When feeding chicks anything other than commercial chick feed (sprouts, fodder, chicken scraps), they need chick grit. (CHICK grit is smaller, finer than chicken grit.) Chicks and chickens need grit to grind and digest anything other than commercial feed. Feeding fermented commercial feed doesn't require grit.
