it, it doesnt even mean he likes the song. With all these playlists it kind of beaves like a radio play.
It’s genuinely insane what a small amount of money this is. Think about what musicians used to make for the same level of business. EDIT: After a lot of back and forth in the comments, I actually think it’s more nuanced. 10 songs to a $15 CD album = 60 cents per song (and that’s not unpacking the physical costs). That’s 60 cents per song. 200 streams = 60 cents. SO…if you’re making singles? Streaming is probably just as good as physical CDs. If you’re making albums, where someone is listening to most of the songs once or twice? Physical/digital direct sales are indeed wildly superior. So, essentially, it USED to be as if every single song on an artist’s album was listened to 100-200 times. That was the money they were making.
@@shockwavestudiosproduction4930distrokid counts up Money from all digital stores. I just Think he forgot to mention it. So the amount that he Got is from every platform. Plus Spotify is by far the most used platform when listening to Music so that might be why he just talked about that.
why not sell straight to consumer?.. You get paid 0.003 cents per play. add cost of microphones, software, time ?!?.. how does 0.003 cents make sense?... 5000 downloads for an album at $20 is $100,000. 1 million streams is $4,000??!!.. Simple math. I'll go for selling my own album digitally and aim for the 5,000 downloads at $20 per album and get the $100,000. We need to stop these major companies from telling us artist how much our work cost. 0.003 cents is beyond a slap in the face.
Streaming music is basically free nowadays. Good luck getting even 100 people to pay $20 for an album unless you’re a main stream artist. Nobody wants to pay for music consumption unfortunately

I have made few calculation based on Spotify number. In 2023 there were 1400 artists with more than 1 million streams per month. Spotify total revenue for 2023 is 14 billions USD. If Spotify pay these 1400 artists 0,01 cents USD per streams it would cost them 252 millions total assuming a total of 25 billions stream total for 2023. 252 millions is 2% of their total revenue. They could pay between 0,01 and 0,10 cents usd per streams and be very profitable.

Congratulations man. I mean it. I have received 0$ from my music since 2022.
Spotify are like vultures , the laws needs to change they pay peanuts
and 1 million records sold in the 90's the record would make $1.5 million dollars before your cut.
Do you upload songs or beats on Spotify
I got 500,000 streams in total and it only gave me 12 cents
