First boot of pre-installed Solaris 7 on a brand new old stock 1998 Sun Ultra 5 workstation

  • I recently bought a BNIB Sun Ultra 5 workstation. This is a video of the initial boot from disk process to configure the pre-installed image of Solaris 7. Note that in the 14 years since the machine was manufactured (November 1998) the NVRAM backup battery has died, hence the need to manually specify the boot device. Best viewed in full HD.

    The good old Java and Solaris logos. Until Oracle came and screwed everything.

      that noise takes me right back, as does that funky font the Sun uses at boot

    I started with Solaris 2.6 and Sco Unix , ah, the memories! The phone never rang, it was just us in the datacenter, cold and humming servers.

    Thank you so much for posting a video that actually allows me to see a SunOS system booting. Using debian and reading about sun is not the same as seeing the original system from 1998. Thanks again.

    Hi, many thanks for that, I appreciate the comment. As it happens my replacement NVRAM chip arrived from HK this morning and I was able to swap out the old one. Needed to do a set-defaults to clear some weird issues, since then it has been great! Regards, Mark.

      Do they still make these or was it a NOS part?
      I thought they all were long gone, and found it easier to just hack my own to accept a normal coin cell battery...

    I've got a "special" Sun in storage. It's an Ultra AXe. Sun for a period of time made ATX motherboards that were pretty much an Ultra 5 but in ATX format and sold them to integrators. It has PS/2 ports also instead of the Sun proprietary ports. It was first supported by a late release of Solaris 7. If you install the early release, the mouse and keyboard don't work.

    • @llothar68
      @llothar68 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The later ones U25 and U45 are also ATX and used PC components (power supply)

      @UnixSysV 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The U25 and U45 don't have an ATX (or E-ATX) board and the PSU is also something else. But the Blade 1500/2500 have some ATX components.

    These new-old stock videos are funny, at least this machine was an obscenely expensive niche item when it was new.

    Hi Andras
    I haven't had any issues with Lcds. The one connected to the Ultra 5 is an AG Neovo F-419. I use this with other vintage systems like the vaxstation 4000/90 which requires sync on green. The graphics card I now have installed will drive a 1920x1080 panel!

    Nice vid, I've got two Ultra 5s in my collection. Dependable little workstations and while the I/O performance of the onboard IDE is not great its alot easier and cheaper to find hard drive replacements versus older SCSI drives. Solaris 9 runs great on these machines. Solaris 10 will run but is a bit too slow IMHO.

    Hmm, I don't remember the Ultra. 1 being as noisy as this, seem. Really miss the e250 and e450 systems I used to look after Sparc 5s were underpowered compared to the Sparc 10 and 20s I also used to set the boot options use setenv and printenv to show If you accidentally press the abort l1/stop A type go at the open boot ok prompt to resume

    How is your Ultra 5 working with LCD Monitors? I got one ultra 5 and it doesn't like them, it only works with CRTs. The problem lies in, that it takes too long for the machine to detect the monitor, and the monitor will go to sleep (tried with various monitors) and the ultra 5 will fall back to serial console.

      Sun Gallant Demi. Linux has an equivalent font here /usr/lib/kbd/consolefonts/sun12x22.psfu.gz. The Sun source code has it here: github.com/illumos/illumos-gate/blob/master/usr/src/uts/common/io/12x22.c

      @ Unix-ness is defined by compliance of standard and behaviour of OS, not just genetics. Linux is Unix, too. Some distributions have even certificate enabling them to use UNIX trademark (afaik RHEL and Huawei's Euler OS have it)

      At one time I had access to the Solaris 10 source under NDA. All the .C files had AT&T Copyrights in them. The only interesting thing I did was compile the SVR4 banner utility under Linux using GCC just to see what would happen and it actually worked. (Compiled and ran)
