Bristol F2B Fighter - Evening Engine Run

- The Shuttleworth engineers have been working hard on our 1917 Bristol F2b Fighter during its winter maintenance programme, which has seen the aircraft undertake a series of engine runs. The aircraft is powered by an original Rolls Royce Falcon V12 engine - the oldest working Rolls Royce aero engine anywhere in the world.
With work taking place fine-tuning the Falcon’s carburettors, the engineers have been running the engine mostly at night to catch a glimpse of the flames coming out of the exhaust ports, and looking at the colour.
Whilst it’s important work for them, it certainly makes for quite the spectacle for the bystander!
The Shuttleworth Collection in Bedfordshire, England is home to a vast array of vintage aircraft, vehicles, as well as agricultural machinery. The Collection hosts a series of flying days from May to October each year, and is open to the public on non-flying days as well.
General admission and event tickets can be purchased at www.shuttlewor...
Many thanks for posting this, lovely to see the Hucks starter being demonstrated! Chris B.
Thank you
Watch the second version of this video. It gets into the intricacies of starting the Falcon.
How many of these Rolls Royce-Royce Falcon engines are left, I wonder. And what do they do when something on it breaks or wears out and needs replacing? I'd imagine anything it needs nowadays would have to be custom made by a skilled machinist, or is Rolls-Royce still willing to support the engine with what, at this point, must be custom, one-off fabrication.
Fun to watch. I understand that Rolls Royce is not helping the various Falcon engine users in the world. Only item to make this video better would be a short clip of the magneto switches being used, as they are located on the outside of the fuselage (port side) so the 'erk' could see them. In addition....a starting mag?
