    Such an interesting and engaging velo rider interview, Saukki!! You did an amazing job of asking just the right questions that brought out some great stories and comments from Alve. The pictures you inserted really help to highlight the cold, barren landscape that he rode through. I only regret that I could only give you one thumbs up😊

    One of the suggestions that indivinals have given to me. Is to look into the studded tires made by the company Schwalbe. When it comes to the snowy winter weather. Of course it's just a suggestion given to me. I'm not saying that it works. It would be something to ask the company directly. And, as usual I truly enjoy watching your videos.

    I got myself a recumbent trike (3rd year, open, no fairing). I got 2000km done this year - because with a recumbent - I can. Daily 20km - yep can do. Longer 60-90km? Yep, can do - and it is fun. I am less fat then 10 months ago - 2 to 3 more years and I might be normal weighted. Less weight means more km as well - so it gets easier with time. Everybody should take a recumbent trike or quad for a spin :o) they are simply awesome. Thanks for sharing this interview.

    • @Paul_C
      @Paul_C 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Were considering weight loss you'd be better off cycling an ordinary road bike, maybe even a heavier bike. Those recumbent bikes make it more efficient and less taxing on a body. The moment you are near to your weight then consider switching to a recumbent.

    Hats off to you Alve (or is that "hat's off"?).
    In 2016 my wife and I were at Knivskjellodden in our little 1997 VW Polo with a foldable rooftop tent from Namibia mounted on top. It had a plated steel bottom which may be a very good idea in the tropics (lightning going straight to ground through the ladder or something like that.. ).
    Anyhew, up there in the North our Dutch butts would've been freezing clean off if we hadn't stuffed the space between the roof of our Polo and the icy cold floor of our tent with tundra stuffing (shrubs, moss, elk snot, a few of those funny beaked mini-penguins called "papegaaiduikers" in Dutch and fur of rabbits, mostly). We had the ice on the inside of our tent when we woke up in the morning. Somewhat like the fantastic ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi, only slightly cheaper and mobile (more or less).
    So we made it - there and back again - and lived to tell the tale. And as both of you already knew, "there's no such thing as bad weather. Only bad cleather" ;)
    Cheers & thank you for this great vid to both of you, from Holland (orig. Flevobike prototype rider from 1990).

    What an amazing trip! I hadn't expected that a Quattrovelo or any velomobile could cope with semi-unplowed roads. Did he mention any cases of snow plows overtaking him and what's a cyclist meant to do - and what do the snowplowing trucks do?! I did see that one photo of the stopped one and the brief mentions of oncoming trucks of course.

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, he didn’t mention that. But he said that this trip wouldn’t have been possible with any three wheeler velomobiles. Quattrovelo is much more stable on slippery roads and has better traction.

    When he was talking about the e-assist for the hills, what do you think is the steepest grade of hill you can realistically go up without needing e-assist in a velomobile?

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what kind of gearing you have. Small enough gear and you can climb any hill. It just takes more time without e-assist.

    What a great insight into his endeavors, thank you. I wonder if the problem of interior freezing could be solved with some thin insulation... I guess the velomobile is never really sealed off completely so it would make little sense? Any thoughts anyone?

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as there is freezing temperature inside of the velomobile and the rider is sweating, there will be ice forming inside. If the temperature outside is -26°C, any thin insulation won’t help.

    I am making electric quattrovelo clone as university project and I have some good ideas to make velomobiles safer. Ideally it would all wheel drive with good disk brakes, powerful lights and blinkers, info screen for incoming cars, weather info, full consumption monitor and full gps system, anti lock brakes, electronic stability control, collision avoidance system with tensorflow, 360 view with multiple cameras, big battery for long distance commuting and anti theft system with gps, cellural and radio beacon. Also price estimate is about 3000 euros with all electric parts.

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good luck with that. Just a decent e-assist system with battery will cost about 1000€. The vehicle you described sounds like a modern EV. With that feature set you are looking at a price closer to 30000€.

    By the way, 2:04 in Sweden it's forbidden to use flash lights on the front. I prefere when bicyclists use steady lights as well as rear

    • @AlveHenricson
      @AlveHenricson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Regarding blinking lights on the rear of the velomobile:
      I personally don't use strong blinking light on the back when I am in the cities where there are many other vehicles. But to me it is essential to be seen on the highways where car and truck drivers are not used to see velomobiles. Had I not had a very strong blinking light on the back when driving on these highways, I would have been dead long time ago, unfortunately.
      My point is that one can not say in general what kind of light to have in the back of a velomobile. The light in the back has to be adapted to the roads that one is driving. Therefore it is important to have switches to choose the right light for right situation. Cheers

      @@AlveHenricson Jag förstår. Dock minns jag att jag var på väg hem på morgonen runt 1995 med min bil och såg ett rött blinkande ljus för första gången i mitt liv och jag trodde det var bakom en massa buskar. När jag närmade mig såg jag att det var cyklist och jag tänkte efteråt: otroligt dum belysning. Numera har jag slutat köra bil och cyklar enbart, alltid med fast belysning påslagen även dagtid.
      Här ser du dock att 0:49 Saukki använder en blinkande frontlampa på taket och i Sverige är det förbjudet.
